  • Geometry is one of the important parts of Chinese school mathematics. There is a large difference in teaching and contents (standards, curriculum) between the US and China. Many mathematics educators in both countries are trying to reform the instruction of geometry and have made some progress. Close attention has been given to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM 2000), in which we have found many good ideas. In this paper, we introduce new developments of school geometry in China and have made some comparisons between the US and China. The new technology is becoming popular step by step in Chinese high schools. We believe we should learn from each other and exchange the ideas. In doing this mathematics teaching will be improved.

  • On the standards or elements of teaching evaluation, the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE) has carried out several research as follows : 1) establishment of observation elements for selecting examples of good mathematics instruction between 2001 and 2002, 2) development of the standards on teaching evaluation between 2004 and 2006, and 3) investigation on the elements of Pedagogical Content Knowledge including understanding of learners between 2007 and 2008. The purposes of development of mathematics teaching evaluation standards through those studies were to improve not only mathematics teachers' professionalism but also their own teaching methods or strategies. In this study, the standards were revised and modified by analyzing the results of those three studies (namely, evaluation standards) focused on the teacher knowledge of learners' understanding. For this purpose, the meaning of learners' understanding was also investigated in-depth. Finally, the concrete elements on teaching evaluation focused on the teacher knowledge of learners' understanding in math class were new developed, based on the literature reviews on learners' understanding. Then, those evaluation elements were developed according to the five domains of learners' understanding such as evaluation domains such as students' intellectual and achievement level, students' misconception in math, students' motivation on learning, students' attitude on mathematics learning, and students' learning strategies.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine what teaching behavior would have a good effect on learners in lecture-style instruction in the department of dental hygiene. Methods : The subjects in this study were 650 students who were in the three-year department of dental hygiene at four colleges in Gyeonggi Province and Chungcheong Province. After a survey was conducted, frequency analysis and ANOVA were utilized to analyze the collected data. The findings of the study were as follows. Results : The students put the highest value on knowledge among the factors of teaching behavior irrespective of their academic year, academic standing and learning style, followed by skills and attitude. Out of every subfactor, they set the highest value on a sense of humor regardless of their academic year, academic standing and learning style, and put the lowest value on the attitude factor such as enthusiasm. There were differences among the students in evaluation of the factors of teaching behavior according to academic year, and the students whose academic year was higher set a higher value on the factors of teaching behavior. There were no differences according to their academic standing and learning style. Conclusions : The dental hygiene students viewed the knowledge factor as the effective factor of teaching behavior, and regarded a sense of humor as the best subfactor. Although the attitude factor like enthusiasm is important, it seemed that the students hoped for the kind of instruction that would be delightful, intriguing and clearly convey what to learn.

  • Cooperative program planning and teaching is a strategy for developing and implementing resource based learning. This approach combines the classroom teacher's subject expertise and knowledge of the students with the teacherlibrarian's specialized knowledge of the availability and use of learning materials. And the purpose of cooperative program planning is to develop learning experiences or units of study that effectively integrate the student's resource center activities with other learning experiences. There are also some conditions that are conducive to effective planning sessions. First, the teacher-librarian must be prepared to initiate planning with teachers, rather than waiting for teachers to come to them. Second, the teacher-librarian must be prepared to present suggestions in such a way that the teacher can respond. The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate the planning process of cooperative program planning and teaching in the previous studies and (2) to find general problems when the cooperative program planning and teaching apply in actual situation. For these purposes, I chose a school library and a teacher-librarian in Seoul to observe how this cooperative program planning and teaching carry out in the school library. Main findings are summarized as follows: (1) A teacher who teaches alone for one grade is more proper to carry out the cooperative program planning and teaching. Young teachers are usually more active to change their teaching methods. (2) The cooperative program planning and teaching is a program what needs a lot of materials. When there is no right reference book in a school library, it would be good to access DB through PC telecommunication. It is also possile to contact lirarians who work in large public libraries or university libraries. (3) The cooerative program planning and teaching needs cooperative working between a teacher-librarian and a teacher. Thus a teacher-librarian should be in his school in the day time like the other teachers for the program's planning process. ( 4) There has to be a guide to change into resource based learning in teaching method. Thus the Korean Library Association or Korean Library and Information Science Society should offer a seminar or a workshop about cooperative program planning and teaching for the teacher-librarians. (5) It needs a system that a teacher-librarian can know about student's assignments so that he can prepare reference books for them. (6) The school library can be able to offer excellent service like cooperative program planning and teaching to the teachers and students according to a teacher-librarian's enthusiasm.

  • This study investigates Korean university students' perception of TOEIC courses taught by Korean and native English teachers and test results in an effort to identify better methodologies to teach TOEIC. To find out the student's perceptions of TOEIC classes, a survey was conducted. The one hundred sixty students who attended the TOEIC courses participated in a questionnaire survey at the end of the semester. Based on a survey of students' assumptions toward TOEIC classes and teachers, this paper discusses the skills students feel important to improve their TOEIC scores and what their actual scores show. The research questions were: 1) what are some of the benefits of having a Korean or native English teacher for TOEIC courses? 2) what are some of the drawbacks of having a Korean or native English teacher for TOEIC courses? The results indicated that Korean and native English teachers have an equal chance to become successful teachers, but the methods used by the two groups are not the same in the context of teaching TOEIC courses; in the short term, direct test preparation, dictation and repetition by Korean or native teachers might be good methods for TOEIC courses, however, in the long term, conversation and discussion performed by native teachers may affect scores in a positive way.
