  • A series of fluorinated aromatic poly(hydroxyamide)s (PHAs) were synthesized by direct polycondensation of diacides containing 2,6-dimethylphenoxy group and quinoxaline ring in the main chain with 2,2-bis-(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane. The PHAs had relatively low inherent viscosities in the range of 0.35~0.43 dL/g at $35^{\circ}C$ in DMAc solution. All PHAs exhibited excellent solubility in aprotic solvents such as NMP, DMAc, DMF and DMSO as well as in common organic solvents such as pyridine, THF, and m-cresol at room temperature. However, the poly(benzoxazole)s (PBOs) were quite insoluble in all organic solvents except partially soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid. The PBOs showed glass transition temperatures between 233 and $284^{\circ}C$ by DSC and maximum weight loss temperatures in the range of $536-546^{\circ}C$ by TGA.

  • In order to discuss the freeze-thaw durability of FRC and mechanical properties by the fiber types of FRC, experimental studies of FRC were carried out. The kinds of fiber used which are in CFRC are PAN-based and Pitch-based carbon fiber and in GFRC are alkali-resistance glass fiber. To examine the effects of the kinds, types (continuous fiber and Tow, Belt, Cloth) and contents of fiber and matrices, the following three methods CFRC and GFRC, Air cured, Water cured and Autoclaved CFRC and GFRC were tested. According to the test results, the flexural, tensile strength and toughness of FRC were remarkably influenced by types of fiber and addition of condensed silica fume. Also, freeze-thaw resistance of FRC was considerably improved in comparision to conventional mortar.

  • In this paper, in order to improve the withstand voltage properties of epoxy resin, IPN(interpenetrating polymer network) method was introduced and the influence was investigated. The single network structure specimen(E series), simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network specimen(EM series) and pseudo interpenetrating polymer network(EMP series) specimen were manufactured. In order to understand the internal structure properties, scanning electron microscopy method was utilized, and glass transition temperature was measured. Also, AC voltage dielectric breakdown strength, tensile strength and impact strength were measured to investigate the influence upon electrical and mechanical properties. As a result, it was confirmed that simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network specimen was the most execellent.

  • Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.

  • In this paper compressive characteristics of composite egg-box panels were investigated and energy absorption was calculated from the nominal stress-strain relations obtained by the compressive tests. Several different stacking sequences and number of plies were introduced for investigation of static compression characteristics and the energy absorption rates of composite egg-box panels. The compressive stress-strain relation and energy absorption of various composite egg-box panels were compared with those of aluminium egg-box panels. From the test results it was found that the fracture behavior of composite egg-box panel was affected by stacking angle causing different local deformation, during lay-up and draping processes and types of prepreg; that is, plain weave carbon/epoxy and 4-harness satin glass/epoxy. The energy absorption capacity of composite egg-box panels were proved to be higher than that of aluminium egg-box panels with low mass.

  • This paper focuses on thermal properties of a newly prepared composite material by nano-silica and micro-silica mixture. Nano-silica and micro-silica mixture composites were made by dispersing surface treated nano-silica(average radius: 10 nm) and micro-size silica in epoxy resin. To investigate the effects of nano-silica and micro-size silica mixture(ENMC), the glass transition temperature (Tg), coefficients of thermal expansion(CTE) and elastic modulus of DMA properties by DSC, TMA and DMA devices were measured for the ENMC according to increase nano-silica addition contents and EMC. All properties of the neat epoxy were improved by the addition of micro-silica, which was improved much further by the addition of surface treated nano-silica to the EMC system.

  • Recently, the wide range of the composite materials is used for the making airplanes, trains and automobiles body for the lightweight. Despite having complex structures, composite materials usually have well defined mechanical characteristics. However, composite materials are difficult to understand the fracture mechanism clearly by simple mechanical test. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) combined with mechanical testing can play a more important role and especially Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) would become known to be a useful tool to assess damage and fracture behavior of composites. In this study The experiment was performed to acquire the acoustic emission signal during tensile test using unidirectional CFRP specimen and the data was analyzed the acoustic emission parameters with the waveform.

  • In this study, epoxy/mica composite was prepared by mixing with mechanical stirrer together with homogenizer, and the effect of amino-type silane coupling agent was also studied. To reduce the viscosity without any decrement of other properties, 1,4-Butanediol diglycidyl ether (1,4-BDGE) as an aliphatic epoxy reactive diluent was introduced to the epoxy/mica composite in order to use as vanish for high voltage motor and generator stator winding. It was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation that interfacial characteristics between organic epoxy and inorganic mica was modified by coupling agent treatment so that glass transition temperature increased, and tensile strength and electrical breakdown strength increased. The properties were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis and the ac electrical breakdown strength was 20.2% modified by treating silane coupling agent.

  • The paper presents the thermo-mechanically induced non-linear response of multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced laminated composite beam (MWCNTRCB) supported by elastic foundation using higher order shear deformation theory and von-Karman non-linear kinematics. The elastic properties of MWCNT reinforced composites are evaluated using Halpin-Tsai model by considering MWCNT reinforced polymer matrix as new matrix by dispersing in it and then reinforced with E-glass fiber in an orthotropic manner. The laminated beam is supported by Pasternak elastic foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. A generalized static analysis is formulated using finite element method (FEM) through principle of minimum potential energy approach.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different yarn twisting methods on physical properties. Plain single jersey structured fabrics were knitted from Kevlar yarn, and from Kevlar/HPPE, and from Kevlar/Basalt fiber, and from Kevlar/Glass fiber and Kevlar/Stainless steel fiber blended and core-spun yarns. and then, The fabrics were coated NBR Latex. The physical properties, including tear strength, modulus, degree of penetration, heat resistance, and cut resistance of the knitted fabrics were investigated and compared. Kevlar/HPPE blended yarn fabrics recorded the highest heat resistance (13 Sec.). and Kevlar/HPPE blended yarn fabrics had good cut resistance (Cut Level 4).
