광대역 광원을 이용한 혈중 산소포화도의 측정 시스템 및 랩뷰 프로그램 (Measurement of Blood Oxygen Saturation System and LavVIEW Program Using Broad-band Light Source)

  • Blood oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) is so important to be called bio-signal of the fifth. The measurement of blood oxygen saturation based on broad-ban light source has advantages of simple testing facility and easy understanding. This paper proposes a LabVIEW program which measures blood oxygen saturation based on broad-band light source. It combines LabVIEW and MATLAB, utilizing different light absorptions of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin in the visual wavelength range of 450nm-750nm to determine blood oxygen saturation. In order to improve accuracy through reducing the impact of hand shaking, the probe is fixed to the motor stage and then move a constant distance between the probe and the sample to be measured. Experimental results show that the proposed method noticeably increases the accuracy and saves time compared with the conventional methods.

  • The enhancement of immunity for atopic dermatitis with application of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-loaded liposome was evaluated on NC/Nga mice. The EPA-loaded liposome was coated with thiol-chitosan. The liposomes were characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface zeta potential & particle size analyzer (Zeta-PSA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The loading efficiency of EPA in the liposome was about 4.7%. The particle size of the EPA-Ioaded liposome was about 230 nm. The values of Immunoglobulin E (IgE), interleukin-4 (IL-4), and tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$ (TNF-$\alpha$) were reduced significantly with application of the EPA-loaded liposome. The interferon-$\gamma$ (IFN-$\gamma$) value was increased with the application effect. It is concluded that EPA loaded liposome have immunity advancing effects in mouse model of atopic dermatitis.

AWS 풍황데이터를 이용한 강원풍력발전단지 연간에너지발전량 예측 (Prediction of Annual Energy Production of Gangwon Wind Farm using AWS Wind Data)

  • The wind data obtained from an AWS(Automated Weather Station) was used to predict the AEP(annual energy production) of Gangwon wind farm having a total capacity of 98 MWin Korea. A wind energy prediction program based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation was used. Predictions were made for three consecutive years starting from 2007 and the results were compared with the actual AEPs presented in the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) monitoring report of the wind farm. The results from the prediction program were close to the actual AEPs and the errors were within 7.8%.

노인의 건강기능식품 섭취 실태와 영양지수를 이용한 식사의 질 및 영양 평가 (Evaluation of Dietary Quality and Nutritional Status based on Nutrition Quotient and Health Functional Food Intake in the Korea Elderly)

  • This study aim to evaluate dietary quality and nutritional status according to the consumption of health functional food using Nutrition Quotient for Korean elderly (NQ-E) for 288 elderly people attending senior welfare centers in Gyeonggi-do. The questionnaire consisted of items about general information, health functional food, and Nutrition Quotient for Korean elderly (NQ-E). Chi-squared test, Fisher's exact tests, and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) were performed using the SAS program ver. 9.4. Among the male and female subjects, the female subjects consumed more health functional food. The results of the dietary quality and nutritional status difference according to the intake of health functional food showed significant differences only in the areas of variety and abstinence among nutrition quotient factors for men, while no significant differences were observed in any of the nutrition quotient factors for women. In conclusion, focused-nutrition education program and useful guideline is needed for promoting adequate consumption of health functional foods in elderly.

Monte Carlo-based identification of electron and proton edges for calibration of miniaturized tissue equivalent proportional counter

  • Miniaturized tissue equivalent proportional counters (mini-TEPCs) are proper for radiation dosimetry in medical application because the small size of the dosimeter could prevent pile-up effect under the high intensity of therapeutic beam. However, traditional methods of calibrating mini-TEPCs using internal alpha sources are not feasible due to their small size. In this study, we investigated the use of electron and proton edges on Monte Carlo-generated lineal energy spectra as markers for calibrating a 0.9 mm diameter and length mini-TEPC. Three possible markers for each spectrum were calculated and compared using different simulation tools. Our simulations showed that the electron edge markers were more consistent across different simulation tools than the proton edge markers, which showed greater variation due to differences in the microdosimetric spectra. In most cases, the second marker, yδδ, had the smallest uncertainty. Our findings suggest that the lineal energy spectra from mini-TEPCs can be calibrated using Monte Carlo simulations that closely resemble real-world detector and source geometries.

PROCESSING OF INTERSTELLAR DUST GRAINS IN GALAXIES

  • We have performed a systematic study of interstellar dust grains in various environments of galaxies. AKARI has revealed the detailed properties of dust grains not only in star-forming regions but also in regions not relevant to star formation, some of which are found not to follow our old empirical knowledge. Because of its unique capabilities, AKARI has provided new knowledge on the processing of large grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). For example, we detect PAHs from elliptical galaxies, which show unusual spectral features and spatial distributions, demonstrating importance of material processing in the interstellar space. We find that copious amounts of large grains and PAHs are flowing out of starburst galaxies by galactic superwinds, which are being shattered and destroyed in galactic haloes. We discover evidence for graphitization of carbonaceous grains near the center of our Galaxy, providing a clue to understanding the activity of the Galactic center. We review the results obtained from our AKARI program, focusing on the processing of carbonaceous grains in various environments of galaxies.

