The Townsend to glow discharge mode transition was investigated in the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) helium plasma source which was powered by 20 kHz / $4.5 kV_{rms}$ high voltage at atmospheric pressure. The spatial profile of the electric field strength at each modes was measured by using the intensity ratio method of two helium emission lines (667.8 nm ($3^1D{\rightarrow}2^1P$) and 728.1 nm ($3^1S{\rightarrow}2^1P$)) and the Stark effect. ICCD images were analyzed with consideration for the electric field property. The Townsend discharge (TD) mode at the initial stage of breakdown has the light emission region located in the vicinity of the anode. The electric field of the light emitting region is close to the applied field in the system. Immediately, the light emitting region moves to the cathode and the discharge transits to the glow discharge (GD) mode. This mode transition can be understood with the ionization wave propagation. The electric field of the emitting region of GD near cathode is higher than that of TD near anode because of the cathode fall formation. This observation may apply to designing a DBD process system and to analysis of the process treatment results.
The distinguishing characteristic of the glow discharge is that chemical reaction induced by partially ionized gases are limited only to the substrate surface. Most studies have been done on the plasma etching and polymerization. The graft polymerization in vapour phase by cold plasma has been rarely investigated. In this study the system of tub3ar reaction chamber with capacitively coupled electrode of alternative current of 60 Hz was employed for the graft polymerization. The graft polymerization of Acylic Acid(AA) onto the poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was carried out by treatment of PET film and fabric by cold plasma (glow discharge of argon gas), followed by the supply of AA vapour. The graft yield was about 1 wt%. The surface property was determined by contact angle, the surface tension was evaluated by zisman’s plot and equation of surface tension mesurement. The results were as follows: 1. In order to obtain lower contact angle, it was effective to avoid the vicinity of electrodes for a setting position of substrate. 2. Contact angle affected on the monomer pressure and its duration of exposure to the acid vapour. 3. Polymer radical formation was influenced by the changes of the value of current density and plasma treatment time. 4. Total surface tension of plasma grafted PET film increased. With an increase in the carboxylic acid content, the dispersion force decreased, while, the polar force and hydrogen bonding force increased. 5. The contact angle decreased from $75^\circ$ to around $30^\circ$ by plasma grafting. There was no ageing effect on the contact angle after 4 months.
Plasma processing is an essential process for pattern etching and thin film deposition in nanoscale semiconductor device fabrication. It is necessary to maintain plasma chamber in steady-state in production. In this study, we determined plasma chamber state with residual gas analysis with self-plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Residual gas monitoring of fluorocarbon plasma etching chamber was performed with self-plasma optical emission spectroscopy (SPOES) and various chemical elements was identified with a SPOES system which is composed of small inductive coupled plasma chamber for glow discharge and optical emission spectroscopy monitoring system for measuring optical emission. This work demonstrates that chamber state can be monitored with SPOES and this technique can potentially help maintenance in production lines.
Nowadays, many configurations and applications of small atmospheric plasma source have been investigated with growing interest, as it provides the bacteria inactivation, the surface modification and removal of unwanted small regions, and so on. In this paper, the non-thermal micro plasma source under atmospheric pressure by means of submicrosecond pulse voltage waveforms is suggested. Plasma operates in helium is appears as a small (sub-mm) glow at the tip of a plasma gun. Electrical measurements show that the plasma source operates at low voltage (about 500V) and the power consumption is about 1W at 25kHz. Moreover, the emission spectrum shows the relatively higher emission intensity of oxygen particles than those of helium and nitrogen.
Wool, silk and nylon 6 fabrics were treated with low-temperature plasma under atmospheric pressure of acetone/argon or helium/argon for 30 and 180 sec, and then dyed with leveling type acid dye, C.I. Acid Red 18 and milling type acid dye, C.I. Acid Blue 83. In spite of short time of the plasma treatment for thirty seconds, the color depth of wool fabrics was increased remarkably with both of the plasma gases, aceton/argon or helium/argon and with the kinds of dyes i.e., levelin type or milling type. But the atmosperic low-temperature plasmas did not increase the depth of silk and nylon 6 fabrics dyed with both of the acid dyes regardless of the teated time and plasma gases. It seems that low-temperature plasma by atmospheric-pressure discharge is effective for improvement of dyeing of wools as is the same way with the low-temperature plasma by glow discharge. The kinds of plasma gases and treated time did not influnce the depth of wool fabric pretreted with the atmosperic low-temperature plasmas.
