Purpose - This paper explores the perceptions held by native grocery shop-owners of their foreign counterparts to ascertain if there are lessons to be shared especially regarding operational/survival strategies. Research design, data and methodology - A questionnaire was used to collect data from 121 subjects who were purposively selected. The data was processed and analysed with the aid of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(SPSS) software. Results - The study found that native South Africans hold the perception that immigrants have operational advantage over them. The study also found that with bulk buying, immigrants' stores stock a larger variety of groceries while their items are sold cheaper. It is also arguable from the standpoint of the findings that immigrant grocery store owners avoid expensive lifestyles which often is common among natives who own informal grocery shops. Conclusions - It is the position of this paper that adopting the strategies utilized by immigrant entrepreneurs, informal grocery shops owned by native South Africans are likely to see an improvement in their township-based grocery stores. A major merit of this study beyond its novelty is its potential to advance learnership and collaboration between immigrant entrepreneurs and their native counterparts.
There was a new wave in grocery business with development of information and technology, thus a movement from traditional stores to online stores, In order to expand the scale of traditional supermarket and to satisfy the customers' needs, they provide offline and online services simultaneously. This paper is based on the previous studies which had been researched in developed countries from late 1990s to early 2000s and the purpose of this study is to introduce the idea and operation system of e-Grocery business. Moreover, we suggest the alternatives on delivery service methods in order to satisfy the customers' needs through analyzing the current condition of e-Grocers in Korea. According to the result of this study, Korean e-Grocers offer only attended home delivery services. In our opinion, Korean supermarkets have to take hybrid model which Tesco.com is using. There are some alternatives to increase the profits of Korean e-Grocers and to provide better services to their customers as follows: As an alternatives for delivery services, picking service is the easiest and cheapest way to apply for supermarkets. This is very useful for working women and also it is possible to order by smartphone recently. They can order the goods to the closest local supermarkets from working place, and then they pick them up on the way home from working off. In order to improve the quality of delivery services, to use the reception box will be the way to provide better services to the customers. The reception box is a way to protect the quality of goods such as fresh-cut product, which require the freshness through the temperature adjustment, and also to keep the safety of ordered goods through locking system Through this system, supermarkets are able to use attended or unattended services under the customers' satisfaction. However, using the reception box is expensive, so shared reception box will be an alternative. As an alternative for development of e-Grocery business, the advertisement for e-Grocery business has to be supported in order to attract potential customers in e-Grocery business. Furthermore, the main concerns of e-Grocery business such as the sanitation and safety of goods, and convenience must be guaranteed in order to keep the loyal customers and to attract new customers.

Mobile Grocery Shopping (MGS) has become the New Normal as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way consumers shop. Drawing on the framework of Customer Journey Map (CJM), this study explores consumers' MGS by identifying specific stages of Customer Journey and comparing consumers' satisfaction between PC-based online and mobile shopping experiences at each stage throughout the journey. This study collected 562 responses from subjects who have mobile and PC-based grocery shopping experiences at the major domestic e-Commerce platforms. Independent t-test analysis showed that differences in satisfaction between mobile and online shopping experiences exist in 5 main stages and 16 sub-stages of CJM. The results of service and technological innovation mentioned in the actual industry report were seen as empirical results leading to continued use of MGS as well as customer satisfaction. The findings of this study contribute to the research stream on Customer Journey by adopting the structure of CJM and analyzing specific stages of the journey in the context of MGS. Managerial implications for mobile-based business practitioners are also discussed.
As the retail industry has been challenged by stiff competition, the retailer becomes more interested in better understanding consumers' in-store behavior to gain and sustain competitive advantage. Consumers' shopping paths provide valuable clues to understanding customers' in-store behavior, which has been a long standing research issue in business. This study is to explore the shopping path patterns in a grocery using RFID technology and clustering method. To this end, we designed the RFID systems, affixing active RFID tags to the bottom of grocery carts. The tag emit signal that is received by receptors installed at various location throughout the store. The RFID systems provide the time and location of the cart while consumers shop around the store. The point of sale data are matched with the cart movement records to provide a complete picture of each shopping path. To find the distinctive patterns of consumers' shopping paths, we proposed the distance-index matrix using dijkstra method and normalization method to conduct the clustering in order to handle the problem in measuring the similarity among shopping paths, which is raised by the spatial nature of consumer movement in a grocery. After analyzing the RFID data obtained in one of the groceries in a major Korean retailer, we could successfully identify several distinctive patterns of shopping paths, which prove to provide the valuable implications for store management.
