Objectives: The purpose was to test the effect of an empowerment health management program on self-esteem and the quality of life for the elderly who live in cities. Methods: Forty-three elders were randomly assigned to either the experimental group that received the intervention to participate in one year's empowerment practice (one home visiting per week and phone counselling) (n=21) or to the control group that got home visiting only (n=22). The data was analyzed using ANCOVA. Results: There was no significant difference in the self-esteem score between the two groups after the intervention. But the quality of life score of the experimental group was significantly different from that of the control group after the intervention. Conclusions: The health management intervention using empowerment for the elderly living alone with chronic diseases in urban areas had positive effects on the quality of life. Therefore this intervention can be broadly applied to other elders living alone with chronic diseases in urban areas.
Purpose: This study was to compare the effects of individual and group intervention programs on the demented elderly and their families. Methods: The programs were applied to two groups, one by home visiting and the other by group intervention. The groups were composed of 14 elders and 12 elders, respectively, with their families. The programs were applied twice a week, ninety minutes per session for four weeks. Programs consisted of cognitive therapy, music and art therapy, and massage for the demented elderly, education on dementia, cognitive-behavioral intervention for problematic behavior, methods to lessen stress, and counselling for the families. Results: AER, problematic behavior, QOL of pts and QOL, caregiving burden, and relationship with the pts of caregivers were improved after each program but not significantly except QOL of pts (Z=-3.37, p=.00) in the group intervention. When the two interventions were compared with each other, the group intervention program was more effective than the home visiting program in all variables but not significantly except QOL of pts (U=32.00, p=.00). Conclusion: In summary, both the individual and group intervention programs were helpful to both pts and families, and even though there was no statistically significant difference between the two intervention programs except in QOL of pts, the group intervention was more effective.
The purpose of this study was to examine the economic status of retired elderly households. This study especially looked for the differences in the economic status among retired elderly households and the level of subjective financial strain. The data were drawn from the data of 2000 Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) conducted by the Korea Labor Institute. The major findings are as follows: 1) The levels of income in the retired households were found to be lower than those of the employed elderly households, and the transfer income took the biggest portion out of 5 income types reflecting high economic dependency. 2) The levels of expenditure were found to be similar to the minimum living cost, and the food cost at home was 41.9% of the expenditure. 3) About 40% and 27.3% of households reported that they felt financial strain due to food expenditures at home and health care respectively. 4) Ninety percent of all assets were found to be real estate, reflecting the lack of asset liquidity. Further, retired elderly households were classified as 'not at all strained financially', 'moderate', 'seriously strained', and 'extremely strained' groups according to their subjective assessment. The last two groups showed the lower level of income and expenditures than the first two groups. In particular, 26.5% of retired elderly households belonged to 'extremely strained' group and showed very serious economic problems.
The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of a life review-narrative group therapy program aimed at increasing ego-integrity in the elderly. The life review-narrative group therapy program was organized according to the tfe course from childhood to old age. The objectives of the program were for the elderly to enhance their self-worth, become aware of their individual self existence, accept aging and death, accept the past and present life, and to make the most of their experiences of overcoming difficulties. The counseling techniques used in the program were mainly reminiscence and re-authoring of the narrative therapy. Thirty-two elderly people aged 60 years and over (16 in each of experimental and control groups) were selected randomly from the Daegu Metropolitan City General Welfare Center for the research. The two groups were identified as equivalent for the study in a pre-test. The program of the experimental group was implemented twice a week for 90 minutes per session over a 6-week period (Sep. 8th - Oct. 14th. 2005). The pre (Sep. 8th 2005), the post (Oct. 14th. 2005) and follow-up (Nov. 14th. 2005) tests were implemented in ordo, to verify the effectiveness of the program. The instruments used in the study were the Ego-Integrity Scale. The data were analyzed using t-test, and Ore-Factor Repeated Measures ANOVA. The findings of the study were as follows. The experimental group evidenced significant effects on enhancing ego-integrity. The result of the post hoc multiple comparisons showed that the effects of the life review-narrative group therapy Program were maintained for one months. Meanwhile the control group did not show any significant change in ego-integrity. Based on these findings, the limitations of the study were discussed, and further research was suggested.
