A Study on the Improvement of the Stability of Small-Scale Manpower Tunnels for Food Storage (식품저장용 소규모 인력터널의 안정성 향상을 위한 방안 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to review the safety of small tunnels for food storage excavation in the 1960s~1970s and to improve the stability of small tunnels. Method: A visual inspection and a hammer test were used to conduct safety tests, and the visual inspection is one of the tests conducted for non-destructive testing, and the hammer test is one of the types of hitting methods of rebound hardness. Result: According to the integrated analysis of the survey area data, there are generally good appearance, but there are many small cracks and complex geological conditions, requiring continuous observation and attention. Seven of the 23 tunnels require safety diagnosis, one collapse, one safe, and 14 require continuous observation and attention. Conclusion: All parts of small tunnels should be checked and recorded from time to time, and stability is expected to be improved when reinforcing small tunnels proposed in this study.

MIG-WELDING OF MAGNESIUM ALLOYS WITH PARTICULAR CONSIDERATION OF DROP DETACHMENT

  • During the last years, great progress has been made in the fields of welding power sources and filler materials for the MIG-welding of magnesium alloys. This advice resulted in a better welding process, md, therefore, in highly improved welding results. Furthermore the gap between short-circuiting- and spray-arc-trunsfer could be closed by the triggered short-circuiting- and the short-circuiting-arc with pulse overlay. A crucial contribution to the welding process is the energy input into the filler material. Many problems result from the physical properties of magnesium, for instance its narrow interval between melting point 600$^{\circ}C$ and vaporization point 1100$^{\circ}C$. The energy input into the filler material has to be regulated in such a way that the wire will melt but not vaporize. For th is reason, special characteristics of power sources hue been examined and optimized with the help of high-speed-photographs of the welding process with particular consideration of the drop detachment. An important improvement of the weld seam profile has been achieved by using filler material of only 1.2 mm in diameter. The experiments hue been made with 2.5 mm thick extruded profiles of AZ31 and AZ6l. The results of tensile testing showed strength values of 80 to 100% of the base metal. B ending angles up to 60$^{\circ}$ have been reached. The fatigue strength under reversed bending of the examined magnesium alloys after welding reaches 50% of the strength of the base metal. When the seam reinforcement is ground of the fatigue strength can be raised up to 75% of the base metal.

New Approach of the Existing Reinforced Slope Risk Evaluation Method (기존보강사면에 대한 위험도 평가기술 개발에 대한 연구)

  • This paper presents a new approach of risk evaluation method for the reinforced slopes. In order to perform this study, the existing stability and risk evaluation methods are reviewed and analysed in terms of rainfall, ground condition, and drain conditions. According to the characteristic of the reinforced slopes improved by internal and external reinforcement, the nineteen influence factors are determined in order to develop new risk analysis model based on 'Interaction matrix' approach suggested by Hudson (1991). Using new approach of slope risk analysis model, the weighting values for interaction factors are analysed and determined. Based on new slope risk evaluation approach, the slope risk index, namely SRI (Slope Risk Index) is developed in this study to apply the evaluation of the reinforced slopes. In order to verify the SRI, a total of 15 cases are studied and analysed. The analysed results are compared and evaluated. According to the results, it is deduced that new slope risk evaluation method (SRI approach) IS very useful and practically a reliable method to evaluate the existing slopes.

A New Design Method of Reinforcement Ahead of a Tunnel Face by using Convergence-confinement Method and Load-transfer Approach (내공변위-제어법과 새로운 하중전이함수를 이용한 터널 천단보강공 설계)

  • In this study the behavior of a steel pipe structure used as an auxiliary method was evaluated by the convergence-confinement method and load-transfer approach, and the result was compared with that of numerical approach and in-situ measured data. As calculated partially increased displacement of the installed pipe to obtain the tunnel displacement. A numerical analysis simulate well the general behavior of measured displacement of tunnel crown. Through this study, it was found that the proposed procedure produces conservative result so that it can be applied in preliminary design of the auxiliary method of tunnel face.

