  • This paper describes the implementation of the AVT(Automatic video Tracker) using ASIC. The basic tracking algorithm is based on the spatio-temporal gradient method, and adaptive window sizing, track state decision algorithm were also realized. Newly developed ASIC performs recursive image filtering, extraction of spatio-temporal gradient/gradient functions of image in field rate. Using the FPGA/ASIC, the tracker was simply realized in one board type which can be easily applied to various image system. We conformed ASIC operation by computer simulation and tested the system in real tracking situations. From the result, the system can track the moving target which has a velocity of 2-3 pixel/field and a size of varying from 2 to 128 pixes. Also fast refresh rateof motion estimation(60Hz) improves the characteristics of servoing system which forms feedback loop with the tracker.

  • We have designed a magnetic field gradient useful for cylindrical imaging in NMR-CT. The direc¬tion of the designed field is parallel to the axis and the gradient in the radial direction of cylindrical coordinate is monotonically increasing. The ratio of the gradient in the radial and axial direction is greater than 10 near the center of coordinate. This ratio depends on solenoid length, the number of reverse current turns at center, and the amount of the reverse current. We built a gradient coil based on the numerical simulation and tested the field generated by NMR-CT. The resulting image matches with the theoretical expectation within 10% error. Since the data acquisition time of 1-D imaging is significantly shorter than 2-D imaging, it becomes possible to image much more dynamic objects by the use of this gradient field.

  • In this paper, we propose new unsharp masking technique based on the multiscale gradient planes. The unsharp masking technique is implemented as a high-pass filter and improves the sharpness of degraded images. However, the conventional unsharp masking enhances the noise component simultaneously. To reduce the noise influence, we introduce the edge information from the difference of the gradient values between two consecutive scales of the multiscale gradient. The multiscale gradient indicates the presence of image edges as the ratio between the gradients between two different scales by its multiscale nature. The noise reduction of the proposed method does not depend on the variance of images and noises. In experiment, we demonstrate enhancement results for blurred noisy images and compare with the conventional cubic unsharp masking technique.

  • We proposed a novel preconditioner based PCG(Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient) method for super resolution image reconstruction. Compared with the conventional block circulant type preconditioner, the proposed preconditioner can be more effectively applied for objective functions that include roughness penalty functions. The effectiveness of the proposed method was shown by simulations and experiments.

  • Though the increment of using computer vision system in modern industry, there are lots of difficulties to measure precisely because of measurement error distortion phenomenon. Between these reasons, the distortion of edge is dominant reason which is occured by the blurred image. The blurred image is happened when camera can not discriminate its precise focus. To correct and generalize distortion phenomenon is imprrtant. Thus we must fix the discrimination criteria which is collected by image recognition of precise focus. The edge of image means discontinuous point of intensity, and the component of edge is discribed as high frequency component at special domain specturm of image. The good condition of focus means there are much high frequency energy in image. The method of discribing high frequency energy is gradient operater which determines the condition of focus.

  • In this paper, image filter optimization method based on common sub-expression elimination is proposed for low-power image feature extraction hardware design. Low power and high performance object recognition hardware is essential for industrial robot which is used for factory automation. However, low area Gaussian gradient filter hardware design is required for object recognition hardware. For the hardware complexity reduction, we adopt the symmetric characteristic of the filter coefficients using the transposed form FIR filter hardware architecture. The proposed hardware architecture can be implemented without degradation of the edge detection data quality since the proposed hardware is implemented with original Gaussian gradient filtering algorithm. The expremental result shows the 50% of multiplier savings compared with previous work.

  • It has been suggested that merging plays an important role in the formation and the evolution of early-type galaxies. Optical-NIR color gradients of early-type galaxies in high density environments are found to be less steep than those in low density environment, hinting frequent merger activities in early-type galaxies in high density environment. In order to confirm if the flat color gradient is the result of dry merger, we decided to look deeply to find merging features and get their relation with color gradient. We selected samples which show extreme values of optical-NIR color gradients based on the data of previous study, and observed them at Maidanak observatory 1.5m telescope with long exposure. After masking out overlaid sources, our analysis reveals that these galaxies do not have extreme color gradient values. High degree sky flat technique was used during observation to aid discovery of faint, extended features. However, flatness of detector (SNUCAM) was good enough, so we could not see any marked improvement in image quality compared to those using normal sky flats. Additionally we noticed a feature that looks like merging tidal tail in the CFHT archival image, but this does not show up on the image we obtained. This demonstrates that flatness and correct sky estimation is very important when we look for faint merging features. In future we plan to enlarge the number of the sample.

  • This paper describes an efficient framework for the extraction of a brain tumor from magnetic resonance (MR) images. Before the segmentation process, a median filter is used to filter the image. Then, the morphological gradient is computed and added to the filtered image for intensity enhancement. After the enhancement process, the thresholding value is calculated using the mean and the standard deviation of the image. This thresholding value is used to binarize the image followed by the morphological operations. Moreover, the combination of these morphological operations allows to compute the local thresholding image supported by a flood-fill algorithm and a pixel replacement process to extract the tumor from the brain. Thus, this framework provides a new source of evidence in the field of segmentation that the specialist can aggregate with the segmentation results in order to soften his/her own decision.

  • Aiming at the problem that the gradient-based edge detection operators are sensitive to the noise, causing the pseudo edges, a triqubit-state measurement-based edge detection algorithm is presented in this paper. Combing the image local and global structure information, the triqubit superposition states are used to represent the pixel features, so as to locate the image edge. Our algorithm consists of three steps. Firstly, the improved partial differential method is used to smooth the defect image. Secondly, the triqubit-state is characterized by three elements of the pixel saliency, edge statistical characteristics and gray scale contrast to achieve the defect image from the gray space to the quantum space mapping. Thirdly, the edge image is outputted according to the quantum measurement, local gradient maximization and neighborhood chain code searching. Compared with other methods, the simulation experiments indicate that our algorithm has less pseudo edges and higher edge detection accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic prostate segmentation technique using image intensity and gradient information. Our method is composed of four steps. First, rays at regular intervals are generated. To minimize the effect of noise, the start and end positions of the ray are calculated. Second, the profiles on each ray are sorted based on the gradient. And priorities are applied to the sorted gradient in the profile. Third, boundary points are extracted by using gradient priority and intensity distribution. Finally, to reduce the error, the extracted boundary points are corrected by using B-spline interpolation. For accuracy evaluation, the average distance differences and overlapping region ratio between results of manual and automatic segmentations are calculated. As the experimental results, the average distance difference error and standard deviation were 1.09mm $\pm0.20mm$. And the overlapping region ratio was 92%.
