Ground water hydrology may be defined as the science of the occnrrence, distribution, and movement of water below the surface of the earth. Geohydrology has an identical connotation, and hydrogeology differs only by its greater emphasis on geology. Ground water referred to with out further specification is commonly understood to mean water occupying all the voids with in a geologic stratum. This saturated zone is tobe distinguished from an unsaturated, or aeration zone where voids are filled \yith water and air. Water contained in saturate:! zones is important for engineering works, geologic studies, and water supply developements Conseqently, the occurrence of water in these zones will be emphasized here. Un-saturated zones are usualiy found above saturated zones and extending upward to the ground surface. Because this water includes soil moisture with in the root zone, it is a major concern of agricultlre, botmy and soil science. No rigid demarcation of waters, between the two zones is possible, for they possess an iriterdependent boundary and water can move from zone to zone in either science, including eology, hydrology, meteorology, and oceanography are concerned with earths water, but ground water hydrology may be regarded as a specialized science combining elements of geology, hydrology, and fluid mechanics. Geology governs the occurrence and distribution of ground water, hydrology determines the supply of water to the ground, and fluid mechanics explains its movement. To provide maximum development of grofnd water resources. for benefical use requires thinking in terms of an entire ground water basin. In order to inorease the natural supply of ground water, man has attempted to artifially recharge ground water basins. Coastal aquifers come in contact with the ocean at seawater of the coastline. Fresh ground water is discharged in to the ocean. the seaward flow of ground water has been decreased or even reversed, Sea water penettating in land in aquifer.
This investagation was carried out by analyzing water types and measuring the environmetal isotopes (tritium and deuterium) for development of water resources and protection of ground waters from sea water intrusion. The water sample were taken monthly from April to June, 1983 from sixteen sites in the Cheju metropolitan area; three sea, three spring, and ten ground waters. The ground water in the midwest area of the city contained 20 TU of tritium and-46 per mille of deuterium, classified as the $NaHCO_3$ type of ground water, generally deep seated. The spring water and ground water in the southern part of the city contained 15 to of tritium and-39 per mile of deuterium, and appeared to the $CaHCO_3$ type of shallow ground water, easily affected 표 precipitation. The results of tritium and deuterium analyses showed that the ground water in the coastal area were not affected by sea water intrusion, although they changed from $NaHCO_3$ or $CaHCO_3$ type to NaCl type in May and June. It is concluded that the high Na and Cl content in those ground waters might come from municipal sewage. The sea water in the Yong-duam area was influenced by sping water.

Resulties of research on the capacity of ground water of 994 concrete-pipe-wells and 97 infiltration-gallerys in ground-water-developement-works region executed from March to Julyin 1969, in Choong Chung Nam Do, and research on the quality of ground water for 88 wells for home-use around of River Geum Area, are as fellows: (1) Thickness of aquifer is no more than 2.85m averagely even at river-overflowed plain, alluvial plain and valley plain area that are estimated to contain ground water mostly. And so, it is guessed that ground water capacity is not much especially. (2) Soil of aquifer of the above area is sand or gravel and it is estimated to be good for ground water developement and its mean permeability coefficient is bout $2.5{\times}10^{-3}$(m/sec), and its porosity is about 33.9%. (3) The quality of ground water is good for irrigation water exception of delta plain area. Warm water plan is to need for irrigation water when water temperature is less than 19 degrees below zero. (4) Prospect of ground water developement, judging from quality and quantity, expects to lay infiltration gallery under the ground at river bed in order to utilize under-flow-water of river bed, river-overflowed plain, alluvial plain and valley plain that ground level is less than 50m. (5) Collectable water volume of under-flow-water of river bed is about 450 to $750m^3/day$ to be able to irrigate 3ha to 5ha of the cultivated land in case that infiltration gallery length is 50m and its depth is about 5m. (6) Collectable water volume at river-overflowed plain, alluvial plain and valley plain area, is estimated $150m^3/day$ to be able to irrigated 1ha of the cultivated land.

