This paper deals with investigation on the spot for grounding systems of buildings based on international standards at construction sites. The investigation was carried out for grounding method, grounding type, shape of grounding electrode, grounding for a lightning protection system, continuity of steelwork in reinforced concrete structures, etc. The investigation on the spot was performed by a researcher and engineer with over fifteen years of industry experience all over the country. As a result of the investigation on the spot in 13 buildings, common grounding and structure grounding methods were dominant. The safety improvement methods include installation of equipotential bonding conductors for the connection to the main earthing terminal, equipotential bonding conductors for supplementary bonding, use of Surge Protective Devices (SPD), and safe connections between earthing conductors and the rebar.

This paper presents the transient and conventional grounding impedance behaviors of large grid grounding system associated with the injection point of impulse current The measurement methods consider two possible errors in the grounding-system impedances: (1) ground mutual resistance due to current flow through ground from the ground electrode to be measured to the current auxiliary, (2) ac mutual coupling between the current test lead and the potential test lead The test circuit was set to reduce the error factors. The transient grounding impedance depends on the rise time and injection point of impulse current It is effective that grounding conductor is connected to the center of the large grid grounding system.
This paper presents the characteristics and effects of grounding resistor and impedance. In grounding system, Grounding resistor is governed neutral currents and voltage. It seems that, grounding resistor has 0 value, then circuit has no faults. While if grounding resistor has large value, then neutral current has large value of fault current and it is made a damage to the utility. In order to analyze the grounding impedance characteristic, EMTP simulation has been used. The grounding impedance characteristic has been analyzed and tested for various grounding arrangements and electrode circuit shapes.

In this paper, the effects of the positions of the potential and current probes on the measurements of the ground resistance and potential gradients with the fall-of-potential method are described and the testing techniques to minimize the measuring errors are proposed. The fall-of-potential method is theoretically based on the potential and current measuring principle and the measuring error is primarily caused by the position and ground resistance of the measuring probes. The ground resistance is calculated by applying the 61.8% and rule in the fall-of-potential method, and then the potential probe is located on the straight line between the grounding electrode to be measured and the current probe. However, sometimes the grounding electrode to be measured and the measuring probes in on-site test might not be arranged on the straight line with adequate distance because there are building, road block, construction and other establishments. Provided that the grounding electrode to be measured and the measuring probes ar out of position on the straight line or have inadequate distance, the measurement of the ground resistance classically falls into an error and the measured ground resistance should be corrected. Measurements were focused on the grounding electrode system made by the ground rods of 2.4m long. It was found that the suitable separation between the grounding electrode to be measured and the current probe is more than 5 times of the length of the grounding electrode to be measured.

For accuracy of an experiment, measure changing of grounding resistance by short period after construction and investigated the efficiency of grounding's different methode of parallel connection. We could confirm on measurement's accuracy, error through comparing the theoretical value and measured value. Therefore, reduction ratio can be expected from execution measurement to receive a target resistance value. By the result, we could evaluate the method of rod grounding electrode's proper execution

For lightning currents, a grounding system shows the transient grounding impedance characteristics. A grounding system for protection against lightning should be evaluated by the transient grounding impedance, not it's ground resistance. The transient grounding impedance varies with the shape of ground electrode and earth characteristics as well as the waveform of lightning surge current. For the analysis and practical use of transient grounding impedance, the characteristics of transient grounding impedance should be analyzed theoretically and this paper suggests the theoretical analysis for the transient grounding impedance of counterpoise by using the distributed parameter circuit model. EMTP and Matlab are used to simulate the distributed parameter circuit model of counterpoise and the adequacy of the distributed parameter model of counterpoise is examined by comparing the simulated results with the measured results.
We are explaining shapes factor of ground electrode in a rectangular parallelepiped which is based on analysis of a hemisphere electrode. Actually, a hemisphere electrode is hardly used in a plan and construction, because it is difficult for somebody to use one. This thesis describes the method of grounding resistance estimation which is used the water tank model and electrode shopes factor.

This paper presents transient response behavior and frequency-dependent ground impedance of a single carbon ground electrode. The ground impedance of the carbon ground electrode was measured as a function of frequency of injected currents and simulated by using the distributed parameter circuit model with due regard to the frequency-dependent soil parameters, and the transient response behavior of the carbon ground electrode against impulse currents were investigated. As a consequence, the frequency-dependent ground impedance of the carbon ground electrode showed the capacitive behavior, that is, the ground impedance decreases with increasing the frequency of injected currents and lowers at the fast front time of impulse current. It was found that the carbon ground electrode is effective in grounding system for lightning protection. The ground impedance simulated with due regard to the frequency-dependent soil parameters was in good agreement with the measured data. The adequacy of the simulation technique and the distributed parameter circuit model for the carbon ground electrode was verified. It is expected that the simulation methodology, which analyzes the frequency-dependent ground impedance of the carbon ground electrode proposed in this work, can be used in the design of a grounding system for protection against lightning.
Impulse characteristic of transmission tower grounding grid is needed for lightning protection of transmission line. This paper describes an outdoor experimental test facility established for large-scale grounding grid of transmission tower, made up of four impulse current generators and a circle current return electrode. The amplitude of impulse current is up to 100 kA. The results of the CDEGS simulation and GPR measurement reveal the uniform current distribution in the test arrangement. An impulse test for a square electrode with extended conductors is carried out in condition of three current waveforms with different amplitude. Based on the electrical network model and iterative algorithm method, a calculation model is proposed to simulate the impulse characteristic of large-scale grounding grid considering soil ionization. The curve of impulse resistance against the current amplitude shows the soil ionization both from the simulation and test. Deviation between the simulation and test result is less than 15%.

When the lightning current is injected to the ground system of information and communication facilities, analysis of the transient potential rise in the ground system is one of main factors to effectively design the ground system. The performance of grounding systems is normally estimated with the grounding impedance and the transient potential rise which represents the electrical characteristics of the grounding system. The method for calculating the grounding impedance depending on the injection point of the lightning current was proposed. The delta-gap source model was proposed to calculate the grounding impedance in the case that the lightning current is injected to the center of the horizontal ground electrode. A new program which is possible to apply the frequency-dependent soil parameters using the Debye model was developed, because a commercial program for analyzing the performance of the grounding system can not apply to the frequency-dependent soil parameters. The experiment was carried out to confirm the availability of the simulation results with the same condition. Finally, the transient potential rises of a horizontal ground electrode depending on the lightning current waveforms were analyzed by using the results of the grounding impedance which is associated with the frequency-dependent soil parameters.
