Synthesis of Novel Y-type Nonlinear Optical Polyester with Enhanced Thermal Stability of Second Harmonic Generation for Electro-Optic Applications

  • Methyl 3,4-di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)benzylidenecyanoacetate (3) was prepared and condensed with terephthaloyl chloride to yield novel Y-type polyester (4) containing 3,4-dioxybenzylidenecyanoacetate groups as NLO-chromophores, which constituted parts of the polymer main chains. The resulting polymer 4 is soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymer 4 shows thermal stability up to $280^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperature obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near $105^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength is around 2.42 pm/V. The dipole alignment exhibits high thermal stability up to near $T_g$, and there is no SHG decay below $100^{\circ}C$ due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

The dipole alignment exhibited a thermal stability up to near $T_g$ and no significant SHG decay was observed below 100 ${^{\circ}C}$ due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

  • The fatigue behavior of GFRP composites is affected by environmental parameters. Therefore, we have to study on effect of sea water on fatigue behavior of GFRP composites as to maintain the safety and confidence in design of ocean structure of GFRP. In this paper, we investigated the fatigue properties of chopped strand glass mat/polyester composite in synthetic sea water. (pH 8.2) In case of the glass fiber (CSM type) reinforced polyester composite materials, the fatigue crack in the both dry and wet specimens tested in air or synthetic sea water occurred at the initial of cycle. Thereafter, it was divided with two regions that one decreased with the crack extension and the other increased with the crack extension. The transition point occurred during the crack propagation shifted to high ${\Delta}K$ value as load increase but its point is not changed regardless of immersion or test environment under a constant load. The synthetic sea water degrades the bond strength between fiber and matrix, thereby the tendency of rapid deceleration and acceleration of the crack growth was appeared.

  • A recycling process for the waste FRP from boats was developed. The recycling process is composed of decomposition of waste FRP with propylene glycol and synthesis of recycled unsaturated polyester resin from the decomposed liquid material. Prior to the decomposition, waste FRP was cut into 2cm x 5cm segments and mechanical impact was applied by press roller to give gaps between cumulated laminates. Propylene glycol effectively decomposed the waste FRP segments and glass fibers were easily separated from decomposed liquid material. Recycled unsaturated polyester resin could be made from the decomposed liquid material by reaction with maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride.

  • Characteristics of biodegradable polymers for mulching mat for seedling were investigated. The solvent solubility of polymers is highest in methylene chloride and chloroform. Tensile strength and breaking elongation of polymer dipped paper were increased to the 0.43-1.46 kN/m and the 0.03-0.26%, respectively. PLAs had showed lower glass transition temperature and melting point than those of polyester. As a result, PLA should be most suitable polymer for mulching mat manufacturing. After biodegradation of polymers by lipase, surface of polymers was change to more flat due to enzymatic degradation.

  • In this work the electrical characteristics of organic TFTs using organic insulator and flexible polyester substrate have been investigated. Pentacene and PVP(polyvinylphenol) are used as an active semiconducting layer and dielectric layer respectively. Pentacene was thermally evaporated in vacuum at a pressure of about $1{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr and at a deposition rate of $0.5{\AA}$/sec, and PVP was spin-coated. Aluminium and gold were used for gate and source/drain electrodes. 0.1mm thick flexible polyester substrate was used instead of glass or silicon wafer.

  • 1-{2,4-Di-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl}-2-(2-thienyl)ethene (5) was prepared and condensed with terephthaloyl chloride to yield polyester (6). Polymer 6 was reacted with tetracyanoethylene to give novel Y-type polyester (7) containing 1-(2,4-dioxyethoxy)phenyl-2-{5-(2,2,3-tricyanovinyl)-2-thienyl)}ethenyl groups as NLO-chromophores, which are parts the polymer backbones. Polymer 7 is soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. It showed thermal stability up to 300 ${^{\circ}C}$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glasstransition temperature obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near 134 ${^{\circ}C}$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_33$) of poled polymer film at the 1560 nm fundamental wavelength was around 6.74 x $10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to the glass-transition temperature ($Tg$), and there was no SHG decay below 135 ${^{\circ}C}$ because of the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

  • For this study, specimens were prepared using five types of composite resin and resin-reinforced glass ionomer Fuji II LC, and 29 days precipitation was done in four kinds of solution, which were soy sauce, gochujang, wine, and distilled water. Ten specimens for each coloring sample were divided into two groups, one those surfaces was polyester film and the other with 1200-grit abrasive paper, and 20 specimens per materials. Color change (${\Delta}{\ast}ab$) in the colored specimens is measured in 2days, 7days, 14days and 29days using spectrophotometer (CM-2600d, Konica, Minolta, Ramsey, NJ). All values were considered significant when P<0.05. 1. Each material is discolored over time under the influence of different storage solutions. 2. In soy source, among the specimens polished with polyester film, color change was observed in resin-modified glass ionomer Fuji II LC, prodigy and compomer F-2000 on day 2. Meanwhile, Fuji II LC showed noticeable color change in specimens prepared with 1200-grit sandpaper on day 2, which was followed by flowable resin on day 7. 3. On day 2, there was a color change with the specimens of flowable resin, resin-modified glass ionomer Fuji II LC and Prodigy among the hybrid specimen in the groups of polyester film in gochujang.

In this paper, ion exchanged zeolite was added to the unsaturated polyester resin reinforced glass fiber. To investigate the animicrobial performance. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was used according to the FC TM-20-2003 method.