견갑골 골절 환자의 기능회복에 대한 추나 요법을 포함한 한방재활치료: 증례 보고 (The Clinical Effects of Korean Medicine Rehabilitation Including Chuna Manual Therapy on Scapular Fracture Patient's Functional Recovery: A Case Report)

  • To evaluate the effects of Korean medicine and Chuna treatment on patient with pain and limited range of motion (ROM) after scapular fracture. Patient was treated with Chuna manual therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacoacpuncture, cupping therapy and measured by ROM, visual analog scale (VAS), shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI), American shoulder elbow surgery scale (ASES), Korean shoulder score for instability (KSS). After the 3 weeks treatment, the patient's ROM, VAS, SPADI, ASES, KSS scores were improved. Rehabilitation program including Chuna manual therapy can be effectively used to improve scapular fracture patient's pain and symptom during rehabilitation period. Therefore it is recommended to use Chuna manual therapy for the improvement of movement and pain from fracture.

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Colorectal Cancer Screening in Korea, 2005-2015: After the Introduction of the National Cancer Screening Program

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate inequalities in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates in Korea and trends therein using the slope index of inequality (SII) and relative index of inequality (RII) across income and education groups. Materials and Methods: Data from the Korean National Cancer Screening Survey, an annually conducted, nationwide cross-sectional survey, were utilized. A total of 17174 men and women aged 50 to 74 years were included for analysis. Prior experience with CRC screening was defined as having either a fecal occult blood test within the past year or a lifetime colonoscopy. CRC screening rates and annual percentage changes (APCs) were evaluated. Then, SII and RII were calculated to assess inequality in CRC screening for each survey year. Results: CRC screening rates increased from 23.4% in 2005 to 50.9% in 2015 (APC, 7.8%; 95% CI, 6.0 to 9.6). Upward trends in CRC screening rates were observed for all age, education, and household income groups. Education inequalities were noted in 2009, 2014, and overall pooled estimates in both indices. Income inequalities were inconsistent among survey years, and overall estimates did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion: Education inequalities in CRC screening among men and women aged 50 to 74 years were observed in Korea. No apparent pattern, however, was found for income inequalities. Further studies are needed to thoroughly outline socio-economic inequalities in CRC screening.

Enhanced reutilization value of shrimp-shell waste via fed-batch biodegradation with higher production of reducing sugar, antioxidant, and DNA protective compounds

  • As a process for commercial application, production of reducing sugar, antioxidant, and DNA protective compounds from shrimp-shell powder was investigated in a fed-batch biodegradation using Bacillus cereus EW5. The fed-batch biodegradation was operated in a 5-L bioreactor for 96 h according to three times pulse-feeding strategy. On the basis of the equal working volume (3 L), the fed-batch biodegradation showed a better production of the target compounds than the batch biodegradation, with higher cell density and shortened biodegradation period. The maximum values of the target compounds were 0.297 mg/mL of reducing sugar, 92.35% DPPH radical scavenging activity, 98.16% ABTS radical scavenging activity, and 1.55 reducing power at $A_{700}$, which were approximately 12.1, 3.4, 5.2, and 8.4% enhanced, respectively, compared with those obtained from the batch biodegradation. The fed-batch culture supernatant also showed the enhanced DNA damage inhibition activity than the batch culture supernatant. As a result, the fed-batch biodegradation accompanied by high cell density could produce more useful compounds, enabling an increase in the reutilization value of shrimp-shell waste.

CDMA 휴대폰 사용시 말초 혈류량 및 심박수의 변화 분석 (Analysis of Peripheral Blood Flow and Heart Rate on CDMA Cellular Phone Exposure)

  • 우리 일상생활과 밀접한 CDMA 휴대폰의 사용인구가 급증하면서 최근 전 세계적으로 휴대폰 전자파의 유해성에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 GSM 및 기타 다른 통신방식을 대상으로 한 기존의 연구와 달리 CDMA 휴대폰을 사용할 때 방출되는 전자파가 인체의 심혈관계에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 청소년 집단(21명, 연령 $15.9{\pm}2.3$세)과 성인집단(21명, 연령 $25.9{\pm}5.6$세) 자원자를 대상으로 CDMA 휴대폰 사용 중의 말초 혈류량, 심박수 외에 혈압의 변화를 비 침습적으로 측정하였다. 청소년과 성인 간, 그리고 각 집단 내에서 휴대폰 전자파 노출에 따른 말초 혈류량, 맥박수 및 혈압의 변화를 통계적으로 분석한 결과, 청소년과 성인 모두 말초 혈류량, 맥박수 및 철압에 있어서 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 결론적으로 CDMA 휴대폰 전자파 노출은 인체의 심혈관계에 직접적인 영향을 미치지 않는다고 사료된다.
