In case of a line-to-ground fault at transmission lines, a portion of fault current will flow into the earth through the footings of the faulted tower causing electrical potential rise nearby the faulted tower footings. In this situation, any buried pipelines or structures nearby the faulted tower can be exposed to the electrical stress by earth potential rise. Although many research works has been conducted on this phenomena, there has been no clear answer of the required separation distance between tower footings and neary buried pipeline because of its dependancy on the soil electrical charactersics of the concerned area and the faulted system. In this paper, an analytical formula to calculate the requried sepeartion distance from the faulted tower has been derived.

Although DC ground resistance is a good index of performance for a grounding system, it does not reflect the grounding performance during the transient states. Besides, impulse ground impedance, which is defined by a ratio of the peak value of transient ground potential rise to the peak value of impulse current, cannot be an absolute performance index due to its dependence on impulse current shape. In this paper, a grounding performance of needle-typed ground rod has been compared with simple ground rod using HIFREQ[1], which is an engineering electro-magnetic code based on MoM (Method of Moment).
This paper deals with the pulse generator using PFN(Pulse Forming Network), and its operation characteristics and application. Two kinds of pulse generator were composed of the best appropriate condition circuit. The output current of the one pulse generator has the rise time of 28 ns and the pulse duration of $7{\mu}s$. The other pulse generator has high current of about 2kA. By use of the former generator with rapid rise time, the impulse impedance characteristic of ground electrodes was investigated with measuring the ground potential rise when the pulse current was injected into the ground electrode.

This paper presents the behaviors of transient and effective impulse impedances of a long ground rod associated with the current injection points. The laboratory test for the time domain performance of actual-sized model ground rod subjected to a lightning stroke current has been carried out The transient ground impedances of long ground rods under impulse currents were higher than the ground resistance. Both of the ground resistance and the effective impulse ground impedance decrease with increasing the length of the ground rods. Also, the effective impulse ground impedances are significantly increased in fast rise time ranges. The reduction of the ground resistance is decisive to improve the impulse impedance characteristics of grounding systems. When the test current is injected at the bottom of ground rod, the oscillating pulses with high frequency are included on the wave front of ground rod potential and the effective impulse impedances are higher than any other cases.

This paper deals with the transient ground impedance of small-sized needle-rod installed in a test field, Impulse voltage generator was used to inject lightning impulse on a ground electrode and modified fall-of potential method was proposed to measure the high ground potential rise. Transient ground impedance was analysed with impedance curve and I-V curve as respects the resistivity of soil. Soil ionization near the ground electrode is activated in high resistivity soil and have an effect on the reduction of transient ground impedance significantly.

This paper describes an advanced measuring method and precise evaluation of the ground resistance for the grounding system of energized substations and power equipments. A grounding system of substations consists of all interconnected grounding connections of grounded conductors, neutral ground wires, underground conductors of distribution lines, cable shields, grounding terminals of equipments, and etc. It is very difficult to measure the accurate ground resistance of the grounding terminals of equipments, and etc. It is very difficult to measure the accurate ground resistance of the grounding system of high voltage energized substations because of harmonic components caused by switched power supplies or overloads. The conventional fall-of-potential method may be subject to big error if stray ground currents and potentials are present. In this work, to improve the precision in measurements of the ground resistance by eliminating the effects of harmonic components and stray currents and potentials, the investigations of the ground resistance measurement by using a low pass filter in a model energized grounding system were conducted. The accuracy of ground resistance mesurements was evaluated as a function of the ratio of the test signal to noise (S/N). The errors due to the proposed ground resistance measurement method were decreased with increasing S/N and were less than 5[%] as S/N is 10. The proposed ground resistance measurement method appears to be considerably more accurate than the conventional fall-of -potential method. It is allows cancellation of the parasitic resistance of energized grounding systems, to employ the measurement method that allows cancellation of the parasitic effects due to other circulating ground currents and ground potential rises in practical situations.

Grounding systems set the reference voltage level of electric circuits and suppress the Ground Potential Rise (GPR) by flowing fault currents to the ground safely. There are several parameters which evaluate the performance of grounding systems as ground resistance, touch voltage and step voltage. The touch and step voltages, which is called "risk voltage", are especially important to ensure the safety of human body. This paper dealt with the influence of current sources with the different frequency components on the touch and the step voltages. Three types of current sources as commercial frequency, square wave, and surge with the fast risetime of $50\;ns{\sim}500\;ns$ were used to analyze the risk voltages in a grounding system. The risk voltages showed remarkable difference in the same current amplitude depending on the current sources, and increased linearly with the current amplitude in the same current source. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that the risk voltages can be evaluated by a small current application in large-scale grounding systems and the possible largest risk voltage can be calculated by a surge current with the risetime of 200 ns or a current source with the same frequency component as the surge current.
In order to analyze the potential rise of ground surface of grounding grid installed in buildings, the grounding simulator has been designed and fabricated as substantial and economical measures. This paper describes the study of touch and step voltages with grounding grid where earth leakage current is injected. To assess risk voltage of grounding grid, the grounding simulator and CDEGS program were used to obtain measured data and theoretical results of this study. The grounding simulator was composed of an electrolytic tank, AC power supply, a movable potentiometer, and test grounding electrodes. The potential rise was measured by grounding simulator, and the touch and step voltages were computed by CDEGS program. As a consequence, the touch voltage and step voltage above the grounding grid were very low, but were significantly increased near the edge of grounding grid.

This paper presents the ground surface potential profiles and hazard voltages around the metallic structure connected to a small-sized model ground electrode. Because it is very difficult to draw valid conclusions concerning a general grounding problem from actual field data, scale model tests can be used to determine the touch and stop voltages and surface potential profiles around ground electrode. In this work, a hemispherical vessel with a diameter of 1,100[mm] was employed to simulate uniform soil. As a result, the ground surface potential around the ground electrode was significantly raised In particular the ground surface potential at the just upper point of ground rod was higher than other points. When the buried depth of ground rod is increased, the ground surface potential and step voltage were lowered but the touch voltage was elevated.
