The purpose of this study was to analyze a change in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) level and the continuity of the effects in music therapy by applying short-term music therapy program in fire fighters with Post-traumatic Stress (PTS). Forty two fire fighters in 3 districts were randomly assigned to experimental group (21 subjects) and control group (21 subjects). Music therapy was applied in totally 10 sessions by two sessions (120 minutes) a day for 5 days. PTS level was measured immediately after the end of program, after 4 weeks, and after 12 weeks. As a result, PTS level has significantly decreased into $8.90{\pm}4.55$ from $26.52{\pm}2.32$ right after the music therapy program(p<0.05). And the effect was shown to be continued significantly up to after 4 weeks($11.95{\pm}4.57$) and after 12 weeks($13.76{\pm}5.62$)(p<0.05). As a result of research, it is considered that the music therapy is effective approach for reduction in PTS as for fire fighters who belong to the group with high risk of PTSD. Accordingly, the application of regular program for managing fire fighters' mental health is understood to likely to contribute to enhancing the field service competence.

This study was examined the effect and the continuity of music therapy for reduce on post-traumatic stress (PTS) in 119 emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The subjects of the study were 42 EMTs in the C area, and the study was conducted from November 25, 2019 to March 1, 2020. The experimental group conducted a total of ten music therapy programs twice a day for five days. The session-specific program was conducted by two music therapists, including the early, mid, late, and closed stages. Each step applied intervention techniques necessary for goals such as improvisation, rhythm making, Nanta, and couple physical activities. The control group was required to take a free break (TV viewing, cell phone games, sleep, exercise, etc.) at the same time as the experimental group's program. The study found that the control group had no difference in PTS before and after the application of music therapy, but the experimental group had a significant decrease in PTS immediately after the application of music therapy and a gradual increase in PTS after 4 and 12 weeks (p<.05). Repetitive music therapy is judged to be an effective way to mitigate the PTS leve for EMTs.
This study was to investigate the effects of percussion program on depression and self-esteem for the elderly lived in residential care. 12 older adults participated in the 40-min. percussion program for 4 weeks(10 sessions). The percussion program consisted of three steps; 1) introduction for creating rapport and relationship, 2) process for mood induction and increasing interaction, and ending for increasing self-achievement and confirming the changed mood. Korean Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS) and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) were administered before the first session and after the completion of the program. Results showed statistical significance (p<.05) in KGDS (p=.020) and SES (p=.025). Findings imply that percussion program can induce positive changes in depression and self-esteem for elderly in the residential care, and more depressed elderly group may have better outcome in percussion playing. Future studies should consider various levels of depression among elderly, and design the program to be more sensitive to the level of functioning.
This study of a music therapy program for the 18 subjects residing in Jeollanam-do province was conducted two times per week during 4 months totalling 17 times in order to evaluate the reduction of the characteristics of patients suffering from stress disorder patients such as depression, and anxiety, Though the experiment for non-symmetric level the concentration and appearance of Alpha wave were determine to be stable but the findings from non-symmetric level according to the left-right brain activity were not significant for T-test, though its effective intermission of music therapy due to variation of the mean values was demonstrated, and the variation of the Alpha wave appearance rate was also significant for the statistics of the T-test for the effectiveness of the music therapy. And for the reduction of depression, emotion, and state-trait anxiety between groups divided into the control group and the experiment, pre-measurement and post-measurement comparisons through psychological tess, validated the effectiveness of music therapy for Posttraumatic stress disorder patients. First of all, this study was conducted in the situation of scarce study cases and program developments for the efficacy of music therapy for the patients suffering from Posttraumatic stress disorders without precedent studies of scientific identification through brain wave measurement. Because this study is insightful in the context of validating the efficacy of musical treatment, we expect that these kinds of studises will be continued.
