The comprehensive understanding of the fiber reinforced polymer behavior requires the use of advanced non-destructive testing methods due to its heterogeneous microstructure and anisotropic mechanical proprieties. In addition, the material response under load is strongly associated with manufacturing defects (e.g., voids, inclusions, fiber misalignment, debonds, improper cure and delamination). Such imperfections and microstructures induce various damage mechanisms arising at different scales before macrocracks are formed. The origin of damage phenomena can only be fully understood with the access to underlying microstructural features. This makes X-ray Computed Tomography an appropriate imaging tool to capture changes in the bulk of fibrous materials. Moreover, Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) can be used to measure kinematic fields induced by various loading histories. The correlation technique relies on image contrast induced by microstructures. Fibrous composites can be reinforced by different fiber architectures that may lead to poor natural contrast. Hence, a priori analyses need to be performed to assess the corresponding DVC measurement uncertainties. This study aimed to evaluate measurement resolutions of global and regularized DVC for glass fiber reinforced polymers with different fiber architectures. The measurement uncertainties were evaluated with respect to element size and regularization lengths. Even though FE-based DVC could not reach the recommended displacement uncertainty with low spatial resolution, regularized DVC enabled for the use of fine meshes when applying appropriate regularization.

Waterborne polyurethane-acrylate(WPUA) dispersions were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization in a two-step process. In the first step, polytetrahydrofuran, isophorone diisocyanate, dimethylol proponic acid, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate were used to synthesize a vinyl-terminated polyurethane prepolymer. In the second step, styrene, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, and different multi-functional crosslinkers were copolymerized. 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate were used as the crosslinkers, and their effect on the mechanical and thermal properties of WPUA was investigated. Overall, as the number of functional groups of the cross-linker increased, the gel fraction improved to 79.26%, the particle size increased from 75.9 nm to 148.7 nm, and the tensile strength was improved from 5.86 MPa to 12.40 MPa. In thermal properties, the glass transition temperature and decomposition temperature increased by 9.9℃ and 18℃, respectively. The chemical structures of the WPUA dispersions were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The synthesized WPUA has high potential for applications such as coatings, leather coatings, adhesives, and wood finishing.
In this study, we investigate the liquid crystal (LC) alignment of LC cells created from plant-based polysaccharide derivatives, such as guar gum. Guar gum films exhibit satisfactorily high optical transparency in the visible light region (400-750 nm). For example, the transmittance of polyimide films, which are the most typically used LC alignment layers, is 87%, whereas that of guar gum films deposited onto a glass substrate at a wavelength of 550 nm is approximately 99%. The observed LC alignment depends on the rubbing depth. For example, an LC cell comprising a guar gum film fabricated via rubbing at rubbing depths of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mm exhibits a planar LC alignment, whereas it exhibits a vertical LC alignment at a rubbing depth of 0.5 mm. Additionally, the LC alignment is shown to be correlated with the total surface energy of the guar gum films. When the total surface energy of a rubbed guar gum film exceeds 58.10 mJ/m2, an LC cell comprising the guar gum film exhibits a stable and vertical LC alignment. Therefore, guar gum can be used to realize the vertical alignment system of LC via a simple adjustment of the rubbing depth.
The present study follows three main goals. First, an analytical solution with high accuracy is developed to assess the effects of embedding pre-strained shape memory alloy (SMA) wires on the critical buckling temperatures of rectangular sandwich plates made of soft core and graphite fiber/epoxy (GF/EP) face sheets based on piecewise low-order shear deformation theory (PLSDT) using Brinson's model. As the second goal, this study compares the effects of SMAs on the thermal buckling of sandwich plates with those of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The glass transition temperature is considered as a limiting factor. For each material, the effective ranges of operating temperature and thickness ratio are determined for real situations. The results indicate that depending on the geometric parameters and thermal conditions, one of the SMAs and CNTs may outperform the other. The third purpose is to study the thermal buckling of sandwich plates with advanced hybrid SMA/CNT/GF/EP composite face sheets. It is shown that in some circumstances, the co-incorporation of SMAs and CNTs leads to an astonishing enhancement in the critical buckling temperatures of sandwich plates.

