The effects of sizing agent on the final mechanical properties of the glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composites were investigated by contact angle measurements at room temperature. In this work, glass fibers were coated by poly(vinyl alcohol), polyester, and epoxy type sizing agent and each property was compared. Contact angles of the sized glass fiber were measured by the wicking method based on Washburn equation using deionized water and diiodomethane as testing liquids. As an experimental result, the surface free energy calculated from contact angle showed the highest value in case of the glass fiber coated by epoxy sizing agent. From measurements of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and fracture toughness ( $K_{IC}$ ) of the composites, it was found that the sizing treatment on fibers could improve the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion, resulting in growing the final mechanical properties. This was due to the enhanced surface free energy of glass fibers in a composite system.

In accordance with the increased usage of reinforcing materials such as carbon fibers and glass fibers, delamination detection between concrete and the reinforcing material is needed as such delaminations may be a major cause for strength reduction or failure of a structure. In this work, 15 GHz center frequency with 10 GHz band width horn antenna was used to detect delamination between concrete and carbon fibers or glass fibers. The specimens measured $600\;(length)\;{\times}\;600\;(width)\;{\times}\;100\;(thickness)\;mm$, and glass fibers and carbon fibers with a thickness of 1.5 mm were attached on the specimens' surfaces using epoxy. In addition, artificial delaminations of size $50\;(length)\;{\times}\;50\;(width)\;mm$ were placed in the middle of the specimen with thickness of 2, 4, 6 mm respectively together with a 2 mm delamination projecting upwards from the surface of the concrete. Therefore a total of 8 specimens were used, 4 specimens for glass fiber reinforced concrete and 4 for carbon fiber reinforced concrete, containing delaminations as described above. The experiment results were derived by using the difference of area under the curved graph. According to experimental results artifical delaminations were identified in both fiber reinforced and carbon reinforced specimens and these results could contribute to further development of delamination detection technology.
In the era of building engineering the intensification of Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) is world-shattering magnetism. It has lot of rewards over ordinary concrete i.e., enrichment in production, cutback in manpower, brilliant retort to load and vibration along with improved durability. In the present study, the mechanical strength of CM-2 (SCC containing 10% of rice husk ash (RHA) as cement replacement and 600 grams of glass fibers per cubic meter) was investigated at various dosages of cement replacement by fly ash (FA) and GGBS. A total of 17 SCC mixtures including two control SCC mixtures (CM-1 and CM-2) were developed for investigating fresh and hardened properties in which, ten ternary cementitious blends of SCC by blending OPC+RHA+FA, OPC+RHA+GGBS and five quaternary cementitious blends (OPC+RHA+FA+GGBS) at different replacement dosages of FA and GGBS were developed with reference to CM-2. For constant water-cement ratio (0.42) and dosage of SP (2.5%), the addition of glass fibers (600 grams/m3) in CM-1 i.e., CM-2 shows lower workability but higher mechanical strength. While fly ash based ternary blends (OPC+RHA+FA) show better workability but lower mechanical strength as FA content increases in comparison to GGBS based ternary blends (OPC+RHA+GGBS) on increasing GGBS content. The pattern for mixtures appeared to exhibit higher workablity as that of the concentration of FA+GGBS rises in quaternary blends (OPC+RHA+FA+GGBS). A decrease in compressive strength at 7-days was noticed with an increase in the percentage of FA and GGBS as cement replacement in ternary and quaternary blended mixtures with respect to CM-2. The highest 28-days compressive strength (41.92 MPa) was observed for mix QM-3 and the lowest (33.18 MPa) for mix QM-5.

This study focused on the development of surface deformations of GFRP rebars with a better bond characteristic for reinforcing concrete, and simultaneously, of GFRP rebars with more simple and economic production process. This research paper describes a development and bond performance of GFRP rebar with molded deformations, which is composed of polymer resin and milled glass fiber. To determine proper mix ration of milled fibers, material test of hardened epoxy and pullout tests of GFRP rebar with various mix ratio were conducted. The test results indicate that the new strategy of using a mixture of epoxy resin and milled fiber could be successfully applied to a surface structure of GFRP rebar to enhance bond with concrete. The bearing resistance of the ribs was further enhanced by the milled fibers at mechanical and environmental loading state.
This study was carried out in order to find out the relationship between physical and chemical properties of silk fiber treated by concentrated calcium nitrate solution. The tensile, thermal and dynamic mechanical properties are also examined on Ca(NO3)2 treated silk fibers. The tensile properties of silk fibers treated by calcium nitrate changed with a concentration. The thermal behavior were also affected by the concentration of calcium nitrate. The degradation temperature (endotherms) and glass transition temperature shifted to lower temperature as the treated concentration increased. It is thought that the physical properties are strongly related to the structure and morphology of Ca(NO3)2 treated silk fibers. As a result, these give property changes with a concentration dependence.

