This paper presents a conceptual design approach of air-cored synchronous machine with high temperature superconductor (HTS) field winding. With a given configuration of a target machine, boundary conditions are set in the cylindrical coordinate system and analytic field calculation is performed by solving a governing equation. To set proper boundary conditions, current distributions of the field winding and the armature winding are expressed by the Fourier expansion. Based on analytic magnetic field calculation results, key machine parameters are calculated: 1) inductance, 2) critical current of field winding, 3) weight, 4) HTS conductor consumption, and 5) efficiency. To investigate all potential design options, 6 sweeping parameters are determined to characterize the geometry of the machine and the parameter calculation process is performed for each design options. Among design options satisfying constraints including >80 % critical current margin and >95 % efficiency, in this paper, a first-cut design was selected in terms of overall machine weight and HTS conductor consumption to obtain a lightweight and economical design. The goal is to design a 5-MW machine by referring to the same capacity machine that was previously constructed by another group. Our design output is compared with finite element method (FEM) simulation to validate our design approach.

numerical model is developed to estimate gas flow in the landfill site. Darcy's law, the mass conservation law, and the ideal gas state equation are combined to compose the governing equation for the steady-state and transient-state gas flows. The finite element method (FEM) is used as the numerical solution scheme. Two-dimensional radial symmetric triangular ring element is used to discretize the simulation domain. The steady state model developed in this study is compared with AIRFLOW that is a commercial model developed by Hydrologic Inc. Mass balance test is performed on the transient gas flow simulation. The developed model is applied to analyze the gas extraction experiment performed by Daewoo Institute of Construction Technology at the Nanjido landfill in 1993. The developed model was registered at Korea Computer Program Protection Foundation.

This paper deals with the FE analysis for the free vibration of sloshing in horizontal cylindrical tank with baffles. We use Laplace equation based on potential theory as governing equation. This problem is solved by FEM using lineal isoparametric elements. We assume that the tank as well as baffles is rigid body and by separating nodes into two at the baffle location, baffle effect is obtained by separating nodes into two at the baffle location. For the calculation of natural frequencies and mode shapes, we introduce Lanczos transformation and Jacobi iteration methods. Numerical results of the first longitudinal and transverse modes, while comparing with literature cited, are very good. In order for the baffle effects on the free vibration of sloshing, various combinations of baffle parameters, which are location, inner diameter and number, are examined.
Concrete has higher vapor pressure than its surrounding ambient air immediately after placement. Moisture at concrete surface evaporates to the ambient air to adjust equilibrium of the vapor pressure between them. The moisture inside the concrete moves to the surface because the evaporation at the surface causes gradient of vapor pressure inside the concrete. Plastic cracking, degree of hydration, strength development, and others caused by velocity of the moisture movement significantly influences quality of concrete. In this paper, the moisture diffusivity of early-age concrete was back-calculated using governing equation of the moisture diffusion, and temperature and relative humidity of concrete measured in a laboratory. The moisture diffusivity of the concrete was modeled using the back-calculated moisture diffusivity. The relative humidity of the concrete calculated by finite element method (FEM) using the modeled moisture diffusivity as Input data coincided with the measured relative humidity well.

This manuscript tends to investigate influences of nanoscale and surface energy on a static bending and free vibration of piezoelectric perforated nanobeam structural element, for the first time. Nonlocal differential elasticity theory of Eringen is manipulated to depict the long-range atoms interactions, by imposing length scale parameter. Surface energy dominated in nanoscale structure, is included in the proposed model by using Gurtin-Murdoch model. The coupling effect between nonlocal elasticity and surface energy is included in the proposed model. Constitutive and governing equations of nonlocal-surface perforated Euler-Bernoulli nanobeam are derived by Hamilton's principle. The distribution of electric potential for the piezoelectric nanobeam model is assumed to vary as a combination of a cosine and linear variation, which satisfies the Maxwell's equation. The proposed model is solved numerically by using the finite-element method (FEM). The present model is validated by comparing the obtained results with previously published works. The detailed parametric study is presented to examine effects of the number of holes, perforation size, nonlocal parameter, surface energy, boundary conditions, and external electric voltage on the electro-mechanical behaviors of piezoelectric perforated nanobeams. It is found that the effect of surface stresses becomes more significant as the thickness decreases in the range of nanometers. The effect of number of holes becomes significant in the region 0.2 ≤ α ≤ 0.8. The current model can be used in design of perforated nano-electro-mechanical systems (PNEMS).
Hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) is one of the most complicated problem in welding. Huge amount of studies have been done for decades. Based on them, various standards have been established to avoid HAC. But it is still a chronic problem in industrial field. It is well known that the main causes of the hydrogen crack are residual stress, crack susceptible micro structures and a certain critical level of hydrogen concentration. Even though the exact generating mechanism is unclear till today, it has been reported that the hydrogen level in the weld metal should be managed less than a certain amount to prevent it. Matsuda studied that the residual hydrogen level in the weld metal can be varied even if the initial hydrogen content is same. It is also insisted in this report that the residual hydrogen concentration is in stronger correlation with hydrogen crack than the initial hydrogen content. But, in practical point of view, the residual hydrogen is still hard to consider because measuring hydrogen level is time and cost consuming process. In this regard, numerical analysis is the only solution for considering the residual hydrogen content. Meanwhile, Takahashi showed the possibility of predicting the residual hydrogen by a rigorous FE analysis. But, few commercial software suitable for solving the weld metal hydrogen has been reported yet. In this study, two dimensional thermal - hydrogen coupled analysis was developed by using the commercial FE software MARC. Since the governing equation of the hydrogen diffusion is similar to the heat transfer, it is shown that the heat transfer FE analysis in association with hydrogen diffusion property can be used for hydrogen diffusion analysis. A series of simulation was performed to verify the accuracy of the model. For BOP (Bead-On-Plate) and the multi-pass butt welding simulations, remaining hydrogen contents in the weld metal is well matched with measurements which are referred from Kim and Masamitsu.

In this paper the signal analysis of eddy current test using transmit-receive(T/R) pancake coil of ECT array probe using electromagnetic finite element method(FEM) is performed. For characteristics analysis, the notch defect is used. The depth of defect is 40[%] of steam generator tube thickness, and inside defect and outside defect are used as simulation examples. The signal analysis is performed according to the variation of receive coil position. The receive coil is positioned $0[^{\circ}]$, $30[^{\circ}]$, $60[^{\circ}]$, $90[^{\circ}]$ of circumferential position of transmit coil. To obtain e electromagnetic characteristics of robes, the governing equation is derived from Maxwell's equations, and the problem is solved using the 3-dimensional finite element method. The signal magnitude of inside defect is bigger than that of outside defect, and the signal difference can be seen according to the variation of position of receive coil. The experimental signal and numerical signal of ASME standard tube show similar results. The results in this paper can be helpful when the ECT signals from ECT array probe are evaluated and analyzed.

CFT column has a lot of structural advantages due to the composite behavior between in-filled concrete and steel tube. This paper deals with the development of an effective numerical model which can consider the bond-slip behavior between both components of concrete matrix and steel tube without taking double nodes. Since the applied axial load to in-filled concrete matrix is delivered to steel tube by the confinement effect and the friction, the governing equation related to the slip behavior can be constructed on the basis of the force equilibrium and the compatability conditions. In advance, the force and displacement relations between adjacent two nodes make it possible to express the slip behavior with the concrete nodes only. This model results in significant savings in the numerical modeling of CFT columns to take into account the effect of bond-slip. Finally, correlation studies between numerical results and experimental data are conducted to verifying the efficiency of the introduced numerical model.
An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.
