Design of the secondary tunnel lining using a ground-primary support-secondary lining interaction model

  • It is the common practice to reinforce excessively the secondary tunnel lining due to the lack of rational insights into the ground loosening loads. The main load of the secondary lining for drained-type tunnels is the ground loosening. The main cause of the load for secondary tunnel lining is the deterioration of the primary support members such as shotcrete, steel ribs, and rockbolts. Accordingly, the development of the analysis model to consider the ground-primary supports-secondary lining interaction is very important for the rational design of the secondary tunnel lining. In this paper, the interaction is conceptually described by the simple mass-spring model and the load transfer from the primary supports to the ground and the secondary lining is showed by the characteristic curves including the secondary lining reaction curve for the theoretical solution of a circular tunnel. And also, the application of this model to numerical analysis is verified in order to review the potential tool for practical tunnel problems with the complex conditions like non-circular shaped tunnels, multi-layered ground, sequential excavation and so on.

A study of tunnel concrete lining design using the ground-lining interaction model with the interface element (계면요소를 이용한 지반-라이닝 상호작용 모델에 의한 터널 콘크리트 라이닝 연구)

  • In NATM tunnel, the Ground-Lining Interaction model(GLI model) had been proposed a one of the numerical analysis as the ground load estimation method of the concrete lining. But this model was not applied with the interface mechanism between the ground and the support member or concrete lining. Therefor in this study, it is implemented as a model for closer than actual states that the interface element applied to the existing GLI model. And the modified GLI formula is proposed with the ground load estimation that is from the numerical results for each ground and rock cover conditions. Based on the numerical results, the ground load acting on concrete lining is reduced to ave. 88~106% in case of IV ground condition and ave. 47~57% in case of weathered soil condition comparing with the existing GLI model. It can be anticipated that the results obtained from this study can be applied to an estimation of the ground load on the concrete lining modeled like as real states, consistent and economical design.

  • It is the common practice to over design the reinforcement for the secondary tunnel lining due to the lack of rational insight into the ground loosening loads. and due to the conservative application of the empirical design methods. The main loads of the secondary lining are the ground Loosening loads and the ground water pressure, and the ground load is critical in the reinforcement design of the secondary lining in the case of drained tunnel. If the external load is absent around a tunnel, the reasons of the load far secondary tunnel lining are the deterioration of the primary supports such as shotcrete, steel rib, and rockbolts. Accordingly, the analysis method considering the ground-primary supports-secondary lining interaction should be required tar the rational design of the secondary tunnel lining. In this paper, the interaction was conceptually described by the simple mass-spring model and the load transfer from the ground and primary supports to the secondary lining is showed by the ground-primary supports-secondary lining reaction curves fur the theoretical solution of a circular tunnel.   • Tunnels are generally constructed below the ground water table, which produces a long-term interaction between the tunnel lining and the surrounding geo-materials. Thus, in conjunction with tunnel design, the presence of water may require a number of considerations such as: leakage and water load. It has been reported that deterioration of a drainage system of tunnels is one of the main factors governing the long-term hydraulic and structural lining-ground interaction. Therefore, the design procedure of an underwater tunnel should address any detrimental effects associated with this interaction. In this paper an attempt to identify the coupled structural and hydraulic interaction between the lining and the ground was made using a numerical method. A main concern was given to local hindrance of flow into tunnels. Six cases of local deterioration of a drainage system were considered to investigate the effects of deterioration on tunnels. It is revealed that hindrance of flow increased pore-water pressure on the deteriorated areas, and caused detrimental effects on the lining structures. The analysis results were compared with those from fully permeable and impermeable linings.

