This paper reported a study on the thermal, mechanical and electrical insulation properties of epoxy/mica composites. To investigate the effect of mica content, glass transition temperature, mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strength, and insulation breakdown properties for epoxy composites with various contents of mica. The effect of insulation thickness on insulation breakdown property was also studied. It was observed that tensile and flexural strength decreased with increasing mica content, while elastic modulus increased as the mica content increased. AC insulation breakdown strength for all epoxy/mica composites was higher than that of neat epoxy and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was 14.4% improved. As was expected, insulation breakdown strength at $30^{\circ}C$ was far higher than that at $130^{\circ}C$, and it was also found that insulation breakdown strength was inversely proportion to insulation thickness.
The changes of interfacial properties and microfailure degradation mechanisms of bioabsorbable composites with hydrolysis were investigated using micromechanical test and acoustic emission (AE). As hydrolysis time increased, the tensile strength, the modulus and the elongation of PEA and bioactive glass fibers decreased, whereas those of chitosan fiber changed little. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of bioactive glass fiber/poly-L-lactide (PLLA) composite was significantly higher than that two other systems. The decreasing rate of IFSS was the fastest in bioactive glass fiber/PLLA composite, whereas that of chitosan fiber/PLLA composite was the slowest. With increasing hydrolysis time, distribution of AE amplitude was narrow, and AE energy decreased gradually.
The effect of silicon carbide (SiC) and graphite fillers incorporation on the abrasive wear behaviour of glass-vinyl ester (G-V) composites have been investigated. The three-body abrasive wear behaviour was assessed by rubber wheel abrasion tests (RWAT). The worn surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of SiC and graphite fillers in G-V composite improves the abrasion resistance under different loads/abrading distances. The SEM studies indicate the reasons for failure of composites and influencing parameters.
This study concerns with the effect of fiber weight fraction on the fracture toughness of long glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene composites. Fracture tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens made of glass fiber polypropylene composites. Three fiber weight fractions of 20%, 30%, and 40% were used. Fracture toughness was determined from the compliance method. Results showed that compliance decreased with increasing fiber weight fraction while critical load increased with fiber weight fraction. Averaged fracture toughness increased 14% as fiber weight fraction increased from 20% to 40%.
The thermal shock resistance of cement composites with hollow glass microspheres (HGM) is investigated. Cement composites containing various concentrations of HGM are prepared and their properties studied. The density, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites decrease with increasing HGM concentration. A thermal shock test is performed by cycling between -60 and 50℃. After the thermal shock test, the compressive strength of the cement composite without HGM decreases by 28.4%, whereas the compressive strength of the cement composite with 30 wt% HGM decreases by 5.7%. This confirms that the thermal shock resistance of cement is improved by the incorporation of HGM. This effect is attributed to the reduction of the thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of the cement composite because of the incorporation of HGM, thereby reducing the occurrence of defects due to external temperature changes.
The purpose of this study was to process bio-active glass ceramic composite, reinforced with sapphire fibers, by hot press. Also to study the interface of the matrix and the sapphire fiber, and the mechanical properties. Glass raw materials melted in Pt crucible at 1300$^{\circ}C$ during 3.5 hours. The melt was crushed in ball mill and then crushed material, ground and sieved to $<40{\beta}{\mu}m$. Sapphire fibers cut (30mm) and aligned. Powder and fibers hot pressed. The micrographs show good bonding between the matrix and the fiber and no porosity in the glass matrix. This means ideal fracture phenomena. Glass is fractured before the fiber. This is indication of good fracture strength. EDXS showing aluminum rich phase and crystalline phase. Bright field image of the matrix showing crystalline phase. Also diffraction pattern of TEM showing the crystalline phase and more than one phase. Strength of the samples was determined by 3 point bend testing. Strength of the 10vol% sample was approximately 69MPa, while strength of the control sample is 35MPa. Conclusions through this study as follow: 1. Micrographs show no porosity in the glass matrix and the interface. 2. The interface between the fiber and the glass matrix show no gaps. 3. Fracture of the glass indicates characteristic fiber-matrix separation. 4. Presence of crystalline phase at high processing temperature. 5. Sapphire is compatible with bioactive glass.
The effet of glass fiber and graphite on the wear properies in tin-bronze alloy matrix composites was studied by a pin-on-disk type wear testing machine. The results obtained from the wear test were analized by SEM observations of worn surfaces of pins and disks and EPMA composition measurments. The amount of wear was devreased as increasing the content of glass fiber in matrix, since the alloy matrix was reinforced by glass fibers. The wear mechanism of the matrix specimen without glass fibers was proved as the contact area delamination. Oxide layer formed on sliding surface led to the increasing wear resistance. Specimens containing graphite particles showed an lubrication effect to counter disks.

The preparation of $Ti_{50}Cu_{28}Ni_{15}Sn_7$ metallic glass composite powders was accomplished by the mechanical alloying of a pure Ti, Cu, Ni, Sn and carbon nanotube (CNT) powder mixture after 8 h milling. In the ball-milled composites, the initial CNT particles were dissolved in the Ti-based alloy glassy matrix. The bulk metallic glass composite was successfully prepared by vacuum hot pressing the as-milled CNT/$Ti_{50}Cu_{28}Ni_{15}Sn_7$ metallic glass composite powders. A significant hardness increase with the CNT additions was observed for the consolidated composite compacts.
Degradation behaviors of filament-winded composites have been evaluated under the accelerated environmental test of high temperature, water immersion and thermal impact conditions. Two kinds of laminated composites coated by an urethane resin have been used: carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy(T700/Epon-826, CFRP) and glass-fiber reinforced phenolic (E-glass/phenolic, GFRP). For tensile strength of $0^{\circ}$ composites, CFRP showed little degradation while GFRP did high reduction by 25% under the influence of high temperature and water However for water-immersed $90^{\circ}$ composites tensile strength of both CFRP and GFRP showed high reduction. Bending strength and modulus of $90^{\circ}$ composites were largely reduced in water-immersion as well as high temperature environment. Urethane coating on the composite surface improved the bending properties by 20%, however hardly showed such improvement for water-immersed $90^{\circ}$ composites. In case of shear strength and modulus, both CFRP and GFRP showed high reduction by water-Immersion test but did a slight increase by high temperature and thermal impact conditions.
