  • The attempt to distinguish between graphite and domestic anthracite was means, especially electric resistance. The specific resistance values of various coals and graphites were determined by Wheaston Bridge equipped with more finely adjustable slide wire. The result of graphite was in the below of 0.08 ohm-cm and that of anthracite has $10^{-1}{\sim}10^1$ohm-cm range.

  • A series of expanded graphites is prepared from graphite oxide by changing the heat-treatment temperature, and their lithiation/de-lithiation mechanism and rate performance are examined. A featureless sloping profile is observed in their charge-discharge voltage and dilatometry profiles, which is contrasted by the stepwise plateau-like profiles observed with the pristine graphite. With an increase in the heat-treatment temperature from $250^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$, the interlayer distance becomes smaller whereas the electric conductivity becomes larger, both of which are resulted from a removal of foreign atoms (mainly oxygen) from the interlayer gaps. The expanded graphite that is prepared by a heat-treatment at $450^{\circ}C$ delivers the best rate performance, which seems to be a trade-off between the $Li^+$ ion diffusivity that is affected by the interlayer distance and electrical conductivity.

  • Expanded graphite/carbon fiber hybrid conductive polymer composites were fabricated by the preform molding technique. The conductive fillers were mechanically mixed with a phenol resin to provide an electrical property to composites. The conductive filler loading was fixed at 60wt.% to accomplish a high electrical conductivity. Expanded graphites were excellent in forming a conductive networking by direct contacts between them while it was hard to get the high flexural strength over 40MPa with using only expanded graphite and phenol resin. In this study, carbon fibers were added in composites to compensate the weakened flexural strength. The effect of carbon fibers on the mechanical and electrical properties was examined according to the weight ratio of carbon fiber. As the carbon fiber ratio increased, the flexural strength increased until the carbon fiber ratio of 24wt.%, and then decreased afterward. The electrical conductivity gradually decreased as the increase of the carbon fiber ratio. This was attributed to the non-conducting regions generated among the carbon fibers and the reduction of the direct contact areas between expanded graphites.

  • The influence of different heat treatment conditions on microstructure, mechanical and fatigue properties of Spheroidal Graphite cast Iron with 0.4-0.6% Mn was investigated. 1) Maximum tensile strength was arrived by tempering at about $450^{\circ}C$after quenching. Tempering at higher than $600^{\circ}C$ was changed martensitic structure to ferritic structure and secondary graphites were precipitated. 2) The relationship between matrix hardness and total hardness of the specimens are as following. [HB]$T$=0.7[HB] [HB]$M$+35 Maximum tensile strength was arrived at the total hardness of HB400-450. 3) Endurance ratio decreases with increasing total hardness, and fatigue limits can be presumed from as following. $\sigmaf$=$\sigmat$

  • ZrO$_2$ coated flake graphite powders were prepared by the controlled hydrolysis of zirconium oxichloride. The stirring process plays an important role in the coating process. There are two types of coated ZrO$_2$ particles: (a)primary particles with few nm size were obtained by the direct formation of the shell by precipitation of the surface of the graphite and (b) Secondary particles of ZrO$_2$ with ∼0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ size were obtained by the independent formation of primary particles ZrO$_2$ and subsequent heterocoagulation at the graphites surface.

  • Up to now, only superficial studies on the combustion velocity of smokeless fuels have been reported, while it should be a basical factor on the utilization of low quality coals and some other smokeless solid fuels. It was, therefore, difficult to choose raw material coals in manufacturing gaseous fuels. With the intent to solve above problem, we have determined combustion velocity of domestic anthracites, graphites, coalites of lignite and cokes from Japanese bituminous coal. The results show that the cokes from Japanese bituminous coal which has been used as raw material in the manufacturing gaseous fuels such as water gas, or producer gas in Korea can be replaced by some sources of domestic anthracite or coalite of lignite.

  • Effects of the amount of flake type graphite, morphology and (V,Mo)carbides on the specific damping capacity of austenitic low thermal expansion cast irons were investigated. Specific damping capacity(SDC) of low thermal expansion cast irons increased with the increased amount of graphite. Specific damping capacity of low thermal expansion cast iron decreased with the increased Young's modulus. In the case of V and Mo addition, SDC decreased with the increased amount of carbides. Specific damping capacity increased about 2% by the movement of magenetic domains which appeared in ferromagnetic materials.

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of the output power and traverse speed of laser beam on the microstructures, hardness and fatigue resistance of the ductile iron surface-hardened by $CO_2$ laser defocussed beam. Optical micrographs have shown that with increasing the output power and decreasing the traverse speed, the martensite was coarsened and some retained austenite were appeared in ductile iron. The microstructures of hardening zone were composed of bull's eye and some nodular graphite dissolved structures by the effect of self quenching. Fatigue fracture characteristics of ductile iron have appeared in the high stress and low stress ranges. The fracture initiated at nodular graphites in the surface hardened layer due to the stress concentration caused by a notch effect. The interior graphite nodules were broken away or popped out during crack propagation. Fatigue test has shown that values of fatigue strength considerably increased with increasing output power at a given traverse speed.

  • We investigate the phase formation in the compound layer of cast irons during the gaseous nitrocarburising of four different cast irons, that contain different types of graphites in the shape and size. We examine the change in the surface roughness with the nitrocarburising time. The observation of cross-sectional microstructure and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the compound layer consists of single ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ phase and that its thickness increases in a parabolic manner with the treatment time. The surface roughness parameters, Rz and Ra increase with increasing treatment time. In other words, the roughness parameters increase as the thickness of compound layer increases. The parameters also depend on the shape and size of graphite in the individual cast irons.