In this study we attempted to diagnose the distribution of nitrogen plasma density generated using PECVD(plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition). The distribution of plasma density formed in a PECVD chamber were measured by DLP2000. The experiment results showed that the plasma density is related to RF power and gas flow rate. As RF power gets higher, the plasma density linearly increased. And the experimental results revealed that a pressure in chamber affects plasma density.
Polyacrylontrile fiber was modified with argon low temperature plasma by RF glow discharge at 240 mTorr, 40 W to investigate the surface morphological changes and mechanical characteristics such as elongation, tenacity, and modulus. Analysis of the SEM images revealed that the plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the surfaces rendering a severe crack formation. The morphological changes were evident with short treatment time of argon plasma although longer treatment time damaged the surface more severely. The mechanical characteristics such as tenacity and elongation were deteriorated due to the plasma treatment. The tenacity of the fiber treated with argon-plasma for 5 min showed a decreased value up to 21.9 % when compared to the untreated fiber. While the corresponding initial modulus(0 - 1 %) increased markedly up to 44.3 %.
Plasma in liquid phase has attracted great attention in the last few years by the wide domain of applications in material processing, decomposition of organic and inorganic chemical compounds and sterilization of water. The plasma in liquid is characterized by three main regions which interact each - other during the plasma operation: the liquid phase, which supply the plasma gas phase with various chemical compounds and ions, the plasma in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure and the interface between these two regions. The most complex region, but extremely interesting from the fundamental, chemical and physical processes which occur here, is the boundary between the liquid phase and the plasma gas phase. In our laboratory, plasma in liquid which behaves as a glow discharge type, is generated by using a bipolar pulsed power supply, with variable pulse width, in the range of 0.5~10 ${\mu}s$ and 10 to 30 kHz repetition rate. Plasma in water and other different solutions was characterized by electrical and optical measurements. Strong emissions of OH and H radicals dominate the optical spectra. Generally water with 500 ${\mu}S/cm$ conductivity has a breakdown voltage around 2 kV, depending on the pulse width and the repetition rate of the power supply. The characteristics of the plasma initiated in ultrapure water between pairs of different materials used for electrodes (W and Ta) were investigated by the time-resolved optical emission and the broad-band absorption spectroscopy. The deexcitation processes of the reactive species formed in the water plasma depend on the electrode material, but have been independent on the polarity of the applied voltage pulses. Recently, Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy method was employed to investigate the chemistry in the liquid phase and at the interface between the gas and the liquid phases of the solution plasma system. The use of the solution plasma allows rapid fabrication of the metal nanoparticles without being necessary the addition of different reducing agents, because plasma in the liquid phase provides a reaction field with a highly excited energy radicals. We successfully synthesized gold nanoparticles using a glow discharge in aqueous solution. Nanoparticles with an average size of less than 10 nm were obtained using chlorauric acid solutions as the metal source. Carbon/Pt hybrid nanostructures have been obtained by treating carbon balls, synthesized in a CVD chamber, with hexachloro- platinum acid in a solution plasma system. The solution plasma was successfully used to remove the template remained after the mesoporous silica synthesis. Surface functionalization of the carbon structures and the silica surface with different chemical groups and nanoparticles, was also performed by processing these materials in the liquid plasma.

Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were exposed to He/$O_2$ atmospheric pressure glow discharge plasma. Surface chemical analysis and contact angle measurement revealed the surface oxidation by formation of new functional groups after plasma treatment. Weight loss (%) measurement and scanning electron microscopy analysis showed a significant plasma etching effect. It was investigated in low-stress mechanical properties of the fabrics using Kawabata Evaluation System (KES-FB). The surface morphology change by plasma treatment increased surface friction due to an enhancement of fiber-to-fiber friction, resulting in change of other low-stress mechanical properties of fabric.
PET fabric was grafted with $CF_4$ or $C_2F_6$ plasmas generated by glow discharge. The water repellency of plasma-treated fabrics were evaluated with contact angle meter. The change in surface morphologies was observed by SEM, and the change of surface chemical characteristics were analyzed by FT-IR, ESCA and microchemical analysis technique. The results obtained are as follows : 1) The contact angle of plasma-treated fabric was over $150^\circ{C}$. 2) It was observed by SEM that the surface of treated substrate was over coated with thin film formed by the fluorocarbon plasma treatment. 3) According to ESCA analysis, there were prevailing -CHF-, $-CF_2$- and a little $-CF_3$ components on fluorocarbon plasma treated substrate. -CHF- and $-CF_2$- components were reduced by washing, and $-CF_2$- component was recovered by heat treatment. 4) In consideration of quantitative analysis of fluorine and F/C ratio by ESCA, we found that fluorination reached to the inner of substrate.