This paper explains fire safety tests of a hybrid composite train carbody with carbon/epoxy sandwich bodyshell and stainless steel underframe. In this study, a large scale mock-up was used to evaluate the fire safety of the composite train carbody. The test was conducted to the bare composite carbody mock-up without interior facilities and the fully equipped one. Tile fire propagation and temperature distribution of the carbon/epoxy bodyshell and the glass phenol interior panels was evaluated under the real fire accident scenario. The test scenario was based on the DaeGu subway fire accident. From the tests, both the surface temperature of the interiors and the composite bodyshell wore lower than tile ignition temperature. In addition, the fire spread along the surface of the interiors and bodyshell was not occurred.
In this paper, quasi-static crushing tests of composite circular tubes under axial compression load are conducted to investigate the energy absorption characteristics. Circular tubes used for this experiment are glass/epoxy (GFRP) composite tubes which are fabricated by the filament winding method. One edge of the composite tube is chamfered to reduce the initial peak load and to prevent catastrophic failure during crushing process. Energy absorption characteristics vary significantly according to the constituent materials, fabrication conditions, tube geometry and test condition. In tube geometry, according as inner diameter increase, unstable crush mode is caused by local buckling of delamination, but control of the fiber orientation should help composite tubes get stable crush mode.
The main objective of this article is to investigate the response of different fiber metal laminates subjected to low velocity impact experimentally and numerically via finite element method (FEM). Hence, two different fiber metal laminate (FML) samples (GLARE/CARALL) are made of 7075-T6 aluminum sheets and polymeric composites reinforced by E-glass/carbon fibers. In order to study the responses to the low velocity impacts, samples are tested by drop weight machine. The projectiles are released from 1- and 1.5-meters height were the speed reaches to 4.42 and5.42 meter per second and the impact energies are measured as 6.7 and 10 Joules. In addition to experimental study, finite element simulation is done and results are compared. Finally, a detailed study on the maximum deflection, delamination and damages in laminates and geometry's effect of projectiles on the laminate response is done. Results show that maximum deflection caused by spherical projectile for GLARE samples is more apparent in comparison with the CARALL samples. Moreover, the maximum deflection of GLARE samples subjected to spherical projectile with 6.7 Joules impact energy, 127% increases in comparison with the CARALL samples in spite of different total thickness.

As regulations on greenhouse gas emission have strengthened globally, the demand for improved fuel efficiency in automobiles continues to rise. In response, the tire industry is actively conducting research to improve fuel efficiency by enhancing tire performance. In this study, silica-filled epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)/butadiene rubber (BR) blend compounds were manufactured according to ENR types and silica contents, and their physical properties and vulcanizate structure were evaluated. ENR-50, which has a higher epoxide content than ENR-25, exhibited stronger filler-rubber interaction, resulting in superior abrasion resistance. In addition, because of its high glass transition temperature (Tg), the wet grip performance of ENR-50 improved, even though the rolling resistance increased. Increasing the amount of silica had little effect on the abrasion resistance due to the increase in filler-rubber interaction and decrease in toughness. In addition, ENR-50 exhibited better wet grip performance; however, the rolling resistance increased. The results indicated that truck bus radial (TBR) tire tread compounds can be designed by applying ENR-50 to improve wear resistance and wet grip performance. In addition, by applying ENR-25 and reducing the silica contents improve fuel efficiency.
Thermotropic block copolyester(TLCP-b-PBN) based on poly(tetramethylene 2,6-(naphthaloyldioxy)dibenzoates)(TLCP) and poly(butylene 2,6-naphthalate)(PBN) was synthesized by solution polycondensation and melt-blended with poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate)(PEN) for in-situ composites. The TLCP domains showed nematic behavior in melt. The composition of block copolymer was determined from $^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy. The DSC thermogram of block copolymer revealed the presence of two major melting transitions, corresponding to the separete melting of PBN and TLCP domains. The glass transition temperature(Tg) of the PEN in the blends decreased with increasing the content of TLCP-b-PBN and the TLCP-b-PBN acted as a nucleating agent for the matrix polymers. In the 20% TLCP-b-PBN blend, well oriented TLCP fibriles were observed at temperature above the melting point of the PEN by optical microscopy. By scanning electron micrographs of cryogenically fractured surfaces of extruded blends, the TLCp domains were found to be finely and uniformely dispersed in 0.15 to $0.2{\mu}m$ size. Interfacial adhesion between the TLCP and matrix polymer was seemed to be good. Under certain condition TLCP formed a fiver structure in the PEN matrix, with thin oriented TLCP fibril in the skin region and spherical TLCP domains in the core.

This study was performed to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of seven commercially available light-cured cervical restorative materials one resin-modified glass-ionomer material(Fuji II LC) three polyacid-modified composites(Compoglass, Dyract, F2000), and three light-cured composites(Heliomolar, Palpique Estelite, UniFil F). All samples were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. 2.0N of weight was loaded during the test and the abraded surfaces were examined with profilometer and SEM after 100,000 cycles. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The highest hardness value of 79.7 was observed in the FT group and the lowest value of 20.0 was observed in the HM group. Results of Tukey test showed that an overall significant difference was indicated except the CG and DR groups(p<0.05). 2. The highest surface roughness was observed in the FL group and the lowest was observed in the UF group. Results of Tukey test showed the significant difference between the FL or FT and UF groups(p<0.05). 3. Statistically higher abrasion and surface roughness were observed for the dentifrice of paste type, Perio A+, than for that of gel paste type, Tom & Jerry. 4. The surface roughness values increased on the abraded surfaces because of the protrusion of filler particles due to selective removal of matrix resin.
