  • Ceramic core processing technology using 5-axis high-speed cutting machine is applied to make the glass molds for aspherical ophthalmic lenses. In the technology, optimum processing conditions for aspherical ceramic molds are based on minimal experimental data of surface roughness. Such surface roughness is influenced by fabricating tools, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut, respectively. In this paper, we present that surface roughness and shape accuracy of aspheric ceramic mold obtained by optimum processing conditions are Pa $0.6184{\mu}m$ and Pt $5.0301{\mu}m$, respectively, and propose that these values are sufficiently possible to apply to making the glass molds for aspherical ophthalmic lenses.

  • Recently, due to the development of MEMS technology, researches for the production of effective micro structures and shapes have been actively conducted. However, the process technology based on chemical etching has a number of problems such as environmental pollution and time problems due to multi-process. Various processes to cope with this process are being studied, and one of the mechanical etching processes is the powder blasting process. This process is a method of spraying fine particles, which has the advantage of being an effective process in manufacturing hard brittle materials. However, it is also a process that adversely affects the material surface roughness and material properties due to the impact of the injection of fine particles. In this study, after fabricating micro-channels in fused silica glass with excellent optical properties among the hard brittle materials, we used the nano indentation system to analyze the micro parts using nano-particles as well as machinability and surface roughness analysis of the processed surface. The analysis was performed for the effective processing of powder blasting.

  • This paper describes the forming conditions of smart-phone curved glass using the glass molding system with force applying system. The force applying system is composed of a body, a motor and gear, a rectilinear movement structure, a force sensor, a LVDT sensor (Linear Variable Differential Transformer), a up and down moving block, and so on. The glass molding system for characteristic test to find the forming conditions consists of the force applying system and a chamber, a metallic mold, a upper heater, a lower heater and so on. The characteristic test for forming conditions of smart-phone curved glass was carried out at forming temperature $620^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ using the glass molding system. As a result of the characteristic test, the forming conditions of curved glass could be found, and it is thought that the conditions can be used to apply to the system for producing in large quantities.

  • Existing composite forming processes such as the autoclave, prepreg compression forming (PCF), RTM, etc. require high production costs because of their long processing time. On the other hand, microwave heating process (MHP) can reduce the production costs since both mold and composite material can be heated directly. The aim of this study is to manufacture a mold consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), quartz glass, stainless steel clamps, and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) bolts for fabricating FML based on self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP) using the MHP. First, the flame test was carried out prior to the MHP to check the temperature on the mold and whether the spark occurred at the mold and the edge of the FML. Second, the uniaxial tensile test was then conducted to obtain the mechanical properties of the FML manufactured by the MHP. The mechanical properties were compared with those of the FML fabricated by the PCF. As a result, the MHP using the PTFE mold can manufacture the FML more rapidly than the PCF, and obtain acceptable mechanical properties.

  • Hot embossing is to fabricate desired pattern on the polymer substrate by pressing the patterned mold against the substrate which is heated above the glass transition temperature, and it is a high throughput fabrication method for bio chip, optical microstructure, etc. due to the simultaneous large area patterning. However, the bad pattern fidelity in large area patterning is one of the obstacles to applying the hot embossing technology for mass production. In the present study, PDMS pad was used as a cushion on the backside of the micro-patterned 4 inch Si mold to improve the pattern fidelity over the 4 inch PMMA sheet by increasing the conformal contact between the Si mold and the PMMA sheet. The pattern replicability improvement over 4 inch wafer scale was evaluated by comparing the replicated pattern height and depth for PDMS-cushioned Si mold against the rigid Si mold without PDMS cushion.

  • In general, Light-hardening polymer was used UV nanoimprint technology. A light-hardening polymer was had the problem of poor hardness, durability. In order to overcome the problem of polymer, inter change optical glass. However glass is very manufacture and a lowering of standars transmittance. In order to glass recover was necessary polishing process. The process is magnetorheological fluids polishing. MR polishing has been developed as a new precision finishing technique to obtain a fine surface. Hence, Magnetorheological fluids has been used for micro polishing to get micro parts. This polishing process guarantees high polishing quality by controlling the fluid density electrically. The applied material in experiments is fused silica glass. Fused silica glass is widely used in the optical field because of high degree of purity. For MR polishing experiments, MR fluid was composed with DI-water, carbonyl iron and nano slurry ceria. The wheel speed and electric current were chosen as the variables for analyzing the characteristics of MR polishing process. Outstanding surface roughness of Ra=1.58nm was obtained on the fused silica glass specimen. And originally glass transmittance was recover on the fused silica glass.