This study aimed to estimate the effect of the home based food supplying program in single living female elderly on the basis of depression, Health and Nutrition Risk Index, dietary attitude and dish consumption frequencies. The Food Supplying Program was carried out for 8 months for 27 single living female elderly from lower income status in Bucheon city. Main supplied foods were consisted with soymilk, vegetables, fruits and fish. The effect of the food supplying program were analyzed for 22 elderly who completed the program (group supplied with food : GSF) compared to the group not supplied with food (GNSF). The results of this study were as follows: Degree of depression estimated with depression score and Health-Nutrition Risk Index were decreased and the scores of dietary attitude and behaviors were increased for GSF after 8 months. However these improvements were not shown in the GNSF. GSF showed significantly increased consumption frequencies in soybean milk, tangerine, stir fried anchovy and yogurt, where as GNSF was observed with the decreasing trend in most of the dishes. In conclusion, home based food supplying program for single living female elderly not only increased the consumption frequencies of some dishes but also improved depression rate, Health and Nutrition Risk Index and dietary behavior concomitantly.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the ICPP on cognitive function, level of depression, and quality of life of older adults. Methods: This study follows a pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group, quasi-experimental design. The subjects of this study were elderly people aged 65 years or older registered at comprehensive social welfare centers. A total of 42 participants took part: 21 in the control group and 21 in the experimental group. Data collection was conducted between September 18, 2017 and November 2, 2017. The ICPP was conducted for the experimental group for 6 weeks as a group program (3-4 times a week, for a total of 20 sessions). The control group underwent a simple exercise program for 6 weeks (once a week, for a total of 6 sessions). Results: The experimental group showed significant improvement in their cognitive function, level of depression, and quality of life. Conclusion: These results suggest that the ICPP helps improve cognitive function, alleviates depression, and increases quality of life, and is expected to be an effective nursing intervention for older adults.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group combined intervention that combined animal-assisted therapy and integrated elderly play therapy on the depression, self-esteem, and emotional expression of geriatric patients residing in nursing homes. This was achieved by providing cognitive, physical, and emotional activities and social interaction at the same time. The group combined intervention method was applied to twelve elderly patients (six in the control group, six in the experimental group) aged 65 or older who live in a nursing home for the elderly in C province, from May 3, 2019 to June 21, 2019, for a total of 8 times (once a week, 50 minutes at a time). The quantitative evaluation was analyzed through SPSS 21.0 for comparison before and after the program was implemented, using the Korean version of the depression and the self-esteem scale. The qualitative evaluation compared emotional expression pre-test and post-test. The major results of the study were as follows: First, the group combined intervention was effective in reducing depression levels of the experimental group among the elderly patients. Second, it was effective in improving the self-esteem of the experimental group among the elderly patients. Third, it showed a significant difference in the emotional expression of the experimental group among the elderly patients. Therefore, it was found that group combined intervention reduces depression and improves self-esteem and emotional expression of the elderly. Based on these results, it is hoped that this study will be a cornerstone in the development of concrete programs for the benefit of elderly patients living in facilities.
This study compared the financial status between the employed-elderly households and the unemployed-elderly households, focused on income adequacy, expenditure adequacy and net wealth adequacy. Using data from 1997 KHPS, the lower financial status of the unemployed elderly households were found. Nine measures of financial status were used : income, per capita income, income-to-needs ratio, expenditure, per capita expenditure, expenditure-to-needs ratio, net wealth, net wealth-to-income ratio and net wealth- to-expenditure ratio. The results of this study showed that unemployed elderly households had 68%~77% of income adequacy and 72%~83% of expenditure adequacy for employed elderly households. Holding for gender, age, education, earners in the household, living area and home ownership constant, although the gap was getting smaller, significant differences between the unemployed-elderly households and the employed-elderly households were persisted. The result of this study indicated that the unemployed-elderly households and the employed-elderly households can not be regarded ac homogeneous group when public policies are developed.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relative influence of various characteristics that affect the happiness and family strength of pre-elderly and the elderly. This study also shows the differences between the two age groups. The National Survey of Korean Families has been done by the Ministry of Equality and Family on 2010. Respondents selected from national survey were 1016 pre-elderly and 629 elderly. The results of this study are as follows; first, 66% of the respondents chose health as the condition is being the important elements of their happiness following money, work (job), children, spouse and family life. Second, the group of people considering work and health as important elements of their happiness is happiest, but the group considering money and health as the important elements of their happiness feels a lower level of happiness. Third, the pre-elderly chose health as the most important condition, but the elderly chose subjective economic condition, among the factors affecting family strength. Fourth, family strength affects most on in regard to the happiness of pre-elderly and the elderly. Next, the more they are financially stable, physically healthier and living in rural areas, they feel the happier they feel. Based on the results of this study, further studies are needed to determine components of family strength that both pre-elderly and the elderly consider as important elements of their happiness. Support programs for the elderly without a spouse will increase the well-being of the elderly.
This thesis is to inquire into the effect of group art therapy by way of reminiscence on the depression of the elderly inpatients with geriatric illness. The subjects are 20 inpatients whose age is over sixty in the Elderly Nursing Hospital located in K county. Among them, 10 inpatients are arranged as the experimental group, and the rest 10 inpatients, as control group. The research period is from February 28, 2009 to August 21, 2009. For the experimental group, the group art therapy by way of reminiscence is carried out during 21 sessions once a week for 60 minutes per session. For both the experimental group and the control group, pre and post test is carried out, and then after four weeks, the further test is carried out. The measurement tools are KGDS(Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale) and KHTP. The data are analyzed by SPSS(for Windows) and SAS(ver. 9.1.2), by which one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, and Scheffe test are carried out. The results are as follows. First, the average of the whole elderly depression levels is shown significantly in the post test and the further test between the two groups. The art therapy group is more effective on the reduction of depression of the elderly inpatients with geriatric illness than control group. Second, it is shown that there is significant difference between the two groups in the the elderly depression by KHTP. The art therapy group is more effective in the improvement of the reduction of the elderly depression in view of KHTP. In conclusion, the group art therapy is an efficient intervention which enables to reduce the depression of the elderly inpatients with geriatric illness.
