  • Researchers have examined how individuals' preferred ways of comparing achievements differ according to their mindset. However, studies investigating the concomitant impact of such differences on individuals' happiness are relatively scant. Using a variety of scenarios, the present study examined how fixed-mindset and growth-mindset individuals' different achievement-comparison styles (more than others, less than others, better than before, and worse than before) affected their subjective happiness. A total of 880 participants were recruited. Fixed-mindset individuals felt happy when they felt they achieved more than others and unhappy when they felt the opposite, but were not influenced significantly when their achievement was better or worse than before. Conversely, growth-mindset individuals felt happy when their achievement was better than before but unhappy when it was the opposite, without being influenced significantly by achieving more or less than others. This study examined mindset, achievement comparison, and subjective happiness comprehensively, which, to date, have only been examined independently.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Taekwondo and calcium intake on physique, growth hormone and IGF-1 in elementary school male students. 24 subjects who the fourth grade and Taekwondo black belt ($1{\sim}2$ poom) were classified into three groups; Taekwodo +calcium intake group (8), Taekwondo group (8) and control group (8). The period of Taekwondo was 12 weeks, 5 times a week and each time 50 minutes with RPE ($7{\sim}15$) for intensity were treated and subjects were given calcium at 750 mg of pill after dinner a day during the 12 weeks. The conclusions of this study are as follows; In the comparison within each group, three groups all significantly increased in body height but in the comparison between groups, A and B groups were more significantly increased in body height than C. C significantly decreased in growth hormone and in the comparison between groups, A and B groups were more significantly increased in growth hormone than C. In the comparison within each group, A and B significantly increased in IGF-1 and in the comparison between groups, A and B groups were more significantly increased in IGF-1 than C. It is considered that Taekwondo and calcium intake give effects to body height by increasing growth hormone and IGF-1. It is necessary to continue the study, because the study results of growth hormone and IGF-1 are various by training method, intensity, nutrition.

  • Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria can affect plant growth by various direct and indirect mechanisms. This study was conducted to determine the ability of some rhizobacterial strains to enhance the seed germination of Lactuca sativa (lettuce) and Raphanus sativus (radish). Seeds were inoculated using a spore suspension ($1{\times}10^7cfumL^{-1}$) and incubated in a growth chamber at $28^{\circ}C$ under dark conditions and 65% RH. Azotobacter chroococcum and LAP mix inoculation increased the plumule length of L. sativa by 1.3, 0.8, and 0.7 cm, respectively, in comparison to the uninoculated control. Pseudomonas putida showed an increase of only 0.6 cm in plumule length when compared to the control. Inoculation of A. chroococcum, P. putida, and LAP mix enhanced the seed germination rate of R. sativus, by 10, 5, and 30%, respectively, in comparison with the uninoculated seeds. The results demonstrated that the inoculation of seeds by select rhizobacterial strains showed remarkable enhancement to the radicle length of lettuce and radish seedlings.

  • In order to verify the acceleration effect of low level laser (LLL) on oral mucosal wound healing process at cell biological level, the author studied growth pattern and ultrastructure in human gingival fibroblasts flashed by GaAlAs LLL-830 nm, 15mW for 10 minutes/flash one to three times at interval of 3-4 days through the evaluation of cell growth rate, protein conent/cell, DNA content/cell and ultrastructural changes for 14 days. The results were as follows : 1. The growth rate in gingival fibloblasts treated by LLL showed 4 orderly stages-decreasing stage after LLL treatment, acute increasing stage 3 days after LLL treatment, restring stage and recovering stage. 2. The effect of multiple flashes on LLL at interval of 3 days more or less was not proportional to times of flash on acceleration of growth in gingival fibroblasts. 3. The total protein content per gingival fibroblast was not significantly changed by LLL treatment in comparison with control group. But some kinds of protein which might be cell growth promoting factors were decreased immediately after LLL treatment, thereafter were acutely increased in cellular protein profile. 4. In ultrastructural changes of gingival fibroblasts treated by LLL, more prominent rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrial hyperplasia/hypertrophy and increased extracellular fibrillar matrix were observed in comparison with control group under same experimental period.

  • A series of pot experiments were conducted to quantitatively estimate inhibitory effects of reclaimed soil on the growth of Lentil (Lens culinaris) with two soils remediated by land farming (DDC) and low temperature thermal desorption(YJ), respectively. After cultivation in a growth chamber for 8 days, plants were harvested for the analysis of 8 indices including chlorophyll-a and carotenoid in leaves, shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, root length, number of later roots, specific root length (SRL) as well as germination rate in comparison to control experiment conducted on nursery soil. Root length was estimated by SmartRoot program from the digital images of the roots. The results showed germination rate on YJ and DDC soil decreased 29 and 71%, respectively. In comparison to the control, the averaged value of the 8 indices for YJ and DDC soil showed overall growth inhibition was 48 and 68%, respectively. When the same experiment was conducted with 25% (W/W) vermiculate amended soil, plant growth on each soil was comparable to that of the control. The results implies reclaimed soils requires additional processes and/or amendments to reuse for plant growth.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between weak children and growth indices. Methods One hundred twenty-six of the first and the second grade elementary school students who didn't have to develop yet their secondary sexual characteristics answered the questionnaire. Their bone age and body composition were measured. Results 1. According to the Weak Children questionnaire analysis, respiratory problem was one of the biggest problems in the weak children group (35.7%), followed by digestive problems (23.0%), psycho-neurological problems (22.2%), neuromotor problems (9.5%), and urogenital problems (8.7%). 2. From the comparison between growth indices of weak children and that of normal children are as follows: 1) The group of children who had problem in their digestive system had lower growth indices than the normal average children group. The growth indices includes mean height, weight, total body water, protein mass, mineral mass, body fat, skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), and basal metabolic rate (BMR). 2) The children who had urogenital weakness had lower mean height, RH (Recent Height), RH - MPH {Recent Height(%) - Mid-Parental Height(%)}, RUS (Radius, Ulna and Short bone) score, weight, protein mass, body fat, BMI, and visceral fat than the normal children group. 3. The results of the multiple comparisons of growth indices and weak children groups are as follows: 1) Digestive weak children were the lowest in total body water, protein mass, mineral mass, skeletal muscle mass, and basal metabolic rate. 2) Urogenital weak children were the lowest in height, RH, RH - MPH, RUS score, and weight. Conclusion These results showed that children's growth is strongly correlated to their own growth problems, especially to those children who have digestive and urogenital problems. Therefore, this may be an effective way for children growth treatment in Korean medicine to treat weak symptoms.
