  • In MEMS devices, packaging induced stress or stress induced structure deformation become increasing concerns since it directly affects the performance of the device. In this paper, deformation behavior of MEMS gyroscope package subjected to temperature change is investigated using high-sensitivity moire interferometry. Using the real-time moire setup, fringe patterns are recorded and analyzed at several temperatures. Temperature dependent analyses of warpages and extensions/contractions of the package are presented. Linear elastic behavior is documented in the temperature region of room temperature to $125^{\circ}C$. Analysis of the package reveals that global bending occurs due to the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient between the chip, the molding compound and the PCB. Detailed global and local deformations of the package by temperature change are investigated, concerning the variation of natural frequency of MEMS gyro chip.

  • Because of their high out-of-plane and in-planes strength, trapezoidally corrugated plates have been increasingly used in buildings and bridges. If corrugated plates are used as the web of plate girders or prestressed concrete box girders, the flanges take most of the bending stress. On the other hand, the corrugated plate web supports shear stress due to the accordion effect. The corrugated plate web could fail by three different buckling modes: global, local, or interactive shear buckling. To determine the effects of geometric parameters on the buckling capacity of the corrugated plates, a parametric study was performed using finite dement method. The analysis results showed that the buckling capacity and modes depend on individual parameters as well as combinations of parameters.

  • Particles reinforced MMCs have higher specific modulus, higher specific strength, better properties at elevated temperatures and better wear resistance than monolithic metals. But the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of Al6061 is 5 times larger than that of SiCp. The discrepancy of CTE makes some residual stresses inside of MMCs. This work investigates Si$C_p$/Al6061 composites at high temperatures in the microscopic view by three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses and compares the analytical results with the experimental ones. The theoretical model is not able to consider the nonuniform shape of particle. So the shape of particle is assumed to be perfect global shape. And also particle distribution is not homogeneous in experimental specimen. It is assumed to be homogeneous in simulation model. The type of particle distribution is face-centered cubic array(FCC array). Furthermore, non-homogeneous distribution is modeled by combination of several volume fractions.

  • Equations have been derived for computing electromagnetic forces by using the Continuum Design Sensitivity Analysis based on the Continuum Mechanics and the Virtual Work Principle. The resultant expressions have similar terms relating to the Korteweg-Holmholz force density, Maxwell Stress Tensor and Magnetic Charge Method but numerical implementation of the proposed scheme leads to efficient calculation and improved accuracy. In addition, the method can be easily applied to computing the magnetic force distribution as well as the global force. Results show the aforementioned advantages in comparison with the conventional methods.

  • Implementation of openings in beams web has been introduced as an innovative method for improving seismic performance of steel moment frames. In this paper, several steel moment frames have been studied in order to evaluate the effect of openings in beams web. The beam sections with web opening have been modeled as a simplified super-element to be used in designing frames and to determine opening configurations. Finite element models of designed frames were generated and nonlinear static pushover analysis was conducted. The efficient location for openings along the beam length was discovered and the effects of beams with web openings on local and global behavioral characteristics of frames were discussed. Base on the results, seismic performance of steel moment frames was improved by creating openings in beams web, in terms of reduction in stress level of frame sensitive areas such as beam to column connections and panel zones.

  • This study deals with the finite element analysis of the monotonic behavior of reinforced concrete beams and beam-column joint subassemblages. It is assumed that the behavior of these members can be discribed by a plane stress field. Concrete and reinforcing steel are represented by separate material models which are combined together with a model of the interaction between reinforcing bar and concrete through bond-slip to discribe the behavior of the composite reinforced concrete material. To discribe the concrete behavior, a nonlinear orthotropic model is adopted and the crack is discribed by a system of orthogonal cracks, which are rotating as the principal strain directions are changed. A smeared finite element model based on the fracture mechanics principles are used to overcome the numerical defect according to the finite element mesh size. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results and several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to estabilish the validity of the proposed model and identify the significance of various effects on the local and global response of reinforced concrete members.

  • A study on the behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete deep beams with and without web openings is carried out using nonlinear finite element analysis. Eight node isoparametric plane stress elements are employed to model the fibre reinforced concrete materials. Steel bars are treated using a compatible three node truss elements. The constitutive equations for fibre reinforced concrete materials take into account the softening effect of co-existing shear strains. Element stiffness at each step is formulated based on the tangent modulus at the current level of principal strains. Transformation between principal directions and global coordinate system is imposed. Comparison of analytical results with experimental values indicates reasonably good agreement. The proposed numerical model can be used to study the behaviour of this composite structures of practically any geometries.

  • The rail/wheel rolling contact affects the microstructure in the surface layer of rail. Recently. continuum damage mechanics allows us to describe the microprocesses involved during the straining of materials and structures at the macroscale. Elastic and plastic strains. the corresponding hardening effects are generally accepted to be represented by global continuum variables. The purpose of continuum damage mechanics is to introduce the possibility of describing the coupling effects between damage processes and the stress-strain behavior of materials. In this study. the continuum damage mechanics caused by elastic deformation was briefly introduced and applied to the fatigue damage of the rails under the condition of cyclic loading. The material parameter for damage analysis was first determined so that it could reproduce the life span under the compressive loading in the vicinity of fatigue limit. Some numerical studies have been conducted to show the validity of the present computational mechanics analysis.

  • The elastic analysis of floor slabs using the p-version of finite element method encounters stress singularities at certain types of reentrant corners, openings and cut-outs. Results obtained using the computer code based on C$\^$o/-hierarchic plate element formulated by Reissner-Mindlin theory are compared with theoretical predictions and with computational results reported in the literature. The convergence rate of h-, p- and hp-version can be estimated on the basis of the energy norm in global sense. If accuracy in terns of the number of degrees-of-freedom is used as a criterion, the solutions presented here are the most efficient that have been published up to date. Examples are the rhombic plate with the obtuse angle of 150o and the square plate with cut-outs.
