  • This study aims to develop a computerized program for analysis of the ground-supported cylindrical shell structure with step varied section and to find out its mechanical characteri- stics through application of the developed program to the analysis of a ensiled farm silo as a model structure. The thickness of wall and bottom-plate of farm silo is assumed to be step-varied and its detailed structural dimensions are presented in Tab. 1 and 2. Several numerical case studies show that sectional stresses of the sample structures are largely reduced by adopting "varied section" design technique. And, other major results ob- tained from this study are summarize4 as follows ; 1. The variation of wall-thickness has a great influence on bending stresses of wall. Ho- wever, the larger the relative thickness of bottom-plate is, the smaller the influence is. 2. The magnitude of thickness of projecting toe of bottom-plate has negligible effect on sectional stresses 3. The conventional design methodology, which assumes the bottom edge of wall as clam- ped on ground, is proved to be discarded through the numerical analysis. 4. It is found that the "varied section" design technique should get similar effects as in the case of thick bott6m-plate having uniform thickness. 5. The variation of wall-thickness has a considerable effect on the bending stresses of bo- ttom-plate. Especially, this phenomenon is very remarkable in its projecting toe. In some cases. the negative bending moment may be acted on.

  • Experiments are performed to consider the ground effects on unsteady loading and acoustic generation. Partially inclined plate is used to maximize the unsteadiness of the rotor. Indirect method to recognize the unsteady effect is used by measuring the noise in the normal direction from the rotor plane. The experiment is conducted with a square plate of about $9m^2$ and one half of the plate is placed parallel with the rotor plane and the other half is inclined. The height of the plate and the angle of the inclined plate can be changed. Helicopter noise is also measured at the 4 different positions to study the directivity of the rotor noise. The distance between microphone and rotor hub is 1.3m. Tonal noise and broad band noise are measured and analyzed. Thickness noise, steady loading noise and unsteady loading noise are investigated from the rotor noise measurement.

  • Recently, oystershell wastes cause serious environmental problem and the need for the researches on the recycling of oystershell have been increased and various methods are already in operation. Field plate bearing tests and numerical analysis were performed to investigate the bearing capacity of oystershell filled geotextile gabion which utilized the waste oystershell at the coastal oyster farm site. The waste oystershell mixed soil specimens were prepared for the laboratory test and field test in terms of varying blending ratio of granite soil and oystershell. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the spring constant, subgrade modulus of ground, and the reinforcing parameters were determined. The field plate load test results indicate that the bearing capacity of the soil ground with the oystershell mixed ratio of 20% is greater than that of the original ground. Two-dimensional numerical analysis was evaluated the expected deformation in the given conditions. Analysis results show a similar characteristics on bearing capacity with the results of the field plate load test. These findings suggest that the oystershells are very promising construction materials for landfill and earth embankment in coastal area.

  • The wing in ground effect (WIG) ship is an energy saying vessel that uses the lift from its air-wing along with the lift increase from the ground effect by flying low above the sea surface. The WIG Ship should consist of thin plate in order to float on the sea and to fly in the air. Therefore, the structure of WIG, Ship has very thin and light shell plate and stiffener like stringer and frame has comparatively large cross section area. This structure makes shell plate nearly pure shear field when shell plate is pressed by in-plane load. This complex thin plate structure of WIG Ship can he considered as a closed section beam which makes it possible to analyze structure response of WIG Ship affected by shear load and bending load. In this respect, the present study will show basic theory for analysing shear stress and focus on the analysis of structure strength of model WIC Ship's wing.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the applicability of the conventional design method for ground supported circular cylindrical shell structures. For this purpose, the ensiled farm silo was adopted as a model structures. Herein, the conventional design method was based on the assumption that such structures are clamped at the bottom edges or the ground pressure is independent of the deflection at the surface. In the present paper, the applicability of above assumption was checked out by comparison with an exact method considering soil-structure interaction. Some results of numerical calculation show us ; When the ground is very hard, for example Winkler's constant k is larger than 100 kg / cm$^2$ / cm, or the bottom plate of structures has a infinitely stiffness, for example the bottom plate thickness is larger than 100 cm, the sectional forces, obtained from the conventional method at any wall of structures resting on an elastic foundation, can used for design purpose. Therefore, if the above condition is satisfied then the conventional assumptions can be justified for the design purpose. In this case, the assumption that such structures are fixed at the lower edges was more realistic than the assumption that the reaction pressure acting on structures is uniformly disributed since the accuracy of results of the analysis by the former assumption was higher than that obtained from the latter assumption. But the sectional forces in the bottom plate resting on ground directly could not be evaluate correctly by the conventional method.