The purpose of this study was to investigate if a positive psychological-based music therapy program for gambling addicts' families, causes explicit or implicit attitude change towards gambling addicts. The study focused on families with gambling addicts, who use counseling centers for gambling addiction, or participate in GAM-ANON (GA). The experimental group (n=11) participated in 8 sessions of a positive psychology-based group music therapy program, and the control group (n=8) participated in 8 sessions of personal counseling, or GA family gatherings. To confirm treatment effectiveness, the attitude towards the family relationship, was measured by the explicit (Family Relation Scale) and Implicit Association Task (IAT) methods. Additionally, change in emotions including and anger (PANAS, HBDIS), was measured. Results of the study showed that positive emotions increased significantly, in the positive psychotherapy-based music therapy group compared, to the control group. However, in the treatment group with implicit attitudes, the rate of association of negative words with families accelerated significantly, suggesting that gambling addicts' families may have higher negative emotions. For the future, we discussed the necessity of providing a treatment program, that can directly lead to changes in attitudes of family members of gambling addicts.
The purpose of this study is to discover how therapeutic music making affects the way of communications in single-parent families. To do this, the study conducted a therapeutic music making program in two families consisting of a mother and a child. Songwriting, Ostinato-creating, improvisation imitation, and ensemble were used as musical interventions. The results of this study are following. First, the participant group B improved from 59 to 69.5 point after the program. However, the group A decreased from 81 to 75.5 point mainly due to frequent absences, differences in applying music. Second, the analysis of the results of verbal, nonverbal and musical responses from the program suggests that the group B gradually improved functional communications as each session develops. For the case of group A, at the initial stage, dysfunctional communications in verbal and nonverbal ones could be found. After the eighth session however, functional communications had increased. The result of the study shows that overall therapeutic music making has been an effective musical intervention in improving communication in single-parent families.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effects on the heart rate and respiration rate of preterm infants when providing auditory stimulation on them. Methods: The design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design in a quasi experimental study. Forty preterm infants were assigned to experimental and control groups : 20 in the auditory and 20 in the control group. The data were collected from May 2014 to October. The auditory stimulation was created by using an audio music tape provided 20-minute per day for 7 consecutive days. In data analysis, SPSS WIN 21.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, repeated measurement anova and Mann-Whitney. Results: General characteristics of the two groups showed no significant differences, thus two groups were found to be homogenous. There were no significant differences in heart rate and respiration rate between the auditory and control groups. Conclusion: The effect of auditory stimulation for 7 days was not effective in decreasing heart rate or respiration rate in premature infants. Therefore, the type and length of music therapy must be developed for the improvement of vital signs in preterm infants who were hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit.
This qualitative study investigated how a music therapy program was experienced by juvenile offenders of school violence who were under a conditional suspension of indictment. Six adolescents participated in 12 consecutive weeks of group music therapy sessions, and were interviewed individually based on open-ended questions addressing key constructs of self-determination theory, which are autonomy, competence and relatedness. Using this framework, data was deductively analyzed using a modified grounded theory. The analysis also investigated how such impact of music therapy transferred or expanded to their everyday life. The analysis revealed that the properties of autonomy included making choices of songs and instruments, deciding how to play, and expressing opinions about music. Competence was associated with developing skills on musical instruments, creating own music, concentrating on their own project, and demonstrating their abilities. Relatedness were related to collaborating, exchanging opinions, and playing a part in musical projects. In addition, it was found that they also experienced shifts in consciousness and behavior, expanded self-awareness, and mutual exchange and group support. Lastly, it was revealed that the positive emotional and behavioral changes they experienced in music also appeared in their school life.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of music intervention on the patient's fear and anxiety during scaling. Methods: 360 patients who had visited W University dental hygiene laboratory were selected as study subjects and divided into experiment group and control group. Results: Study results showed that the control group (71.9%) and the experimental group (75.1%) had experiences avoiding dental treatment due to fear. In the control group (37.6%) and experimental group (40.6%), the highest influencing factor was the sound of machine and followed by pain. The experimental group preferred classical music, followed by pop songs, trot music and instrumental music. In the experimental group (83.3%), fear and anxiety were alleviated by music, and 77.9% of the patients mentioned they would recommend music for scaling to other patients. There was an interaction effect (p=0.014) between the groups before and after the measurement of the lowest blood pressure. There was a significant difference in pulse before and after pulse measurement (p=0.000). There was a significant difference in respiration between groups (p=0.042) and before and after respiration (p=0.030). Conclusions: Study results showed that music intervention that utilizes music during scaling showed significant effects on the alleviation of fear and anxiety, affecting Pulse number among vital signs. Therefore, more systematic program is to be required to alleviate dental fear and anxiety with music therapy not only for scaling, but also for dental clinic in the future.