The environmental tracers tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were investigated in ground water from Jeju Island, Korea, a basaltic volcanic island. The apparent 3H/3He and CFC-12 ages were in relatively good agreement in samples with low concentrations of terrigenic He. Ground water mixing was evaluated by comparing 3H and CFC-12 concentrations with mixing models, which distinguished old water with negligible 3H and CFC-12, young water with piston flow, and binary mixtures of the two end members. The ground water CFC-12 age is much older in water from wells completed in confined zones of the hydro-volcanic Seoguipo formation in coastal areas than in water from the basaltic aquifer. Comparison of major element concentrations in ground water with the CFC-12 age shows that nitrate contamination processes contribute more solutes in young water than are derived from water-rock interactions in non-contaminated old water. Chemical evolution of ground water resulting from silicate weathering in basaltic rocks reaches the zeolite-smectite phase boundary. The calcite saturation state of ground water increased with the CFC-12 apparent (piston flow) age. In agricultural areas, the temporal trend of nitrate concentration in ground water was consistent with the known history of chemical fertilizer use on Jeju Island, but the response of nitrate concentration in ground water to nitrogen inputs follows an approximate 10-year delay. Based on mass balance calculations, it was estimated that about 40% of the nitrogen applied by fertilizers reached the water table and contaminated ground water resources when the fertilizer use was at the highest level.

Nutrients were investigated for surface water and ground water of paddy field and upland in a rural watershed from May 2008 to January 2009. The cocentrations of TN and $NO_3-N$ in ground water higher than those in surface water due to fertilization on cabbage upland neighboring a river during May to September, but lower than those in surface water during October to January. However, the concentrations TP and $PO_4-P$ in ground water were lower than those in surface water. TP and $PO_4-P$ concentrations in ground water of paddy field were generally lower than those of upland.
The Effluent ground water overflows in deep and broad ground space building. Temperature of effluent ground water is in 12$\sim$18$^{\circ}C$ annually and the quality of that water is as good as living water. Therefore if the flow rate of effluent ground water is sufficient as source of heat pump, that is good heat source and heat sink of heat pump. Effuent ground water contain the thermal energy of surrounding ground. So this is a new application of ground source heat pump. In this study open type and close type heat pump system using effluent ground water was installed and tested for a church building with large and deep ground space. The effluent flow rate of this building is 800$\sim$1000 ton/day. The heat pump capacity is 5RT each. The heat pump system heating COP was 3.0$\sim$3.3 for the open type and 3.3$\sim$3.8 for the close type system. The heat pump system cooling COP is 3.2$\sim$4.5 for the open type and 3.8$\sim$4.2 for close type system. This performance is up to that of BHE type ground source heat pump.

Recently, we reported that Jeju ground water contains vanadium components and exerts antioxidant effects in vitro and in vivo via the scavenging of reactive oxygen species and enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activities. In the present study, the antioxidant actions of Jeju ground water were compared with those of tap water against gamma-ray radiation in mice. C57BL/6 mice were irradiated with gamma-ray at a dose rate of 2 Gy. The mice were then given tap water or Jeju ground water for 90 days. Jeju ground water compared with tap water enhanced the activities and levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in irradiated liver tissues. Jeju ground water also enhanced the levels of intracellular reduced glutathione, which is vital for normal liver function and repair. These results suggest that vanadium-containing Jeju ground water can safeguard against the harmful actions of gamma-ray radiation through the support of hepatic antioxidant processes.

The present study proposed to examine the appropriateness of the ground water level condition that had a significant effect on the stability of the slopes and, for this purpose, analyzed the rise of ground water level during the rainy season by applying the average daily rainfall of Seoul for the last 30 years. The result showed that the rise of ground water level was 6.0$\sim$41.0% of the slope height, which suggests that the currently applied condition of ground water level is somewhat overestimated. In addition, the result of interpreting the stability of slopes during the rainy season, slopes were unstable in all conditions when the ground water level was at the ground surface and base failure occurred. This suggests the importance of ground water level condition in stability analysis.

The improvement effect of soft ground is estimated by unconfined strength mainly. The unconfined strength of solidification agent treated soil is likely to vary with ununiformed mixing ratio and water content change of in-situ ground place by place. So, it is unreasonable to apply a solidification agent mixing ratio obtained from laboratory test results on all over the soft ground. In this study, it was analysed how the unconfined strength would be effected by the water content of soft ground. For this study, a series of unconfined compressive tests are peformed on various water content soil samples. The test results showed that the strength was fallen to 30∼80% by two times increase of water content approximately, This means that strength of solidification agent treated soil is influenced greatly by water content of raw soft ground and mixing ratio of solidification agent. It was suggested that the method how to decide the mixing ratio with soft ground water content.

In a case of an example in Korea, some areas of Yangsan near Busan which exist on soft ground with aquifer, showed us some difficulties of the preparing for housing site and earth structures. From these experiences, recently, the development and research of technology is getting increased, which minimize the influence to the environment from construction work, which is in an agreement with eco-friendly construction in terms of the reasonable processing of ground water. On this case study, one area of Japan that has many site on soft ground with aquifer, is introduced as the reasonable processing of ground water. The applications of the technology for ground water in Korea are discussed.