In nowadays, Covid-19 has transformed patterns of consumers' behavior into a non-face-to-face mode. As the patterns of consumption have been digitalized, it has become a daily routine for consumers who perform so-called shadow work, which involves unpaid jobs that they have to do by themselves. In mobile grocery service context, consumers' shadow work could lead to shopping avoidance as well as switching toward other shopping channels. Thus, this study is to examine how consumers' perception of shadow work affect mobile shopping avoidance and switching intention toward other shopping channels. This study collected 283 survey data from online respondents who have experience on subscription services for ordering groceries in online. We also tested our research model by using partial least squares. Based on our results, this study has found that the perception of shadow work had a positive effect on mobile shopping avoidance as well as switching intention. We expect that our findings could contribute to relevant research on shadow work and suggest practical implications for digital platforms dealing with subscription business models
Purpose: The aim of this study is to understand the internal and external responses that consumers experience when they are exposed to an innovative system in retail stores. This study considered the SST(Self-Service Technology) system in a retail setting as a type of functional environmental stimuli and selected a smart shopping cart as an example of SST system. The influences of functional environmental stimuli on consumers' emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses were examined by applying S-O-R model. In addition, this study attempted to extend the traditional S-O-R model by (a) incorporating personal characteristics variables such as time pressure and perceived crowding and (b) considering not only emotional but also cognitive aspects of consumers' internal responses. Research Design, Data, and Methodology: This study used a video-scenario technique. Participants watched a video about grocery shopping situations using a smart shopping cart and responded to their emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses. An online survey was conducted using Amazon's Mechanical Turk (N = 185). All participants were US consumers over 20 years old and had been shopping at the grocery store in the last month. Data were analyzed through structural equations modeling with AMOS 20. Results: Test results showed that consumers who perceived higher levels of time pressure and perceived crowding in usual shopping situations were more likely to evaluate the SST system favorably. The results showed that personal characteristics have a significant impact on consumers' evaluation of functional environmental stimuli in retail setting. As consumers evaluated the SST system favorably, they experienced more positive affect and less negative affect during their shopping behaviors. Positive affect led to good service quality inference, which further increased patronize intention. However, negative affect did not show a significant impact on service quality inference, but only on patronize intention. Conclusions: This study attempted to investigate the influence of SST system by extending the traditional S-O-R model. This study classified the SST system as functional environmental stimulus of retail stores and analyzed the effect of stimulus on consumers' internal and external responses. The results of this study showed that the introduction of innovative SST can serve as an effective store differentiation strategy in an increasingly competitive retail environment.
Technological advancements in information technology including RFID and mobile technologies have made it feasible to track the customers travel path in a store. The customer travel paths provide valuable implications to understanding the customer behaviors in a store. In our research, we develop a shopping path analysis system to track and analyze the customer travel path. The proposed system consists of RFID systems for collecting the customer paths and analysis system. The analysis system conducts clustering for identifying the distinctive shopping patterns, and analyzes the profile of a grocery, such as congestion rate, visiting rate, and staying time, etc. We show the applicability of our proposed system using the actual data obtained at a grocery in Seoul as a case study.

Despite of increasing studies for product recommendation, the recommendation of product repurchase timing has not yet been studied actively. This study aims to propose deep neural network models usingsimple purchase history data to predict the repurchase timing of each customer and compare performances of the models from the perspective of prediction quality, including expected ROI of promotion, variability of precision and recall, and diversity of target selection for promotion. As an experiment result, a recurrent neural network (RNN) model showed higher promotion ROI and the smaller variability compared to MLP and other models. The proposed model can be used to develop a CRM system that can offer SMS or app-based promotionsto the customer at the right time. This model can also be used to increase sales for product repurchase businesses by balancing the level of ordersas well as inducing repurchases by customers.