  • In this paper, we present parametric studies for the optimum design of a hexagonal plate monopole antenna. The dependence of the antenna performance on various geometric parameters is investigated using a commercial electromagnetic software, from which an optimum design of a hexagonal plate monopole antenna is derived. Guidelines for determining initial parameter values are given. The diameter of the circular ground plane is minimized tlo 1/5 wavelength at the lowest operating frequency. The antenna impedance matching is controlled by adjusting the gap between the plate and the ground plane, the plate base width, and the base bevel angle. The antenna proposed in. this paper shows a reflection coefficient less than -10 dB and a $2.0{\sim}6.2$ dBi gain over $3{\sim}20$ GHz frequencies.

  • Although pile driver overturning accidents at construction site are not frequent, most leads to serious disasters. The main cause of accidents is uneven settlement of the ground. To prevent this, related guidelines such as KOSHA-C-101-2014, KOSH-A-GUIDE-71-2012, Occupational Safety and Health Standards, and NCS stipulate the installation of steel plates over ground. However, since the required steel plate thickness considering the self-weight of pile drivers and the underlying ground condition is not quantitatively presented, it is randomly applied in the field. In this study, the required minimum steel plate thickness was analyzed based on a numerical analysis (Plaxis 2D). Settlements and soil failure were calculated according to the different type of soils (sand, clay), load distribution and steel plate thickness (10mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm). Under all conditions, 10mm steel plate causes soil collapse. From thickness 20mm, the ground uneven subsidence is within 2° of the allowable leader angle.

  • The vertical design spectrum for Korea, which is known to belong to an intra-plate region, is developed from the ground motion records of the earthquakes occurred in Korea and overseas intra-plate regions. From the statistical analysis of the vertical response spectra, a mean plus one standard deviation spectrum in lognormal distribution is obtained. Regression analysis is performed on this curve to determine the shape of spectrum including transition periods. The developed design spectrum is valid for the estimation both spectral acceleration and displacement. The ratio of vertical to horizontal response spectrum for each record is calculated. Statistical analysis of the ratios rendered the vertical to horizontal ratio (V/H ratio). Subsequently the ratio between the peak vertical ground acceleration to the horizontal one is obtained.

  • Driving performance is affected by a steering mechanism and characteristics of the ground at off-road skateboarding. In order to drive on off-road, it is necessary off-road wheel and high performance steering mechanism to adapt on various configuration of the ground. In this paper, design factors are studied to affect to steering radius such as inclination angle of a king-bolt, distance of a wheel axle, and rolling angle of a deck plate. A steering system is adhered to inclination face of the deck plate. And, inclination angle is existed between the king-bolt and the flat face of the deck plate. Therefore, the wheel axle of the steering system can be steered by control of the rolling angle of the deck plate.

  • The design spectrum for Korea, which is known to belong to an intra-plate region, is developed from the ground motion records of the earthquakes occurred in Korea and overseas intra-plate regions. The horizontal spectrum is defined as geometric mean spectrum, GMRotI50. From the statistical analysis of the geometric mean spectra, a mean plus one standard deviation spectrum in lognormal distribution is obtained. Regression analysis is performed on this curve to determine the shape of spectrum including transition periods. The developed design spectrum is valid for the estimation both spectral acceleration and displacement.