A study on the comparison by the methods of estimating the relaxation load of SEM-pile (SEM파일의 이완하중 산정방법별 이완하중량 비교 연구)

  • With the increased development in downtown underground space facilities that vertically cross under a railway at a shallow depth, the demand for non-open cut method is increasing. However, most construction sites still adopt the pipe roof method, where medium and large diameter steel pipes are pressed in to form a roof, enabling excavation of the inside space. Among the many factors that influence the loosening region and loads that occur while pressing in steel pipes, the size of the pipe has the largest impact, and this factor may correspond to the magnitude of load applied to the underground structure inside the steel pipe roof. The super equilibrium method (SEM) has been developed to minimize ground disturbance and loosening load, and uses small diameter pipes of approximately 114 mm instead of conventional medium and large diameter pipes. This small diameter steel pipe is called an SEM pile. After SEM piles are pressed in and the grouting reinforcement is constructed, a crossing structure is pressed in by using a hydraulic jack without ground subsidence or heaving. The SEM pile, which plays the role of timbering, is a fore-poling pile of approximately 5 m length that prevents ground collapse and supports surface load during excavation of toe part. The loosening region should be adequately calculated to estimate the spacing and construction length of the piles and stiffness of members. In this paper, we conducted a comparative analysis of calculations of loosening load that occurs during the press-in of SEM pile to obtain an optimal design of SEM. We analyzed the influence of factors in main theoretical and empirical formulas applied for calculating loosening regions, and carried out FEM analysis to see an appropriate loosening load to the SEM pile. In order to estimate the soil loosening caused by actual SEM-pile indentation and excavation, a steel pipe indentation reduction model test was conducted. Soil subsidence and soil loosening were investigated quantitatively according to soil/steel pipe (H/D).

Considerations on ground preparation for the Gimhae Bonghwang-dong Ruins (김해 봉황동 유적 대지조성에 대한 소고(小考))

  • The Bonghwang-dong ruins in Gimhae, the central area of Geumgwan Gaya, is presumed to be the site of the royal palace, and excavations have been in progress at the Gaya National Cultural Heritage Research Institute. According to a research conducted by lowering the level to the base layer on the north side of the site, mostly shell layers composed of oysters were confirmed, and soil composed of different material was alternately filled in to form a site construction. In other words, it can be seen that there was work at the site of the Bonghwang-dong ruins that required large-scale labor, such as building ramparts and embankments. There is stratigraphic confusion such as showing different age values in the same shell layer through a chronological analysis of organic matter and charcoal in the sedimentary layer, and deriving a result value in the upper layer ahead of the lower layer. In addition, open-sea diatoms are observed not only in the sedimentary layers, but also the pits. Therefore, it is judged that the soil constituting the ruins was brought from the outside. The Bonghwang-dong ruins are located inside the commonly called Bonghwang earthen ramparts, where many excavation organizations conducted research within the estimated range of the earthen fortifications. As a result, it was found that it was similar to the sedimentary layers of the ruins of the Three Kingdoms Period, which were investigated along with the ruins of Bonghwang-dong. Through this, the surrounding ruins, including those of Bonghwang-dong, were located close to paleo-Gimhae Bay, so it is believed that the soil brought from the surroundings was used to reinforce the ground. As a result of the excavation research on the Bonghwang-dong ruins conducted so far, it was found by sedimentary layer analysis and soil experiments that the ruins were created on stable land. Relics excavated in the sediments of the ruins and carbon dating data show that Bonghwang-dong carried out large-scale civil construction work in the 4th century to build the site, which clearly shows the status of Geumgwan Gaya.

