  • Co-digesting molasses wastewater and sewage sludge was evaluated for hydrogen production by response surface methodology (RSM). Batch experiments in accordance with various dilution ratios (40- to 5-fold) and waste mixing composition ratios (100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0:100, on a volume basis) were conducted. Volatile solid (VS) concentration strongly affected the hydrogen production rate and yield compared with the waste mixing ratio. The specific hydrogen production rate was predicted to be optimal when the VS concentration ranged from 10 to 12 g/l at all the mixing ratios of molasses wastewater and sewage sludge. A hydrogen yield of over 50 ml $H_2/gVS_{removed}$ was obtained from mixed waste of 10% sewage sludge and 10 g/l VS (about 10-fold dilution ratio). The optimal chemical oxygen demand/total nitrogen ratio for co-digesting molasses wastewater and sewage sludge was between 250 and 300 with a hydrogen yield above 20 ml $H_2/gVS_{removed}$.

  • A flow field in a passage with periodically converging-diverging cross-section is investigated experimentally by PIV measurement. A tube with a sinusoidally wavy cross section is one of several devices employed for enhancing the heat and mass transfer efficiency due to turbulence promotion and unsteady vortical motion. While the numerical flow visualization results have been limited to the fully developed cases, existing experimental results of this flow were simple qualitative ones by smoke or dye streak test. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to produce quantitative flow data for fully developed and transient flow regime by the Correlation Based Correction PIV (CBC PIV) and to conjecture the analogy between flow characteristics and heat transfer enhancement with low pumping power. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the onset position of the transition and the global mixing, which results in transfer enhancement. At Re=2000, evidences of the global mixing are captured at 2.5 wavy module through the variation of RMS values and instantaneous velocity plot.

  • Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAWC), which is located in Anmyeondo and, belongs to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), measures sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_6$) in every hour since 2007. In this study, $SF_6$ observed in 2007 are discussed. A gas chromatograph-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) with pre-cooled device is applied during the observation, and produced data are qualified by means of periodic calibration with $SF_6$ standard gas made by Korea Research Institute of Standard and Science (KRISS). $SF_6$ has been greatly paid attention since Kyoto protocol because of its high global warming potential(GWP) with 22,200 times of $CO_2$ in the period of 100 years. It is a man-made compound and has been usually used for gas insulation since 1970s and for etching process in the information technology-based industry since 1990. Average mixing ratio of $SF_6$ in 2007 was 6.65 pmol/mol at Anmyeondo. According to the GAW report published in 2008, average mixing ratio of $SF_6$ in the atmosphere is continuously growing. At present, the average mixing ratio of $SF_6$ in the atmosphere is known to be approximately 6.25 pmol/mol at global observatory. $SF_6$ value in Anmyeondo shows 0.40 pmol/mol greater than that of the Mauna Loa observatory in 2007.

  • Two measures of distributive mixing are examined: the standard deviation $\sigma$ and the maximum error E, among average concentrations of finite-sized samples. Curves of E versus sample size L are easily interpreted in terms of the size and intensity of the worst flaw in the mixture. E(L) is sensitive to the size of this flaw, regardless of the overall size of the mixture. The measures are used to study distributive mixing for time-periodic flows in a rectangular cavity, using the mapping method. Globally chaotic flows display a well-defined asymptotic behavior: E and $\sigma$ decrease exponentially with time, and the curves of E(L) and $\sigma$ (L) achieve a self-similar shape. This behavior is independent of the initial configuration of the fluids. Flows with large islands do not show self-similarity, and the final mixing result is strongly dependent on the initial fluid configuration.

  • The ozone concentration measured by HALOE (Ver 19) from Oct. 1991 to Dec. 2003 is used for analyzing the variation of ozone concentration. The HALOE loaded in UARS is observing several gases in the atmosphere, from 10km to 80km. Fourier analysis of these data in the middle latitude northern hemisphere is reported in this paper. To detect any possible long term trends, the fourier transformed time series was back transformed after removing signals with time periods of less than 6 months. Although the results clearly show the strong annual cycle, it is difficult to show any long term trends from the fourier series. We also compared the ozone volume mixing ratio's from HALOE with that from the ground-based radiometry to evaluate the accuracy of microwave observation at Sookmyung Women's University.

  • The mixing of fuel and oxidizer and each mass distribution of unlike split triplet(F-O-O-F) injector for liquid rocket which are known to affect the combustion efficiency significantly, has been investigated using PLLIF technique. Experiment is conducted to investigate the effect of mixture ratio(MiR), momentum ratio(MoR) and impinging angle on mixing efficiency. The mixing efficiency, which is introduced by Rupe, gives the global chracteristic of spray mixing. Experiment far comparison with triplet injector(F-O-F), which has same momentum ratio and impinging angle with split triplet injector is conducted.

  • To accurately extract absolute distance information from a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signal, in this paper we propose an approach based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm instead of frequency estimation for absolute distance. The algorithm is utilized to search for the global minimum of the fitness function that is established from the self-mixing signal to find out the actual distance. A resolution superior to $25{\mu}m$ in the range from 3 to 20 cm is obtained by experimental measurement, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach in comparison with interpolated FFT. The influence of different external feedback strength parameters and different inertia weights in the algorithm is discussed as well.

  • An experimental study is presented for a flow field in a two dimensional wavy channels by PIV. This flow has two major applications such as a blood flow simulation and the enhancement of heat transfer in a heat exchanger. While the numerical flow visualization results have been limited to the fully developed cases, existing experimental results of this flow were simple qualitative ones by smoke or dye streak test. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to produce quantitative flow data for fully developed and developing flow regimes by the Correlation Based Correction PIV (CBC PIV) and to conjecture the analogy between flow characteristics and heat transfer enhancement with low pumping power. • Measurements of global emissions, flame radiation and flame dimensions are presented for unconfined turbulent-jet and precessing-jet diffusion flames. Precessing jet flames are characterised by increases in global flame radiation and global flame residence time for methane and propane fuels, however a strong dependency of the NOx emission indices on the fuel type exists. The fuel type dependence is considered to be because soot radiation is more effective than gas-radiation at reducing global flame temperatures relative to adiabatic flame temperatures and reducing the NO production rate.

  • Graphene oxide (GO) was concurrently reduced and functionalized using long alkyl chain dodecyl amine (DA). The DA functionalized GO (DA-G) was assumed to disperse homogenously in linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Subsequently, DA-G was used to fabricate DA-G/LLDPE composites by melt mixing technique. Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis was performed to ascertain the simultaneous reduction and functionlization of GO. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to ensure the homogenous distribution and dispersion of DA-G in LLDPE matrix. The enhanced storage modulus value of the composites validates the homogenous dispersion of DA-G and its good interfacial interaction with LLDPE matrix. An increased in tensile strength value by ~ 64% also confirms the generation of good interface between the two constituents, through which efficient load transfer is possible. However, no significant improvement in glass transition temperature was observed. This simple technique of fabricating LLDPE composites following industrially viable melt mixing procedure could be realizable to developed mechanically strong graphene based LLDPE composites for future applications.
