  • A spacer grid assembly, which is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps and is welded at the intersections to form an egg crate structure, is one of the main structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly for pressurized water reactors(PWRs). The spacer grid assembly is structurally required to have enough buckling strength under various kinds of lateral loads acting on the nuclear fuel assembly so as to keep the nuclear fuel assembly straight. And also, the spacer grid assembly is hydraulically required to have less hydraulic resistance of coolant. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to weld the welding parts carefully and precisely. In this study, weld qualities such as, weld bead size and spatter manufactured by various welders were compared and analyzed. And performance parameters such as impact strength of spacer grid and hydraulic resistance of coolant were also compared and analyzed. Comparison results show that the weld qualities could be improved by selecting the optimal welding condition and also improving the welding technique.

  • Recent events in the nuclear industry have resulted in a movement towards increased seismic and LOCA excitations and requirements that challenge current fuel designs. AREVA NP's GAIA fuel design introduces unique and robust characteristics to resist the effects of seismic and LOCA excitations. For demanding seismic and LOCA scenarios, fuel assembly spacer grids can undergo plastic deformations. These plastic deformations must not prohibit the complete insertion of the control rod assemblies and the cooling of the fuel rods after the accident. The specific structure of the GAIA spacer grid produces a unique and stable compressive deformation mode which maintains the regular array of the fuel rods and guide tubes. The stability of the spacer grid allows it to absorb a significant amount of energy without a loss of load-carrying capacity. The GAIA-specific grid behavior is in contrast to the typical spacer grid, which is characterized by a buckling instability. The increased mechanical robustness of the GAIA spacer grid is advantageous in meeting the increased seismic and LOCA loadings and the associated safety requirements. The unique GAIA spacer grid behavior will be incorporated into AREVA NP's licensed methodologies to take full benefit of the increased mechanical robustness.

  • In the past, the progressive collapse resulting from local failures during accidents has caused many tragedies and loss of life. Although long-span spatial grid structures are characterised by a high degree of static indeterminacy, the sudden failure of key members may lead to a catastrophic progressive collapse. For this reason, it is especially necessary to research the progressive collapse resistance capacity of long-span spatial grid structures. This paper presents an evaluation method of important members and a novel dynamic analysis method for simulating the progressive collapse of long-span spatial grid structures. Engineering cases were analysed to validate these proposed method. These proposed methods were eventually implemented in the progressive collapse analysis of the main stadium for the Universiade Sports Center. The roof of the structure was concluded to have good resistance against progressive collapse. The novel methods provide results close to practice and are especially suitable for the progressive collapse analysis of long-span spatial grid structures.

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions smart objects collecting and sharing data at a massive scale via the Internet. One challenging issue is how to disseminate data to relevant data consuming objects efficiently. In such a massive IoT network, Mission critical data dissemination imposes constraints on the message transfer delay between objects. Due to the low power and communication range of IoT objects, data is relayed over multi-hops before arriving at the destination. In this paper, we propose a quorum-based adaptive dissemination algorithm (QADA) for the critical data in the monitoring-based applications of massive IoTs. To design QADA, we first design a new stepped-triangular grid structures (sT-grid) that support data dissemination, then construct a triangular grid overlay in the fog layer on the lower IoT layer and propose the data dissemination algorithm of the publish/subscribe model that adaptively uses triangle grid (T-grid) and sT-grid quorums depending on the mission critical in the overlay constructed to disseminate the critical data, and evaluate its performance as an analytical model.

  • Because sensitive and private information should be exchanged between electric vehicles and a V2G service provider, reliable communication channel is essential to operate Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system which considers battery of electric vehicles as a factor of smart grid. The block chain is a platform for cryptocurrency transaction and fully distributed database system running by only equivalent node in the network without help of any central management or 3rd party. In this paper, the structure and operation method of the blockchain are investigated, and the application of the blockchain for the V2G system was also explained and analyzed.

  • Recently there are growing interests in calculating aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft configurations with structural deformation using the FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) system in which CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and CSD(Computational Structure Dynamics) modules are coupled. In this paper the FSI system comprised of CAD, CFD, CSD, VSI(Volume Spline Interpolation) and grid deformation modules was constructed in order to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of the deformed shape. In the process VSI and grid generation modules are developed to combine CSD and CFD routines and to regenerate the aerodynamic grids for the deformed shape, respectively. For the CFD and CSD analysis, commercial programs FLUENT and NASTRAN were used. As a test model, DLR-F4 wing configuration was chosen and its aerodynamic characteristics were calculated by applying the static FSI system. It was shown that lift and drag coefficients of the wing at mach number 0.75 are reduced to 20.26% and 18.5%, respectively, owing to the structural deformation.

  • According to developed distributed generators, Solid State Circuit Breaker(SSCB) is essential for high power quality of DC Grid. In this paper, a simple and new structure of DC SSCB with a fast circuit breaker and fault current limiter is proposed. It can help to choice low specification of elements because of the limiting of fault current and achieve economic efficiency for minimizing auxiliary SCRs. Also all of SCRs have little switching loss because they operate under ZVS and ZCS. Through simulations and experiments of short-circuit fault, the performance characteristic of proposed circuit is verified and a guideline is so suggested that the DC SSCB is applied for a different DC grid using formulas.

  • A novel three degrees of freedom sensing method utilizing binary grid pattern image and vision camera is presented. The binary grid pattern image is designed by Pseudo-Random Binary Arrays and referenced to encode in-plane position of a moving stage of the contact-free planar actuator. First, the yaw motion of the stage is detected using fast image processing and then the other planar positions, x and y, are decoded with a sequence of images. This method can be applied to the system that needs feedback of in-plane position, with advantages of a good accuracy and high resolution comparable with the encoder, a relatively compact structure, no friction, and a low cost. In this paper, all the procedures of the above sensing mechanism are described in detail, including simulation and experiment results.

  • This paper presents 3D numerical simulations of a Free Standing Hybrid Riser under Vortex Induced Vibration, with prescribed motion on the top to replace the motion of the buoyancy can. The model is calculated using a fully implicit discretization scheme. The flow field around the riser is computed by solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. The fluid domain is discretized using the overset grid approach. Grid points in near-wall regions of riser are of high resolution, while far field flow is in relatively coarse grid. Fluid-structure interaction is accomplished by communication between fluid solver and riser motion solver. Simulation is based on previous experimental data. Two cases are studied with different current speeds, where the motion of the buoyancy can is approximated to a 'banana' shape. A fully three-dimensional CFD approach for VIV simulation for a top side moving Riser has been presented. This paper also presents a simulation of a riser connected to a platform under harmonic regular waves.