The tribological properties of the aluminum short fiber and glass fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by vacuum hot pressing was studied. The effect of the composition and the relative density on the wear properties was examined by a reciprocal type tribo-test machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the microstructure of sintered specimen and worn surface observation using SEM and EDS. Addition of the fibers led to the wear resistance since the metal matrix was reinforced by the fibers. The reinforcement of the fiber seemed to be stronger as the distribution of the fibers was more uniform. Graphite also reduce the wear loss. The pores in the sintered composites seemed to play an important role to improve the wear resistance since the pores provide the places where the solid lubricants locate.

Recently, natural fibers draw much interests in composite industry due to low cost, light weight, and environment-friendly characteristics compared with glass fibers. In this study, mechanical properties were evaluated for two extreme cases of jute fiber orientations, i.e. the unidirectional yarn composites and the felt fabric composites. Samples of jute fiber composites were fabricated by RTM process using epoxy resin, and tensile, compression, and shear tests were conducted. As can be expected, unidirectional fiber specimens in longitudinal direction showed the highest strength and modulus. Compared with glass/epoxy composites of the similar fabric architecture and fiber volume fraction, the tensile strength and modulus of jute felt/epoxy composites reached only 40% and 50% levels. However, the specific tensile strength and modulus increased to 80% and 90% of the glass/epoxy composites. The main reason for the poor mechanical properties of jute composites is associated with the weak interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix. The effect of surface treatment of jute fibers on the interfacial bonding will be examined in the future work.

In this study, the channels-contained hybrid membranes have been fabricated through the incorporation of glass fibers and GO sheets (GO/glass fibers, GG), or a mixture of chitosan/GO (CS/GO/glass fibers, CGG), as hybrid membranes using in organic dye removal. The material properties are well investigated the terms in the morphological, chemical, crystal, and thermal characterizations for verifying interactions in their formed structure. These hybrid membranes have been fitted well in pseudo-second order and Langmuir models that are associated with chemical adsorption and a monolayer approach, respectively. The highest adsorption ability of methylene blue and methyl orange reached 59.40 mg/g and 229.07 mg/g (GG); and 287.47 mg/g and 252.91 mg/g (CGG), which is more enhanced than that of previous GO-based other adsorbents. Moreover, the dye separation on these membranes could be favorable to superb sealing and trapping dye molecules from water instead of only the dye connection occurring on their surface, regarding the physically sieving effect. The membranes can also be reused within two and three adsorbing-desorbing cycles on the GG and CGG ones, respectively. These membranes can become future adsorbents to be applied for wastewater treatment due to their structural features.
The purpose of this study is to improve the strength and thermal conductivity of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) by embedding various additives. Specimens were prepared using PBT pellets embedded with glass fibers (GF) and boron nitride (BN) powders. The test results showed that tensile strength decreased, and thermal conductivity increased with increasing BN contents. with thermal shock cycles conducted, unfilled PBT showed a considerable decrease in failure strain and strength, whereas strength and thermal conductivity of glass fiber and BN particle-embedded PBT had little differeces. With increasing BN, the thermal conductivity of PBT composites was highly improved.
This study successfully prepared high-porosity aluminosilicate fibrous porous ceramics through vacuum suction filtration using aluminosilicate fiber as the primary raw material and glass powder as binder, with the appropriate incorporation of glass fiber. The effects of the composition of raw materials and sintering process on the structure and properties of the material were studied. The results show that when the content of glass powder reached 20 wt% and the samples were sintered at the temperature of 1,000 ℃, strong bonds were formed between the binder phase and fibers, resulting in a compressive strength of 0.63 MPa. When the sintering temperatures were increased from 1,000 ℃ to 1,200, the open porosity of the samples decreased from 89.08 % to 82.38 %, while the linear shrinkage increased from 1.13 % to 10.17 %. Meanwhile, during the sintering process, a large amount of cristobalite and mullite were precipitated from the aluminosilicate fibers, which reduced the performance of the aluminosilicate fibers and hindered the comprehensive improvement in sample performance. Based on these conditions, after adding 30 wt% glass fiber and being sintered at 1,000 ℃, the sample exhibited higher compressive strength (1.34 MPa), higher open porosity (89.13 %), and lower linear shrinkage (5.26 %). The aluminosilicate fibrous porous ceramic samples exhibited excellent permeability performance due to their high porosity and interconnected three-dimensional pore structures. When the samples were filtered at a flow rate of 150 mL/min, the measured pressure drop and permeability were 0.56 KPa and 0.77 × 10-6 m2 respectively.
