The key objective of this study was to analyze sampling efficiency of various fish sampling gears for a lentic ecosystem health assessment. This survey was conducted at twelve sampling locations of Jinyang Reservoir in November, 2008 and June, 2009. Sampling gears used in the field were fyke net (FN), gill net (GN), trammel net (TN), casting net (CN), minnow trap (MT), and kick net (KN). Fishes sampled in Jinyang Reservoir were 29 species, in which tolerant species, as a proportions of the total numbers, dominated the fish community compared to the sensitive species. Overall sampling indicated that 28 species (3,567 individuals) were sampled by the CN and 15 species (3,108 individuals) were sampled by the FN along with 14 species (577 individuals) by the TN, 7 species (107 individuals) by the GN, 6 species (59 individuals) by MT, and 5 species (95 individuals) by KN, respectively. Statistical analysis (MANOVA), based on CPUE of the fishing gears showed that fish species and numbers of the CN were significantly (p < 0.05) greater than those of any other sampling gears. In contrast, sampling gear of MT and KN showed the least efficiency in our survey. This survey is a preliminary results for the tests of sampling gear's efficiency in lentic ecosystems, thus further extensive studies are required for the verification.

Biodegradable polybutylene succinate(PBS) is an environment friendly plastics for fisheries, because it can mitigate the ghost fishing problem caused by gill-net and trap fisheries. To evaluate photodegradability of PBS monofilament in comparison with polyamide(PA) and polyethylene(PE) monofilament, these 3 types of monofilaments were spun and exposed to ultraviolet light(UV) of weather-ometer for 900 hours, and then their modification, crystal structure, strength, and extensibility were analysed. PBS monofilament did not show any crack and maintained its crystal structure after 900 hour exposure to UV whereas PE monofilament began showing cracks and structure modification after 600 hour exposure. Under UV exposure, the strength and extensibility decreased more rapidly in PBS than in PA and PE. We estimate that gill nets made of PBS monofilament can endure for about 1 year. The breaking strength and elongation decreased linearly with the exposure time for the 3 types of monofilaments. The derived regression equations of the residual tenacity(RT, kg/$mm^2$) and the residual extensibility(RE, %) with the exposure time in year(Y) for each monofilament were; PBS : RT=48.598 - 8.6437Y($R^2=0.93$), RE=28.165 - 7.3233Y($R^2=0.98$), P A : RT=59.771 - 8.6437Y($R^2=0.98$), RE=32.198 - 5.2772Y($R^2=0.92$), P E : RT=60.898 - 5.6528Y($R^2=0.98$), RE=11.887 - 0.7188Y($R^2=0.98$).
A single specimen (1,058 mm TL) of Pteroplatytrygon violacea, belonging to the family Dasyatidae, was firstly collected by using drift gill net in the north-western coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea on 6 July, 2017. This species was characterized by having a broadly rounded snout, five pairs of gill openings, tail with a large spine, ventral tail fold not reaching to the tip of tail, no dorsal fold, and ventral surface of disc dark purple. Based on such morphological characters, the specimen was identified as P. violacea and confirmed with the nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. We added P. violacea to the Korean fish fauna and propose the new Korean names, "Bo-ra-saek-ga-o-ri-sok" and "Bo-ra-saek-ga-o-ri" for the genus and species, respectively.

A single specimen (373.2 mm SL) of the snailfish Careproctus colletti was collected by gill-net at Donghae-si, East Sea, Korea. This species is characterized by having the slender and stick-like teeth, lower end of gill opening not reaching to upper origin of pectoral fin, rays of lower part of pectoral fin long, reaching behind anus and margins of dorsal and anal fin dark. We described it as the first record to Korean fish fauna, and proposed the new Korean name "Meok-bun-hong-kkom-chi" for this species.
Fish community study by a gill net in four coastal waters of Southern Sea, Korea were simultaneously conducted to determine seasonal variation of species composition and abundance from March to November, 2006. A total of 68 species and 577,422.9 g by four study waters were caught during the survey period. The dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Mugil cephalus, Cynoglossus robustus and Argyrosomus argentatus of 58.2% in total catch and they occupied 63.1% in IRD (index of relative distribution). By regional community, fishes that compromised 18 species and 53,148.8 g in Tongyeong Donam were caught and the dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Hexagrammos otakii, Liparis tessellatus, Paralichthys olivaceus. In Yeosu Gyedong, fishes of 44species and 123,926.9 g were caught and the dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Muraenesox cinereus. In Jangheung Sumoon, fishes of 44 species and 123,926.9 g were caught and the dominant species were Mugil cephalus, Platycephalus indicus, Cynoglossus robustus, Liparis tessellatus. And in Jindo Modo, fishes of 32 species and 171,426.3 g were caught and the dominant species were Platycephalus indicus, Argyrosomus argentatus, Cynoglossus robustus. Therefore, the species composition and abundance of fish by region were very different. These results seem to be related to differences of regional environmental condition, productivity, and fish ecological habits. And the fish catch in four study waters were high from April to July, and the number of fish species and diversity index had a tendency to increased from March to November. The ranges of environmental factors caught fish were $8.3{\sim}28.5^{\circ}C$ in temperature, 26.59~34.92 in salinity and also these factors were correlated to seasonal variation of fish.