  • The structural analysis for the secondary lining of tunnels is generally performed by a frame analysis model. This model requires a ground loosening load estimated by some empirical methods, but the load is likely to be subjective and too large. The ground load acting on the secondary lining is due to the loss of the supporting function of the first support members such as shotcrete and rockbolts. Therefore, the equilibrium condition of the ground and the first support members should be considered to estimate the ground load acting on the secondary lining. Ground-lining interaction model, shortly GLI model, is developed on the basis of the concept that the secondary lining supports the ground deformation triggered by the loss of the support capacity of the first support members. Accordingly, the GLI model can take into account the ground load reflecting effectively not only the complex ground conditions but the installed conditions of the first support members. The load acting on the secondary lining besides the ground load includes the groundwater pressure and earthquake load. For the structural reinforcement of the secondary lining based on the ultimate strength design method, the factored load and various load combination should be considered. Since the GLI model has difficulty in dealing with the factored load, introduced in this study is the superposition principle in which the section moment and force of the secondary lining estimated for individual loads are multiplied by the load factors. Finally, the design method of the secondary lining using the GLI model is applied to the case of a shallow subway tunnel.

  • GLI model was verified to consider the interaction between a ground and a tunnel lining and to rationally reduce the ground load acting on the secondary lining(concrete lining) of a tunnel. In this study, the economy and the construction condition of tunnel concrete linings designed by a conventional frame model at Lot O of OO line were highly enhanced through a field design change using GLI model. For a few safe considerations, not only about 50% saving of reinforcing steel could reduce the material cost but also the wide space between bars could make it easy to pour concrete mix without voids. There was large saving effect of reinforcing steel for poor ground conditions because Terzaghi's load used in the conventional frame model produces too much high loads for those conditions.

  • This paper presents the interaction effect between tunneling and groundwater on tunnel behavior. A parametric study is then conducted on the various tunneling situations frequently encountered in Seoul area using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element model with emphasis on the effects of ground and lining permeabilities. It is shown that the ground and lining responses are significantly influenced by the relative permeability between the ground and the lining, and that the circumferential pre-grouting is effective in minimizing the tunnelling and groundwater interaction.

  • This paper presents the effect of groundwater on tunneling performance. The interaction between the tunneling and groundwater was examined using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element analysis, The results of the 3D coupled analysis were then compared with those of a total stress analysis. Examined items included pore pressures around lining and lining forces. Also examined include face displacements and ground surface movements, The results indicated that the interaction between the tunneling and ground water significantly increases the lining forces and ground deformations, and that the effect of ground water on tunneling can only be captured through a fully coupled analysis, Implementations of the findings from this study arc discussed in great detail.

  • Shield tunnel having circular section located in the soil or soft rock layer is liable to deform in such a way that its two diagonal diameters crossing each other expand and contract alternately during earthquakes. Based on this knowledge, the ground-tunnel interaction effect for this particular vibration mode is investigated. The ground surrounding a tunnel is assumed to be a homogeneous elastic medium. The bonded boundary condition on the ground-tunnel interface is considered. This suggests a firm bond between the ground and the tunnel lining. As Poisson's ratio and stiffness of the ground increases, the strain induced within the tunnel lining increases.

Simplified analytical solution of tunnel cross section under oblique incident SH wave in layered ground

  • A simplified analytical solution for seismic response of tunnel cross section in horizontally layered ground subjected to oblique incidence of SH wave is deduced in this paper. The proposed analytical solution consists of two main steps: free-field response in layered field and tunnel response. The free field responses of the layered ground are obtained by one-dimensional finite element method in time domain. The tunnel lining is treated as a thick-wall cylinder to calculate the tunnel response, which subject to free field stress. The analytical solutions are verified by comparing with the dynamic numerical results of two-dimensional ground-lining interaction analysis under earthquake in some common situations, which have a good agreement. Then, the appropriate range of the proposed analytical solution is analyzed, considering the height of the layered ground, the wavelength and incident angle of SH wave. Finally, by using the analytical solutions, the effects of the ground material, burial depth of the tunnel, and lining thickness and the slippage effect at the ground-lining interface on the seismic response of tunnels are investigated. The proposed solution could serve as a useful tool for seismic analysis and design of tunnels in layered ground.
