The aroma pattern was analyzed using electronic nose to examine the possibility of origin discrimination according to the mixing ratio of Chinese and Korean red ginseng concentrates. The origin of Chinese red ginseng concentrate and Korea red ginseng concentrate could be distinguished and the pattern of aroma component detected decreased as the mixing ratio of Chinese red ginseng concentrate increased. Cultivar and habitat of Korean red ginseng concentrated was remarkably distinguished by the chromatogram of frequency pattern, derivative pattern and visual pattern using olfactory images known as vapor printTM.
Various rates of 2, 4-2 were sprayed on 2 and 3 year old ginseng plants as fouler spray to define the critical concentration. No apparent plant injury was noticeable for those ginseng plants when application concentration of 2, 4-D doubled the recommended dosage (70 mil 10a). Neither abnormal fouler change occurred nor any inhibition in leaf and stem growth was resulted for the plants treated with 2, 4-D concentrated two times of the recommended dosage. When the rates of 2, 4-D application were increased greater than this level, injury ratings increased linearly with the rates of 2, 4-D application and plant growth was inhibited. Ethylene gas was not produced from the ginseng plant treated with 2 times concentrated 2, 4-D, how- ever the ginseng plants produced 0.03 to 0.09 ppd ethylene gas when the rate of application were increased 3 and 4 times, respectively. On the other hand the soybean treated with the recommended amount of 2i-D produced ethylene gas of 10-20 times higher compared with ginseng plants and died. Photosynthesis ability of the ginseng leaf was significantly decreased by 2, 4.D fouler application but it was recovered 4 weeks after 2, 4-D fouler treatment. The herbicide 2, 4-D was appreciated to 2, 3 and 4 years old ginseng plants as fouler spray with the rates of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 times of the recommended dosage to define the effects of 2, 4-D on the plant growth and root yield of the ginseng, There were no significant differences in the leaf and stem growth between untreated and 2, 4-D treated plant. Berry maturing of 3 and 4 year old ginseng was not influenced by 2, 4-D. The root weight of 4 years old ginseng plant was not reduced b). application of 2, 4-D concentrated 2 times of the recommended dosage. Application time of the herbicide 2, 4-D had no effects on the leaf or stem growth of 2, 3 and 4 year old year old ginseng plants. When the ginseng seedling was treated with 2, 4-D, detrimental phenomena as stem bending and deceleration of seedling leaf margin occurred, but stem bending was recovere d in a few day.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of cosmetic products containing concentrated ginseng using novel methods based on Traditional Korean medicine (TKM). In TKM, inspection of facial skin was an important method to diagnose symptoms and body condition of patients. Doctors in oriental medicine examined a patient as observing symptoms on the face and skin related to inner organs. This was called "mang-jin. In this study, eleven female, who have been using the cosmetic products containing concentrated ginseng for the last 5 years, and eleven healthy controls, who have never used the same product, were recruited. Three doctors in oriental medicine evaluated 17 inspection factors on facial skin. And 7 non-invasive skin bioengineering factors were assessed by various instruments at the same time. In results, 7 factors of the inspection were better in using the product than in controls. And sebum, roughness, pigmentation and wrinkle depth were significantly lower in using the product than in controls. So, this results propose that the cosmetic product containing concentrated ginseng has a good anti-aging effect on skin. And it is suggested that the novel evaluation method combined, Traditional Korean medicine and modern bioengineering technique, has to be developed for holistic concept of Hanbang cosmetics.
Browning intensity is a major factor to estimate the quality of red ginseng or red ginseng products. The Maillard type of browning reaction proceeds nonenzymatically during extraction and concentration of red ginseng. The present studies were carried out to investigate the effects of amino acids and sugars on the browning reaction during extraction and concentration of red ginseng. Red ginseng was pulverized to 115 mesh and then tenfold (v/w) of water was added to the powder to make the substrate of red ginseng. Solution (0.1 M) of fourteen amino acids and of folly silgars were added to the substrates of red ginseng powder and these were then extracted and concentrated to examine their browning intensities. Amino acids were more effective than sligars in acrelerating the browning reaction. Acceleration of the browning reaction in the concentrate was in the order of arginine> histidine>glycine>alanine>lysine phenyl alanine>aspartic acid>lelicine>threonine>gllitamic acid>tyrosine>valine>istleucine>methionine for amino acids, and was glucose>frlictose >silcrose, maltose for sugars.
The concentrated red ginseng extract (RGE) which was prepared from water extract of red ginseng tails was investigated for its changes in color intensity, sugar contents and during storage at various temperatures. In order to evaluate the color of RCE, a spectrophotometric measurement in ultraviolet and visible range was applied. The concentrated RGE was divided into three fractions of aqueous, butanol and benzene layers. It was found that : (1) Increase in RCE color during heat treatment was considered to be due to nonezymatic browning reaction. Water soluble layer showed approximately 100 times higher color intensity than those of organic solvent layers (2) The RCE stored at 8$0^{\circ}C$ showed an increase in fructose and glucose content while a rapid decrease was resulted at 10$0^{\circ}C$. (3) A rapid increase in absorbances at 400 and 460nm was shown at 90 and 10$0^{\circ}C$ after an initial induction period and slowed down after 50 hours . (4) A significant relationship was found between decrease in sugar content and increase in color intensity. (5) Absorbance ratio of 400nm/460nm indicated that benzene layer has about two times higher value in violet color than those of butanol and aqueous layers.

