KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) fabricated MOX (Mixed Oxide) fuel pellets as a cooperation project with PSI (Paul Scherrer Institut) for an irradiation test in the Halden reactor. The MOX pellets were fitted into fuel rods that included instrumentation for measurement in IFE (Institutt for Energiteknikk). The fuel rods were assembled into the test rig and irradiated in the Halden reactor up to 50 MWd/kgHM. The irradiated fuel rods were transported to the IFE, where ceramography was carried out. The fuel rods were cut transversely at the relatively higher burn-up locations and then the radial cross sections were observed. Micrographs were analyzed using an image analysis program and grain sizes along the radial direction were measured by the linear intercept method. Radial cracks in the irradiated MOX were observed that were generally circumferentially closed at the pellet periphery and open in the hot central region. A circumferential crack was formed along the boundary between the dark central and the outer regions. The inner surface of the cladding was covered with an oxide layer. Pu-rich spots were observed in the outer region of the fuel pellets. The spots were surrounded by many small pores and contained some big pores inside. Metallic fission product precipitates were observed mainly in the central region and in the inside of the Pu spots. The average areal fractions of the metallic precipitates at the radial cross section were 0.41% for rod 6 and 0.32% for rod 3. In the periphery, pore density smaller than 2 ${\mu}m$ was higher than that of the other regions. The grain growth occurred from 10 ${\mu}m$ to 12 ${\mu}m$ in the central region of rod 6 during irradiation.
Although there has been no general agreement on the mechanism of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) as one of major degradation modes of Ni-base alloys in pressurized water reactors (PWR's), common postulation derived from previous studies is that the damage to the alloy substrate can be related to mass transport characteristics and/or repair properties of overlaid oxide film. Recently, it was shown that the oxide film structure and PWSCC initiation time as well as crack growth rate were systematically varied as a function of dissolved hydrogen concentration in high temperature water, supporting the postulation. In order to understand how the oxide film composition can vary with water chemistry, this study was conducted to characterize oxide films on Alloy 600 by an in-situ Raman spectroscopy. Based on both experimental and thermodynamic prediction results, Ni/NiO thermodynamic equilibrium condition was defined as a function of electrochemical potential and temperature. The results agree well with Attanasio et al.'s data by contact electrical resistance measurements. The anomalously high PWSCC growth rate consistently observed in the vicinity of Ni/NiO equilibrium is then attributed to weak thermodynamic stability of NiO. Redox-induced phase transition between Ni metal and NiO may undermine the integrity of NiO and enhance presumably the percolation of oxidizing environment through the oxide film, especially along grain boundaries. The redox-induced grain boundary oxide degradation mechanism has been postulated and will be tested by using the in-situ Raman facility.
Boron Phosphide films were deposited on(III) Si substrate at $650^{\circ}C$, by the reaction of $B_2H_6$ with $PH_3$ using CVD. $N_2$ was employed as carrier gas. The optimal gas rates were 20 ml/min for $B_2H_6$, 60 ml/min for $PH_3$ ml/min and $1{\ell}/min$ for $N_2$. The films were annealed for 1hour in $N_2$ ambient at $550^{\circ}C$ and measured. The measurement of AFM shows that the average surface roughness is each $10.108{\AA}$ and $29.626{\AA}$. So, we could know every commonplace thing. The measurement of XRD shows that the films have the preferred orientation of(1 0 1). From SEM images, we could see that Boron Phosphide is showed of a structure, which is grain size, which is grain boundary size. Also, the measurement of AES is shown the films have $B_{13}P_2$ Stoichiometry. From WDX See that ingredient is detected each Boron and Phosporus. So, we could see that deposited BP thin film. In this study, we obtained the BP thin film by deposited in atmosphere pressure, and known to applicate as microwave absorbtion material of BP thin film.
TiAl intermetallic compound was candidated for the application to the high temperature materials such as a gas turbine exhaust valve in the automobile. However, this material dose not have ductility allowing to machinability to product. To improve the ductility, many researches conduct alloy design and heat treatment methods. We observed that the microstructure of TiAl varied with Ni, Mn elements as well as a heat treatment condition. In the case of Ni element addition, the TiAlNi intermetallic compound was precipitated at the grain boundary. When the heat treatment temperature increased from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$, the TiAlNi intermetallic compound was uniformly dispersed on the matrix. In the case of Mn element addition, the mixed duplex structure of ${\gamma}$-TiAl and lamellar(TiAl/$Ti_3Al$) was obtained with $1250^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$ heat treatment for 1 hour. When the heat treatment temperature increased from $1250^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$, the lamellar domain of the duplex structure was transformed near-lamellar structure.

