Effect of Brazilin from Caesalpinia sappan L. on the Growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 (소목으로부터 분리된 Brazilin이 Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175의 생장에 미치는 효과)

  • Somok, the heart wood of Caesalpinia sappan is used in traditional Chinese medicine. This study was performed to investigate the effect of growth and culture conditions of brazilin from C. sappan against S. mutans ATCC 25175. The bacteria were cultured in brain heart infusion (BHI) broth, and then incubated under 5% $CO_2$ at $37^{\circ}C$ for 18-24 hours. The effect of brazilin against S. mutans was confirmed under the changes of the culture conditions, such as growth curve and the change of pH, protein, and total carbohydrate. The growth of S. mutans in control medium was the highest at 24 hr, while brazilin-added medium (0.3 mg/ml) showed maximum growth at 32 hr. The pH values of the control medium was 5.25 at 16 hr, but the media supplemented with brazilin (0.3 mg/ml) was 7.0 at 16 hr. The amounts of total carbohydrate of the control medium was 11 mg/ml at 8 hr, but the brazilin-added media (0.3 mg/ml) was 18 mg/ml at 8 hr. In the protein change of the culture medium, the control culture broth and the brazilin supplemented-cultures was 2.4 mg/ml and 2.54 mg/ml at 24 hr, respectively. Polysaccharide contents of the control medium and test media were 3 mg/ml and 2 mg/ml at 8 hr, respectively. Thus, the application of C. sappan can be considered a useful and practical material for the prevention of dental caries.

  • This paper reports doping of carbon atoms in GaN layer, which based on dimethylhydrazine (DMHy) and growth temperature. It is well known that dislocations can act as non-radiative recombination center in light emitting diode (LED). Recently, many researchers have tried to reduce the dislocation density by using various techniques such as lateral epitaxial overgrowth (LEO) [1] and patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) [2], and etc. However, LEO and PSS techniques require additional complicated steps to make masks or patterns on the substrate. Some reports also showed insertion of carbon doped layer may have good effect on crystal quality of GaN layer [3]. Here we report the growth of GaN epitaxial layer by inserting carbon doped GaN layer into GaN epitaxial layer. GaN:C layer growth was performed in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor, and DMHy was used as a carbon doping source. We elucidated the role of DMHy in various GaN:C growth temperature. When growth temperature of GaN decreases, the concentration of carbon increases. Hence, we also checked the carbon concentration with DMHy depending on growth temperature. Carbon concentration of conventional GaN is $1.15{\times}1016$. Carbon concentration can be achieved up to $4.68{\times}1,018$. GaN epilayer quality measured by XRD rocking curve get better with GaN:C layer insertion. FWHM of (002) was decreased from 245 arcsec to 234 arcsec and FWHM of (102) decreased from 338 arcsec to 302 arcsec. By comparing the quality of GaN:C layer inserted GaN with conventional GaN, we confirmed that GaN:C interlayer can block dislocations.

  • It has been well known that the fracture mechanics can be applied to large through crack growth. But the growth rate of small surface cracks initiated from a small defect under rotary bending fatigue tests can not be treated as a function of stress intensity factor range. In this paper, to investigate the growth behavior of surface small fatigue cracks in the view-point of both fracture mechanics and strength of materials, the fatigue test has been carried out on two kinds of plain carbon steels with a small surface defect. Applying the concept of the cyclic strain intensity factor range .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$/$_{t}$ to the analysis of small surface fatigue crack growth, it is found that the relationship between cyclic strain intensity factor range and crack growth rate shows linear relation on logarithmic coordinates regardless of defect sizes and two kinds of carbon steels.s.s.