To investigate the feeding value of the concentrated feedstuff including the Korean ginseng meal instead of wheat bran, Holstein milk cows were fed by this feedstuff (10kg/day) for 80 days, and the amounts of milk production and quality of milk were checked. The results are as follows: 1. Milk production of cows fed by the concentrated feedstuff including the ginseng meal was increased as averaged as 1.25kg/day compared with those of controlled cows during same period(SA) and before feeding treatment (SB). Significant different of milk production was found between cows treated and cows of SB plot, but there was no significant difference of milk production between cows treated and cows of SA plot. 2. Milk fat content was significantly increased as moth as 0.22%, 0.69% and 0.455% by the feeding of ginseng meal compared with that of SB Plat and that of SA Plot, and as average value, respectively. 3. Solid not fat (SNF) of milk from cows fed by the ginseng meal was also significantly increased as much as 0.845%, 1.339% and 1.0925 tempered with these of cows before treatment (SB) and cows controlled (SA), and as average value, respectively. 4. Specific gravity of milk produced from cows treated was higher as average as 0.0055 than those of controlled plots (SA and SB). Significant difference of specific gravity was found between cows treated and cows of SA plot, but there was no significant difference between tows treated and cods of SB plot. 5. Acidity of milk produced from cows treated was lower as averaged as 0.0045 than those of controlled plots (SA and SB). Significant difference between cows treated and cows of SA plot was found, but there was no significant difference between cows treated and cows treated and cows of SB plot.
This study was conducted to define the effect of 2, 4-D foliar application on the plant growth. photosynthesis ability and ethylene gas production of the ginseng plant. Neither abnomal foliar changes occured nor any inhibition in the leaf and stem growth was resulted for the plants treated with 2,4-D concentrated three times of the recommended dosage. The angle of petiole to the stem became wider by 2, 4-D foliar application. The higher concentration treatment of 2,4-D made the petiole angle significantly wider. Foliar application of the herbicide 2,4-D inhibited photosynthesis of the ginseng leaf. The inhibition rate of photosynthesis was significantly increased with the application concentration of 2, 4-D. Inhibition in photosyn-thesis ability by 2,4-D application with doubled concentration was recovered in three days after treatment. When 2,4-D was treated with a concentration tripled the recommended dosage, 12 days were needed to recover the photosynthesis ability of the ginseng leaf. Ethylene gas was not detected from the ginseng plants treated with 2 times concentrated 2, 4-D. However, the ginseng plants produced 0.03-0.04 ppm ethylene gas when the application rate was increased 3 times. The amount of ethylene gas produced by ginseng plant treated with 3 times concentrated 2, 4-D was only 1/20 compared with the amount produced by the soybean plant treated with the recommended dosage of 2, 4-D.

This study was carried out to develop the method of preparing lecithin-fortified ginseng extract. Firstly, soybean lecithin was mixed with soybean oil (LCS) in varying ratio (2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20%). Then, one part volume of LCS was mixed with three parts volume of ginseng extract with 10% solid matter content and the mixture was vortexed vigorously. Finally, the mixture was spinned at the speed of 3,000 rpm for 30 minutes to separate oil and aqueous ginseng extract layer (AG). AG was then subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis of phospholipids and ginsenosides. Fatty acid composition and crude fat content before and after LCS was determined. Stability of lecithin in ginseng extract was determined by analyzing phospholipid content in the one third upper and lower layer of the concentrated AG in Falcon tubes while storing the LCS treated concentrated AG in 4, 25 and 40oC for 6 months. Ratio of lecithin transferred to AG increased with the increase in lecithin content of soybean oil. There was no significant change in fatty acid composition and crude fat content, and ginsenoside content in the ginseng extract before and after LCS treatment. TLC and HPLC pattern of saponin fraction before and after treating the ginseng extract with LCS demonstrated no observable difference. There was no change in lecithin content in the upper and lower one third layer of ginseng extract in the tubes after storing the concentrated AG in 4, 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ for 6 months. Ginsenosides HPLC pattern was not changed when stored the LCS-treated ginseng extract in those conditions for six months, indicating satisfiable stability of the LCS-treated concentrated ginseng extract. From these results, it can be concluded that treatment of the ginseng extract with lecithin containing soybean oil is a labor effective method with satisfiable stability to fortify lecithins to ginseng extract.
The quality of concentrated red ginseng extract, which was prepared from Korean red ginseng tails, was studied with respect to the changes in the ethanol concentration in the range of 0-90% and temperature of 70-10$0^{\circ}C$ during 1-5 times of extraction. Each extraction time was taken 8 hours at given temperature. The ratio of free sugars to total sugar changed significantly with the number of extraction and ethanol concentrations. An increase in reducing sugar and free sugars and a decrease in extracted soluble starch were fond as ethanol concentration increased. Extraction temperature was found little effect on extractability of sugars and their ratios. Analysis of free sugars in red ginseng extract identified 6 frdd sugars such as rhamnose, xylose, fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose, including sucrose to be major.
