  • To improve the mechanical properties of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites through interfacial adhesion control between the PP matrix and glass fiber, the surface of the glass fiber was modified with PP-graft-maleic anhydride (MAPP). Surface modification of the glass fiber was carried out through the well-known hydrolysis-condensation reaction using 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane, and then subsequently treated with MAPP to produce the desired MAPP-anchored glass fiber (MAPP-a-GF). The glass-fiber-reinforced PP composites were prepared by typical melt-mixing technique. The effect of chemical modification of the glass fiber surface on the mechanical properties of composites was investigated. The resulting mechanical and morphological properties showed improved interfacial adhesion between the MAPP-a-GF and PP matrix in the composites.

  • This study concerns with the effect of fiber weight fraction on the fracture toughness of long glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene composites. Fracture tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens made of glass fiber polypropylene composites. Three fiber weight fractions of 20%, 30%, and 40% were used. Fracture toughness was determined from the compliance method. Results showed that compliance decreased with increasing fiber weight fraction while critical load increased with fiber weight fraction. Averaged fracture toughness increased 14% as fiber weight fraction increased from 20% to 40%.

  • This study investigates the effect of fiber content on the fracture behavior of thermoplastic composites (glass fiber/polypropylene). The fiber contents used were 20%, 30%, and 40% by weight. Fracture tests were performed using compact tension (CT) specimens made of composite sheets of three fiber contents (20%, 30%, 40%). The results showed that compliance, fracture load, and fracture toughness were affected by the fiber content. The compliance decreased with fiber content while the fracture load increased as the fiber content increased. The fracture toughness also increased as fiber content increased. Specifically, the fracture toughness increased 14% as the fiber content increased from 20% to 40%.

  • The effects of fillers [talc, calcium carbonate, glass fiber, and EBR (ethylene-butene rubber)] on the shrinkage and mechanical properties of injection-molded polypropylene composites were investigated. The shrinkage correlated with the shape of the filler particles: at the same amount added, glass fibers with a large aspect ratio had the greatest effect on the shrinkage of polypropylene composites, followed by flake-shaped talc and granular calcium carbonate. It was confirmed that the addition of EBR rubber as an impact strength modifier reduced shrinkage proportionally to the added content. In addition, the addition of glass fiber resulted in the greatest increases in tensile and flexural strengths.

  • The main goal of this work is to study the effect of glass fiber volume fraction on the result of tensile test with respect to glass fiber/polypropylene(GF/PP) composites. The tensile test and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites were investigated in the fiber volume fraction range from 10% to 30%. The tensile strength and the fracture strength increased with the increasing of the fiber volume fraction in the tested range. Fiber pull-out and debonding of this composites increased with the fiber volume fraction in thc tested range. The major failure mechanisms were classified into the debonding, the fiber pull out, the delamination and the matrix deformation.

  • A pultrusion resin impregnation (PRI) die, which has been developed recently in our laboratory, was used to pre-pare various composite system. The continuous fiber reinforced composites of glass fiber/polypropylene(GFPP) and glass fiber/polyamide 6 (GFPA) were first manufactured by means of the PRI die and then cut into chopped pellets of predet-ermined length. These pellets and either virgin or modified thermoplastic resin were melt-mixed by a twin screw extruder to prepare GF/PA/PP and GF/PA/PPMA system. The mechanical properties of these blends were investigated and discussed in terms of their morphological observations. These preliminary results revealed that this new impregnation die could be suc-cessfully applied to produce prepregs suitavle for the final shaping process.

  • In this study, the effects of surface treatment of bamboo fiber on the physical properties of polypropylene(PP)/glass fiber(GF)/Bamboo fiber(BF) composite for engine cover were investigated. PP, GF and BF were fixed at 40%, 40% and 20% and the surface of bamboo fibers were treated to 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% as an acid and alkali solution. PP/GF/BR composites using surface treated bamboo fibers were prepared and their tensile strength, bursting strength and impact strength were measured by universal testing machine(UTM). The composites with alkali treated bamboo fiber showed better mechanical properties than the acid treated composites. It was checked that the optimum alkali content was at 1.0% from the results of mechanical properties. The effect of surface treatment on the mechanical properties was confirmed by SEM images of fractured surface.

  • In this study, a mixture of polypropylene fibers and glass fibers were used to weave polypropylene/glass fiber-reinforced composite panels with characteristics such as highly elongated short fibers, high ductility, anti-fouling, and hydrophobicity as a result of a directional property. Mechanical and environmental tests were carried out with specimens fabricated with this composite panel, and its applicability to shipbuilding and ocean leisure industries was evaluated through a comparison with existing glass fiber-reinforced composite materials. The results of this experiment verified the excellence of the polypropylene/glass-mixed woven fiber-reinforced composite material compared to the existing glass fiber-reinforced composite material. However, the forming process needs to be changed to improve the weak interfacial bonding, and the properties of the composite material itself could be improved through mixed weaving with other fibers after development. Maximizing of the advantages of the polypropylene fibers and overcoming their shortcomings will improve their applicability to the shipbuilding, ocean leisure, and other industries, and increase the value of polypropylene fibers in the composite material market.

  • Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness GIC was performed by the impact test in this work The main goal of this work is to study effects of temperature in the impact test with glass fiber/polypropylene(GF/pp) composites. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$ by impact test. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up or goes down. Major failure mechanisms can be classified such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.