  • Samples of Meretrix lusoria were collected monthly from the tidal flat of Simpo, Puan-gun, Chollabuk-do, west coast of Korea from April 2004 to March 2005. Age of M. lusoria was determined from the rings on the shell. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variations in the marginal index (MI') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of February to April. The relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: SH = 0.8103 SL + 0.5145 $(r^2=0.991)$. The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation: SW = 0.4897 SL + 0.0315 $(r^2=0.976)$. Shell length (SL; mm) and total weight (TW; g) was expressed by the following equation: $TW=2.9195\times10^{-4}\;SL^{2.9547}\;(R^2=0.991)$. Shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: $SH=0.8103\;SL+0.5145\;(R^2=0.991)$ The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation: $SW=0.4897\;SL+0.0315\;(R^2=0.976)$.   • Samples of Potamocorbula ustulata ustulata were collected monthly from October 2004 to November 2005 in the Jujin estuary of Gochang, Chollabuk-do, west coast of Korean peninsula. Age of P. ustulata ustulata was determined by the rings on the shell. The relationship between the shell length and the ring diameter in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index (MI') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during October to December. The relationship between the shell length (SL) and the shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: SH = 0.6438 SL + 0.5642 ($r^2\;=\;0.978$). The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation: SW = 0.4352 SL - 0.5675 ($r^2\;=\;0.957$). Shell length (SL; mm) and the total weight (TW; g) followed: $TW\;=\;6.999\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;SL^{3.2542}(r^2\;=\;0.975)$. Growth curves for the shell length and the total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's growth curve were expressed respectively as: $$SL_t=30.77[1-e^{-0.4572(t+0.7371)}],\;TW_t=4.87[1-e^{-0.4572(t+0.7371)}]^{3.2542}.$$

Antimicrobial Effect of Portulaca oleracea Extracts on Food-Borne Pathogens

  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of Portulaca oleracea extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, the Portulaca oleracea was extracted with methanol at room temperature, and then further fractionated by using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Portulaca oleracea extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The ethyl acetate extracts of Portulaca oleracea showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. There was also a synergistic effect of the combined extracts of Portulaca oleracea and Indigofera kirilowii as compared to each extract alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve of ethyl acetate extracts of Portulaca oleracea against Staph­ylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae was determined The ethyl acetate extract of Portulaca oleracea showed strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of ethyl acetate extract from Portulaca oleracea, retarded the growth of S. aureus by more than 24 hand Shigella dysenteriae up to 12 h at $37^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of Sophora angustifolia extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, Sophora angustifolia was extracted with methanol at room temperature, and the methanol extracts from Sophora angustifolia were fractionated using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The antimicrobial activity of the Sophora angustifolia extracts was determined using the paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The methanol extracts of Sophora angustifolia showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium. A synergistic effect was found in the combined extracts of Sophora angustifolia and Portulaca oleracea, compared to the activity of each extract alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve was determined using the methanol extracts of Sophora angustifolia against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium. The methanol extract of Sophora angustifolia showed strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 5,000 ppm. The 5,000 ppm methanol extract from Sophora angustifolia retarded the growth of S. aureus for more than 24 hours and of Salmonella typhimurium for up to 12 hours.

Geographic Variation in Survival Rate and Height Growth of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. in Korea

  • This study was conducted to examine the geographic variation among provenances of Pinus densiflora in survival rate and height growth at four test plantations (Jungsun, Chungju, Naju, and Jeju). The plantations were parts of the eleven provenance trials of Pinus densiflora established by Korea Forest Research Institute in 1996. The survival rate and height growth were significantly different among test plantations at $p{\leq}0.01$. Latitude and longitude of test plantation were negatively correlated with survival rate and height growth. On the other hand, annual mean temperature, mean temperature (Nov.~Feb.), extremely low temperature (Dec.~Feb.), and annual mean growing days of test plantation were positively correlated with these two. The relationships between growth variables and geographic variables were analysed with canonical correlation analysis. A considerable amount of variation in survival rate and height growth was explained by latitude, annual mean growing days, extremely low temperature (Dec.~Feb.) and extremely high temperature (Nov.~Feb.) of provenances. It is estimated that up to 47.1% and 67.4% of the genetic variability in survival rate and height growth was attributable to the environmental variability of the provenances, respectively. The response surface curve of survival rate and height growth was plotted against latitude and longitude to examine growth performance of provenances for each test site. Generally, the local provenances showed better survival rate and height growth.

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship education is becoming an important development opportunity for colleges and universities to realize curve overtaking. Affected by the physical and mental development characteristics, female college students in innovative undertaking showed different growth characteristics. In order to further promote female college students' innovative undertaking, we should combine the characteristics of female design with innovation entrepreneurship education path. As one of the three women's colleges, the general innovation and entrepreneurship course system of Shandong Women's University provides a wide education of innovation and entrepreneurship consciousness and thinking for all students. The undergraduate major of business Administration (entrepreneurial management) provides the whole system education of entrepreneurship, and through "system guarantee, professional construction, course system, competition assistance and project cultivation", female students' entrepreneurial consciousness is cultivated and their entrepreneurial ability is improved.