Co-Re alloy development is prompted by the search for new materials for future gas turbines which can be used at temperatures considerably higher than the present day single crystal Ni-based superalloys. The Co-Re based alloys are designed to have very high melting range. Although Co-alloys are used in gas turbine applications today, the Co-Re system was never exploited for structural applications and basic knowledge on the system is lacking. The alloy development strategy therefore is based on studying alloying additions on simple model alloy compositions of ternary and quaternary base. Various strengthening possibilities have been explored and precipitation hardening through fine dispersion of MC type carbides was found to be a promising route. In the early stages of the development we are mainly dealing with polycrystalline alloys and therefore the grain boundary embrittlement needed to be addressed and boron addition was considered for improving the ductility. In this paper recent results on the effect of boron on the strength and ductility and the stability of the fine structure of the strengthening TaC precipitates are presented. In the beginning the alloy development strategy is briefly discussed.
Silicides have been required to be below 40 nm-thick and to have low contact resistance without agglomeration at high silicidation temperature. We fabricated composite silicide layers on the wafers from Ni(20 nm)/Co(20 nm)/poly-Si(70 nm) structure by rapid thermal annealing of $700{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. The sheet resistance, surface composition, cross-sectional microstructure, and surface roughness were investigated by a four point probe, a X-ray diffractometer, an Auger electron spectroscopy, a field emission scanning electron microscope, and a scanning probe microscope, respectively. The sheet resistance increased abruptly while thickness decreased as silicidation temperature increased. We propose that the fast metal diffusion along the silicon grain boundary lead to the poly silicon mixing and inversion. Our results imply that we may consider the serious thermal instability in designing and process for the sub-0.1 um CMOS devices.
Thin film magnet was fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering using $Nd_13/(Fe.Co)_{70}B_{17}$ alloy target and magnetic properties were investigated according to sputtering conditions from the metallurgical point of view. we could obtain the best preferred orientation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase at substrate temperatures between $450^{\circ}C$ and $460^{\circ}C$ with the input power 150W, and thin films had the anisotropic magnetic properties. But, as the thickness of thin film increased, the c-axis orientation gradually tended to be disordered and magnetic properties also become isotropic. Just like Nd-Fe-B meltspun ribbon, the microstructure of thin film magnet was consisted of very find cell shaped $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase and the second phase along grain boundary. While, domain structure showed maze patterns whose magnetic easy axis was was perpendicular to film plane of thin film. It was concluded from these results that the perpendicualr anisotropy in magnetization was attributed to the perpendicular alignment of very find $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains in thin film.
A textured front surface is required in high efficiency silicon solar cells to reduce reflectance and to improve light trapping. Wet etching with alkaline solution is usually applied for mono crystalline silicon solar cells. However, alkali texturing method is not appropriate for multi-crystalline silicon wafers due to grain boundary of random crystallographic orientation. Accordingly, acid texturing method is generally used for multi-crystalline silicon wafers to reduce the surface reflectance. To reduce reflectivity of multi-crystalline silicon wafers, double texturing method with combination of acid and reactive ion etching is an attractive technical solution. In this paper, we have studied to optimize RIE condition by different RF power condition (100, 150, 200, 250, 300 W).
Four kinds of silicon nitride composites with tri-laminate structure were prepared by stacking tapes with aligned ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ whisker seeds. The composites were fabricated using a modified tape casting method for enhanced alignment of the whisker seeds. The relative densities of all four samples reached 99% at room temperature. The three-point flexural strengths of the samples according to the stacking sequences were measured at both room temperature and 1723 K. The high temperature strength of sample WWW was $457{\pm}14$ MPa. The fracture of sample WWW occurred mainly along the grain boundary. The room temperature strengths of samples OOO, OWO, WOW, and WWW were $430{\pm}32$ MPa, $470{\pm}19$ MPa, $700{\pm}14$MPa, and $940{\pm}14$ MPa, respectively.
