A grid-connected inverter can be used in grid-connected or stand-alone modes. Generally, a grid-connected inverter operates in a grid-connected mode, but the inverter operates in stand-alone mode if grid faults occur. In the stand-alone mode, the grid-connected inverter must supply electric power to a critical load that needs to receive stable power even though grid faults occur. Generally, three-phase loads are used as critical loads, but a single phase is configured in some cases. In these conditions, the critical load is required to unbalance the load power consumption, which makes the three-phase load voltage unbalancd. This unbalanced voltage problem can cause fatal problems to the three-phase critical loads, and thus must be addressed. Hence, this paper proposes an algorithm to solve this unbalanced voltage problem by the individual phase current control. The proposed method is verified using Psim simulation and experiments.
This paper suggests an automatic elliptic grid generation method that is well-suited for the numerical mapping of complex geometries which are easily obtained from general CAD programs. An LBLADI solver is used for the governing mapping equations to have the strong diagonal dominance. The full boundary control method is adopted to determine the control functions of the equations, which allows the control of the grid regarding spacing and angle control at all boundary surfaces. The solution method presented here provides the capability of mapping very complicated geometries by defining grid point locations only along the boundaries. In the automated elliptic grid generation procedure, it is showed that strong diagonal dominance is essential to achieve successful mapping irrespective of the initial grid condition provided. To demonstrate the robustness of this method, it is applied to the thermal flow like the natural convection between eccentric cylinders. The results agree well with others.
This paper presents an improved grid voltage control strategy for wind farms with doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) connected to distribution networks based on an analysis of the operation limits of DFIG systems. A modified reactive power limit calculation method in different operation states is proposed and a reactive power control strategy during grid voltage dips/rises is further discussed. A control strategy for compensating unbalanced grid voltage, based on DFIG systems, by injecting negative sequence current into the grid through the grid side converter (GSC) is proposed. In addition, the negative current limit of the GSC is discussed. The distribution principle of the negative sequence current among the different DFIG systems in a wind farm is also introduced. The validity of the proposed voltage control strategy is demonstrated by Matlab/Simulink simulations. It is shown that the stability of a wind farm and the power grid can be improved with the proposed strategy.
This paper proposes a virtual flux (VF) and positive-sequence power based control strategy to improve the performance of grid-interfaced three-phase voltage source converters against unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. By using a second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) based VF observer, the proposed strategy achieves an AC voltage sensorless and grid frequency adaptive control. Aiming to realize a balanced sinusoidal line current operation, the fundamental positive-sequence component based instantaneous power is utilized as the control variable. Moreover, the fundamental negative-sequence VF feedforward and the harmonic attenuation ability of a sequence component generator are employed to further enhance the unbalance regulation ability and the harmonic tolerance of line currents, respectively. Finally, the proposed scheme is completed by combining the foregoing two elements with a predictive direct power control (PDPC). In order to verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed SOGI-VFPDPC, the scenarios of unbalanced voltage dip, higher harmonic distortion and grid frequency deviation are investigated in simulation and experimental studies. The corresponding results demonstrate that the proposed strategy ensures a balanced sinusoidal line current operation with excellent steady-state and transient behaviors under general grid conditions.
The renewable energies such as photovoltaic power, wind power and biomass have grown to a greater extent as decarbonization techniques. The renewable energies are interconnected to power systems (or electrical grids) in order to increase benefits from economies of scale, and the extra attention is focused on the Grid Code. A grid code defines technical parameters that power plants must meet to ensure functions of power systems, and the grid code determined by considering power system characteristics is various across the country. Some TSO (Transmission System Operator) and ISO (Independent System Operator) have issued grid code for wind power and the special requirements for offshore wind farm. The main purpose of the above grid code is that wind farm in power systems has to act as the existing power plants. Therefore wind farm developer and wind turbine manufacturer have great difficulty in grasping and meeting grid code requirements. This paper presents the basic understanding for grid codes of developed countries in the wind power and trends of those technical requirements. Moreover, in grid code viewpoint, the active power control of wind power is also discussed in details.
The introduction of renewable energy sources into the AC grid can change and weaken the strength of the grid, which will in turn affect the stability and robustness of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind farm. When integrated with weak grids, the DFIG wind turbine with vector power control often suffers from poor performance and robustness, while the DFIG wind turbine with synchronized control provides better stability. This paper investigates the critical short circuit ratios of DFIG wind turbine with vector power control and synchronized control, to analyze the stability boundary of the DFIG wind turbine. Frequency domain methods based on sensitivity and complementary sensitivity of transfer matrix are used to investigate the stability boundary conditions. The critical capacity of DFIG wind farm with conventional vector power control at a certain point of common coupling (PCC) is obtained and is further increased by employing synchronized control properly. The stability boundary is validated by electromagnetic transient simulation of an offshore wind farm connected to a real regional grid.

Unbalanced and distorted grid voltages cause the grid side current of a current source PWM rectifier to be heavily distorted. They can also cause the DC-link current to fluctuate with a huge amplitude. In order to enhance the performance of a current-source PWM rectifier under unbalanced and harmonic grid voltage conditions, a mathematical model of a current-source PWM rectifier is established and a flexible multi-objective control strategy is proposed to control the DC-link current and grid-current. The fundamental positive/negative sequence, $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ order harmonic components of the grid voltage are first separated with the proposed control strategy. The grid current reference are optimized based on three objectives: 1) sinusoidal and symmetrical grid current, 2) sinusoidal grid current and elimination of the DC-current $2^{nd}$ order fluctuations, and 3) elimination of the DC-current $2^{nd}$ and $6^{th}$ order fluctuations. To avoid separation of the grid current components, a multi-frequency proportional-resonant controller is applied to control the fundamental positive/negative sequence, $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ order harmonic current. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of proposed control strategy.
In order to alleviate the negative impacts of harmonically distorted grid condition on grid-connect inverters, an optimal control design-based gain selection scheme of an LCL-filtered grid-connected inverter and its ability to compensate selective harmonics are presented in this paper. By incorporating resonant terms into the control structure in the state-space to provide infinity gain at selected frequencies, the proposed control offers an excellent steady-state response even under distorted grid voltage. The proposed control scheme is achieved by using a state feedback controller for stabilization purpose and by augmenting the resonant terms as well as intergral term into a control structure for reference tracking and harmonic compensation. Furthermore, the optimal linear quadratic control approach is adopted for choosing an optimal feedback gain to ensure an asymptotic stability of the whole system. A discrete-time full state observer is also introduced into the proposed control scheme for the purpose of reducing a total number of sensors used in the inverter system. The simulation results are given to prove the effectiveness and validity of the proposed control scheme.
