  • Glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite materials have considerable promise for increased use in low cost high volum applications because of the potential for processing by solid phase forming. However, the forming characteristics of these materials have not been well known. The primary focus of this research is the investigation of the bendability of these composites and spring-back phenomena in pure bending. The materials tested contained 10, 35, and 40 percent by weight of randomly oriented glass fiber in a polypropylene matrix. The bending tests were performed at temperatures ranging form 75 ".deg. c" to 150 ".deg. c" and at punch speeds of 2.54 mm/sec and 0.0254 mm/sec. The measured bendability and spring back angle in pure bending werw compared with the predictions based on the simple analyical models. Goog agreement between experimental and analytical results was observed.esults was observed.

  • The glass thermal forming process provides a high volume, low cost approach to producing aspherical reflectors for x-ray optics. Thin glass sheets are shaped into mirror segments by replicating the mold shape at high temperature. Heating parameters in the glass thermal slumping process are crucial to improve surface quality of the formed glass. In this research, the heating process of a thermal slumping glass sheet on a concave parabolic mold was simulated with the finite-element method (FEM) to investigate the effects of heating rate and soaking temperature. Based on the optimized heating conditions, glass samples 0.5 mm thick were formed in a furnace with a steel concave parabolic mold. The figure errors of the formed glass were measured and discussed in detail. It was found that the formed glass was not fully slumped at the edges, and should be trimmed to achieve better surface deviation. The root-mean-square (RMS) deviation and peak-valley (PV) deviation between formed glass and mold along the axial direction were 2.3 μm and 4.7 μm respectively.

  • We use so many plastic products in everyday. Because polymer materials have a lot of merits including low cost and easiness of forming, they are widely used in many manufacturing industries. Microcellular foaming process was developed at MIT in 1980's to save a quantity of materials and increase mechanical properties. The improvement of strength is very important factor in relation with the reduction of mass. So the first purpose of this research is to improve the strength of the microcellular foamed plastics as variation of glass-fiber's volume friction. Also the characteristic of filler such as glass-fiber was presented in a microcellular foaming process.

  • In this paper, tensile and bending tests of glass/polypropylene composite (Twintex) specimens fabricated by various forming conditions were carried out and the results were compared according to the forming conditions to find the appropriate condition for the forming composite bone plates. From the tests it was found that the most appropriate forming conditions were $230^{\circ}C$, 3MPa. Composite bone plates were formed using this condition by two different fabricating methods for screw holes: one was a net shape molding and the other was drilling. The forming and bending tests revealed that the drilling process provided much better bending stiffness of bone plates. This paper provided the most appropriate condition for forming composite bone plates and this result was also expected to offer informative data on forming of other Twintex structures.

  • Commercial Zr-based amorphous alloy was recycled and oxygen was introduced during the recycling process. The oxygen content can have a great effect on the glass forming ability and the mechanical properties of the alloy. Therefore, it was closely examined. The initial oxygen content in the raw material was 1,244 ppm. It was increased to 3,789 ppm in the alloy after ten recycling processes. As the recycling processes were repeated, the oxygen content increased. Specifically, after four recycling processes, it increased sharply as compared to that after three recycling processes. After ten recycling processes, the glass transition temperature (Tg) increased from 613 K to 634 K and the crystallization temperature (Tx) increased from 696 K to 706 K. On the other hand, the super-cooled liquid region (${\Delta}T=Tx-Tg$) decreased slightly from 83 K to 72 K while the reduced glass transition temperature (Trg = Tg/Tm) was 0.63, remaining constant even when the oxygen content was increased. These results indicated that the increased oxygen content deteriorated the glass forming ability. The bending strength as determined in a three-point bending test showed a sharp decrease from 3,055 to 2,062 MPa as the oxygen content was increased from 1,244 ppm to 3,789 ppm; the extension was also decreased from 3.02 to 1.74 mm. These findings meant that the alloy became brittle.

  • Micro-forming is a suited technology to manufacture very small metallic parts(several $mm{\sim}{\mu}m$). Micro-forming of $Zr_{62}Cu_{17}Ni_{13}Al_8$ bulk metallic glass(BMG) as a candidate material for this developing process are feasible at a relatively low stress in the supercooled liquid state without any crystallization during hot deformation. In this study, micro- formability of a representative bulk metallic glass, $Zr_{62}Cu_{17}Ni_{13}Al_8$. was investigated for micro-forging of U-shape pattern. Micro-formability was estimated by comparing $R_f$ values ($=A_f/A_g$), where $A_g$ is cross-sectional area of U groove, and $A_f$ the filled area by material. Micro-forging process was simulated and analyzed by applying finite element method. FEM simulation results showed reasonable agreement with the experimental results when the material properties and simulation conditions such as top die speed, remeshing criteria and boundary conditions were tightly controlled. The micro-formability of $Zr_{62}Cu_{17}Ni_{13}Al_8$ was increased with increasing load and time in the temperature range of the supercooled liquid state. Also, FEM simulation using a commercial software, DEFORM was confirmed to be applicable for the optimization of micro-forming process.

  • In this paper, a new barrier rib forming method of embossed barrier rib (EBR) formation process for the PDP rear panel was introduced. The process is mainly composed of green sheet fabrication, lamination of the green sheet on the rear glass panel having data electrodes, and roll embossing followed by firing. The EBR process has two advantages over the conventional barrier rib forming methods. One is the process requires less equipment investment than the conventional methods by about 20% of the current rear panel fabrication equipment investment owing to the simplified fabrication process. The other advantage is its reduced rear panel manufacturing cost by eliminating the time consuming and complicated processes and waste of materials in the conventional methods. In this study, general procedure of EBR fabrication process is described and the characteristics of prototype PDP using EBR panel are discussed.

  • Recently, various bulk metallic glasses (BMG's) haying good mechanical and chemical properties were developed. BMG's can easily be deformed in the supercooled liquid region, via viscous flow mechanism. In our previous work, we evaluated the deformation behavior and some other basic properties of Z $r_{41.2}$ $Ti_{13.8}$C $u_{12.5}$N $i_{10}$B $e_{22.5}$ alloy. In this study, we investigated the micro forming of Z $r_{41.2}$ $Ti_{13.8}$C $u_{12.5}$N $i_{10}$B $e_{22.5}$ alloy. The process condition was chosen based on the viscosity data from TMA, and superalloy and Si wafer with micro patterns on the surface were used as forming die. The alloy showed good replication of the patterns. However, some stripe patterns, resembling scratches, appeared on the deformed alloy surface. These scratches can be reduced or eliminated by polishing before forming.ing.ore forming.ing.

  • Recently, various bulk metallic glasses (BMG's) having good mechanical and chemical properties were developed. BMG's can easily be deformed in the supercooled liquid region, via viscous flow mechanism. By using the viscous flow, the very low pressure is needed to deform the materials. In this study, we investigated the structural transition and deformation behavior of Vitreloy 1 (Zr/sub 41.2/Ti/sub 13.8/Cu/sub 12.5/Ni/sub 10/Be/sub 22.5/) using TMA and DSC. We applied the results to the micro forming process. The forming condition was chosen based on the viscosity data from TMA, and Si wafer with micro patterns on the surface was used as a forming die. The deformed surface was analyzed by SEM and 3D Surface Profiling System. The alloy showed good replication of the patterns. Quantitative measurement of roughness was useful to evaluate the replication. Surface condition of the deformed surface was determined by the initial surface condition.