Bearing Capacity Analyses of Shallow Foundations in Reinforced Slopes

  • Recently, foundations of heavy structures such as bridge abutments have been built on slopes or near the crest of slopes at an increasing rate. Because the bearing capacity of such foundations is considerably lower than the bearing capacity of the same soil on a level ground, deep footings such as piles and caissons are often used. However, the costs of such methods are generally very high. One of the new techniques to overcome the problem is to place reinforcing members such as geosynthetics or metal strips horizontally at some depths beneath the footings. Rational methods of analysis to predict the bearing capacity of footings in reinforced slopes are therefore needed. This paper proposes an analytical method for estimating the increase in bearing capacity gained from the included horizontal strips or ties of tensile reinforcing in the foundation soil below the footing built near the crest of a slope. A failure mechanism, including the concept of'wide slab effect', adopted in the present study for analyzing the bearing capacity of foundations in reinforced slopes, is established through the observed model test behaviors described by Binquet SE Lee and Huang et al, and the Boussinesq solutions. The analytical results are then compared with the experimental data described in the paper by Huang et al. Also in order to properly evaluate the soil reinforcement interaction, typical pullout test values of the apparent friction coefficient, which usually vary with depths owing to both the increase of the shearing volume and the increase in local stress caused by soil dilatancy, are analyzed and related functionally. Furthermore, analytical parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect and significance of various pertinent parameters associated with design of reinforced slope foundations. Study on the Characteristics of the Hibernating Site for the Released Asiatic Black Bear in Jirisan National Park (지리산국립공원에 방사한 반달가슴곰 동면장소 특성 연구)

  • Asiatic black Bear(Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) cubs aged one or two were introduced from Russia(Primosky krai) and North Korea for reinforcement of the bear population and they were released to grow wild in Jirisan National Park. We did research on the characteristics of the denning sites of the Asiatic black cubs, which were released before, from Oct. 2004 to Apr. 2006, and the results were as follows: The released bears hibernated in three types of dens,; tree hollows, rock hollows or ground nests. The hibernating sites were dominated by a community of oak trees and its location was at an average of $923{\pm}221m$ height above the sea level ; the average slope incline was $25.9{\pm}7.9^{\circ}$, and the average denning duration was $98{\pm}9$ days. It was analyzed that the cubs' denning site was $2.8{\pm}2.8km$, on an average, far from the release point; $2.0{\pm}0.9km$ far from villages; $1.9{\pm}1.7km$ far from park inspection trails, and $1.9{\pm}1.0km$ on the average far from a driveway. It is assumed that environmental attributes of the denning sites were closely correlated to those of the release points.

A Study for the Applicable Bearing-Resistance of Bearing Anchor in the Enlarged-Borehole (지압형 앵커의 지압력 산정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • An almost permanent anchor (friction type) is resistant to ground deformation due to the friction between the soil and grout at a fixed length from the anchor body. The purpose of this study is to calculate the force of bearing resistance for a bearing anchor in enlarged boreholes. We conducted analytical and numerical analyses, along with laboratory testing, to find the quantities of bearing resistance prior to grouting in EBA (Enlarged Bearing Anchor) construction. The force of bearing resistance from the analytical method was defined as a function of general borehole diameter, expanded borehole diameter, and soil unconfined compressive strength. We also employed the Flac 3D finite difference numerical modeling code to analyze the bearing resistance of the soil conditions. We then created a laboratory experimental model to measure bearing resistance and carried out a pull-out test. The results of these three analyses are presented here, and a regression analysis was performed between bearing resistance and uniaxial compression strength. The laboratory results yield the strongest bearing resistance, with reinforcement 28.5 times greater than the uniaxial compression strength; the analytical and numerical analyses yielded values of 13.3 and 9.9, respectively. This results means that bearing resistance of laboratory test appears to be affected by skin friction resistance. To improve the reliability of these results, a comparison field study is needed to verify which results (analytical, numerical, or laboratory) best represent field observations.

A Study on the Prediction of Buried Rebar Thickness Using CNN Based on GPR Heatmap Image Data (GPR 히트맵 이미지 데이터 기반 CNN을 이용한 철근 두께 예측에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a study was conducted on the method of using GPR data to predict rebar thickness inside a facility. As shown in the cases of poor construction, such as the use of rebars below the domestic standard and the construction of reinforcement, information on rebar thickness can be found to be essential for precision safety diagnosis of structures. For this purpose, the B-scan data of GPR was obtained by gradually increasing the diameter of rebars by making specimen. Because the B-scan data of GPR is less visible, the data was converted into the heatmap image data through migration to increase the intuition of the data. In order to compare the results of application of commonly used B-scan data and heatmap data to CNN, this study extracted areas for rebars from B-scan and heatmap data respectively to build training and validation data, and applied CNN to the deployed data. As a result, better results were obtained for the heatmap data when compared with the B-scan data. This confirms that if GPR heatmap data are used, rebar thickness can be predicted with higher accuracy than when B-scan data is used, and the possibility of predicting rebar thickness inside a facility is verified.