  • The effect of alloy composition on the glass forming ability (GFA) of the Ca-rich Ca-Mg-Zn alloys has been investigated in $Ca_{65}Mg_{5+x}Zn_{30-x}$ and $Ca_{55+x}Mg_{15}Zn_{30-x}$ (x=0, 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys. In a wide composition range of 15-25% Zn and 10-20% Mg bulk metallic glass (BMG) samples with the diameter larger than 6 mm are fabricated by conventional copper mold casting method in air atmosphere. Among the alloys investigated, the $Ca_{65}Mg_{15}Zn_{20}$ alloy exhibits the highest GFA enabling to form BMG sample with the diameter of at least 15 mm. The crystalline phase formed during solidification of $Ca_{65}Mg_{15}Zn_{20}$ ($D_{max}=15\;mm$) could be identified as a mixture of $Ca_3Zn$ and $CaMg_2$ cause by the redistribution of the constituent elements on long-range scale. The compressive fracture strength and fracture elongation of the $Ca_{65}Mg_{15}Zn_{20}$ BMG are 602 MPa and 2.08% respectively. The ${\sigma}$ parameter which has been recently proposed for evaluating GFA exhibits better correlation with GFA of Ca-Mg-Zn alloys than other parameters suggested so far such as ${\Delta}T_x$, $T_{rg}$, K, ${\gamma}$, and ${\Delta}T^*$ parameters.

  • In this study, the aspherical lens for optical communications produced not with an one-step pneumatic type of external pressurization system (existed GMP process) but a constant weight of self-loaded mold put up to upper core. So the lens is molding with self-loaded weight molding and it calls Weight Molding process. In self-loaded molding process, we measured changes of center thickness molding lenses with each variable molding temperatures and time to find the effect of center of lens thickness to search key factors. As experimental results, the center thickness reach to targeted lenses step time value was changed drastically and it depends by molding temperature. If the molding temperature gets higher, the targeted lens that is reaching to the center thickness step time value was decreased. To find the effect of life improvement on mold core by imposing the self-loaded molding process we molded with GMP(Glass molding press) method and self-loaded molding method for 9,000 times and measured the lenses shape accuracy and surface roughness to evaluate the core life. As a result the self-loaded molding method core has 2,000 times longer that GMP (Glass molding press) method. If we adopt self-loaded molding method of the optical aspherical lens molding in the future, we expect that it would reduce the expense of changing the molds by molding core life improvements.

  • The refractive index is a key material-design parameter, especially for high-refractive-index glasses, which are used for precision optics and devices. Increased demand for high-precision optical lenses produced by the glass-mold-press (GMP) process has spurred extensive studies of proper glass materials. B2O3, SiO2, and multiple heavy-metal oxides such as Ta2O5, Nb2O5, La2O3, and Gd2O3 mostly compose the high-refractive-index glasses for GMP. However, due to many oxides including up to 10 components, it is hard to predict the refractivity solely from the composition of the glass. In this study, the refractive index of optical glasses based on the B2O3-La2O3-Ta2O5-SiO2 system is predicted using machine learning (ML) and compared to experimental data. A dataset comprising up to 271 glasses with 10 components is collected and used for training. Various ML algorithms (linear-regression, Bayesian-ridge-regression, nearest-neighbor, and random-forest models) are employed to train the data. Along with composition, the polarizability and density of the glasses are also considered independent parameters to predict the refractive index. After obtaining the best-fitting model by R2 value, the trained model is examined alongside the experimentally obtained refractive indices of B2O3-La2O3-Ta2O5-SiO2 quaternary glasses.

  • The feasibility of substituting a composite mold for an aluminum mold in the fabrication of a small ship propeller was investigated. A small three-blade aluminum propeller was used as a plug for manufacturing the composite mold. A GRPG composite mold and propeller were made from an unsaturated polyester resin, Epovia gelcoat, and woven and mat glass fibers using the compression and vacuum method at room temperature. The hardness and surface roughness and the strength and deformation of the compression and suction molds were experimentally determined. The results were compared with the ISO 484/2 standard and some aluminum alloy materials. The results showed that the deformation of the mold satisfied the tolerance of the thickness of the blade. Some characteristics of the GRPG composite mold were better than those of the aluminum alloy mold (surface smoothness, weight, performance, and cost), and some characteristics were similar (detachment ability and life-cycle). Therefore, the composite mold is considered suitable for the fabrication of a small composite ship propeller.
