Asbestos is being replaced throughout the world among friction materials because of its carcinogenic nature. This has raised an important issue of heat dissipation in the non-asbestos brake pad materials being developed for automobiles etc. It has been found that two of the components i.e. carbon fibres as reinforcement and graphite powder as friction modifier, in the brake pad material, can playa vital role in this direction. The study reports the influence of these modifications on the thermal properties like coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity along with the mechanical properties of nonasbestos brake pad composite samples developed in the laboratory.
Lubrication and cooling characteristics are the most important factors of elevated temperature forging lubricants. Usually adopted lubricants in warm forging processes are graphite, synthetic and emulsion lubricants. Most widely and effectively applied lubricants are graphite lubricants, but these have a lot of problems like tool corrosion and dusty environment. In this research, boronite lubricant is considered, because it is able to substitute for graphite. Hot ring compression test, cooling test and mass production test are performed to check the validity of new lubrication pigment.

During the last half decade, chemically modified graphene (CMG) has been studied in the wide range of applications, such as polymer composites, energy-related materials, sensors, 'paper'-like materials, field-effect transistors (FET), inks, actuators, and biomedical applications due to its excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Chemical modification of graphene oxide, which is generated from graphite oxide, which is produced by simple oxidation of graphite, has been a promising route to achieve mass production of CMG platelets via their colloidal suspensions. Graphene oxide contains a range of reactive oxygen functional groups, which renders it a good candidate for use in the aforementioned applications (among others) through chemical functionalizations. In this presentation, I will discuss my recent research activities on the fundamental chemistry of graphite oxide, as well as novel applications based on CMGs. Topics will include the chemical structure of CMGs and colloidal suspensions of CMG platelets, as well as a wide variety of applications.

Ion beam sputtering (IBS) by collision of energetic ions at surfaces is one of the representative methods for physical self-assembly. It is in spotlight as an easy tool to make nano structures in various sizes and shapes by controlling physical variablesWe investigate nano patterning on graphite. We found well-ordered nano ripple patterns after sputtering under the oblique angle and mean wavelengths of these ripples could be controlled as ion fluence increases from sub-10 nm to 80 nm. Each nano ripple is terminated by nano buds, which look like a cotton bud. We also examined the formation of various patterns on graphite by sputtering during swinging the sample at a constant angular velocity that have been never reported.

Pulsed magnetron sputtering of graphite target was employed for deposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. Time-resolved probe measurements of magnetron discharge plasma have been performed. It was shown that the pulsed magnetron discharge plasma density ($∼10^{17}$$m^{-3}$ ) is close to that of vacuum arc cathode sputtering of graphite. Raman spectroscopy was sed to examine DLC films produced at low ( $U_{sub}$ / < 1 kV) pulsed bias voltages applied to the substrate. It has been shown that maximum content of diamond-like carbon in the coating (50-60%) is achieved at energy per deposited carbon atom of $E_{c}$ =100 eV. In spite of rather high percentage of $sp^3$-bonded carbon atoms and good scratch-resistance, the films showed poor adhesion because of absence of ion mixing between the film and the substrates. Electric breakdowns occurring during the deposition of the insulating DLC film also thought to decrease its adhesion.

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition on silicon substrates. a-C:H thin film was irradiated to a typical He-Cd laser to study its emitting properties. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity during the irradiation achieved a maximum value when 2,000 seconds elapsed. Fourier transform infrared measurement revealed a-C:H thin film suffered transformation from a polymer-like to graphite-like phase during laser irradiation. Thermal annealing was done at various temperatures, ranging from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$ in the atmosphere, to investigate structural changes in a-C:H film by heat generation during the emission. PL intensity of a-C:H thin film increased 1.5 times without apparent structural change, as annealing temperature increased up to $200^{\circ}C$. However, a-C:H film above $200^{\circ}C$ exhibited significant decrease of PL accompanying dehydrogenation. This led to a red shift of the PL peak.

Three point bending tests of single edge notched beam (SENB) specimens were carried out to evaluate the fracture behavior of the fine-grain isotropic nuclear grade graphite, IG-11. To measure the crack initiation point and the subsequent crack growth, the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method and a traveling microscope were used. The effects of test variables like initial crack length, specimen thickness, notch type and loading rate on the measured fracture toughness, $K_Q$, were investigated. Based on the test results, the ranges of the test variables to measure the reliable fracture toughness value were proposed. During the crack growth, the rising R-curve behavior was observed in IG-11 graphite when the superficial crack length measured on the specimen surface was used. The increase of crack growth resistance was discussed in terms of crack bridging, crack meandering, crack branching, microcracking and crack deflection, which increase the surface energy and friction force.
It is widely recognized that it is hard to prepare hydrophilic graphite nanoparticles because of their high crystallinity and inert characteristics. In this study, we successfully synthesized the hydrophilic graphite nanoparticles by using liquid phase pulsed laser ablation method which has been actively employed for the thin film deposition up to now. The obtained hydrophilic graphite showed an ultra-high dispersion stability in water, because the hydrophilic functional groups like carboxyl and carbonyl group was simultaneously introduced onto the graphite surface with the nanoparticle formation, as confirmed by FT-IR and zeta potential measurements. Finally, a markedly enhanced gas sensing ability for acetone was shown in comparison with the conventional carbon black for the carbon polymer composite sensor with polyethyleneglycol (PEG).

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films is a metastable form of amorphous carbon containing a significant fraction of Sp3 bond. DLC films have been characterized by a range of attractive mechanical, chemical, tribological, as well as optical and electrical properties. In this study DLC films were prepared by the RF magnetron sputter system on $SiO_2$ substrates using graphite target. The effects of the post annealing temperature on the Property variation of the DLC films were examined. The DLC films were annealed at temperatures ranging from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$ using rapid thermal process equipment in vacuum. The variation of electrical property and surface morphology as a function of annealing treatment was investigated by using a Hall Effect measurement and atomic force microscopy. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed a structural change in the DLC films.