We investigated the feeding ecology of juvenile chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) during the critical early life stage prey selectivity of juvenile chum salmon during early marine migration in Korean waters at spring 2011. Salmon juveniles and zooplanktons were collected to draw with $20m{\times}5m$ gill net and $300{\mu}m$ mesh zooplankton net at each station on 11th-13th April n 2011. Collected zooplanktons were classified to 5 Phylum, 6 Class, 9 Order 17 Species in this study. Almost 76.4-100% species were classified to Phylum Arthropoda, dominant species was a species out of Hyperia galba of Order Amphipoda, Acartia spp and Paracalanus parvus of Order Calanoida. Collected salmon juveniles were grew up to average 4.7-5.4 cm fork length and average 1.0-1.5 g wet weight in whole station. Fish stomach content (mg/salmon) was heaver to 97.4, 82.4 and 63.2 mg wet weight/salmon in ST 2, 3, 4 than 20.4, 18.9 mg/salmon of ST 1, 5, because there are fish (sand eel, Hypoptychus dybowskii) and Krill (Euphausia) as prey in salmon stomach in ST 2, 3, 4. And ST 2, 3, 4 and 5 were dominated by Amphipoda as Hyperia galba, Themisto japonica and Gammarus sp., but ST 1 was dominated by copepod, because of absence of Amphipoda in the station. Therefore small Amphipoda as Hyperia galba was good prey for just released salmon juvenile in nature.
Physiological parameters were measured on six primiparous, non-pregnant Holstein cows prior to peak lactation over a 3-month summer season in southwestern Taiwan. The objectives were to characterize heat stress-induced change in functionality of mammary gland under natural climates of tropical summer and to establish physiological indices applicable to this environment in referring to this change. Environmental and physiological readings, milk and blood samples were taken at 15:00 h biweekly for totally five time points during the study. Climate readings showed that the afternoon humidex value reached the highest (53.5) around mid summer. Rectal temperature of cows taken simultaneously varied between $38.26^{\circ}C$ and $40.02^{\circ}C$ in parallel to humidex. Milk production declined drastically from 29.2 to 22.2 kg/d the first month entering summer but leveled up at end of the summer season suggesting effects exerted by heat stress rather than stages of lactation. Lactose content decreased linearly (p<0.05) with times in summer, from 4.69 to 4.38%. On the other hand, activity of N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGase) in milk increased linearly to over two folds (p<0.05) during the same intervals. Elevations of fractional constituent of BSA in whey protein and serum cortisol level were also noticed in the course. Measurement of arteriovenous concentration (A-V) difference across the mammary gland demonstrated net uptake of glucose and net release of urea throughout the study period. The amount of urea released from mammary gland increased (p<0.05) progressively from 1.54 to 7.76 mg/dl during summer. It is concluded that gradual regression of mammary gland occurred along the humid tropical summer season. This regression is likely initiated through elevation of body temperature, which is irreversible above certain point. The increased release of urea from mammary gland during heat stress suggests its potential role as an early indicator of suboptimal mammary function.
Maturity and spawning of the atka mackerel, Pleurogrammus azonus, was investigated based on the samples collected by gill net and set net in the East Sea from January 2006 to March 2009. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) began to increase in October, and reached a maximum between November and December. After spawning GSI began to decrease from January. The spawning period was from October to January, and main spawning period was from November to December. Annual reproductive cycles of this species could be divided into five successive stages in females; early growing stage (June), late growing stage (July to August), mature stage (September to October), ripe and spent stage (November to January), and recovery and resting stage (January to May). Males showed four successive stages: growing stage (June to August), mature stage (September to October), ripe and spent stage (October to December), and recovery and resting stage (January to May). P. azonus could be one of polycyclic species spawning two times or more during one spawning season. Number of total and mature eggs in the fecundity were proportional to fork length. The fork length at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 26.9 cm.
Fish species composition and size frequency distribution of major species were analyzed using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Uljin and Hupo in 2002. Fish collected during the study were 20 species, 1,927 individuals and 53,969 g off Uljin, and 23 species, 2,762 individuals and 146,550 g off Hupo. Liparis tessellatus, Glyptocephalus stelleri and Cleisthenes pinetorum were predominated in abundance, and these 3 species were accounted for 70.9% in the number of individuals and 83.8% in biomass off Uljin, and 90.3% and 70.9% off Hupo, respectively. In the Korean coastal water of the East Sea, the migrating pelagic fish were predominated in catch by set net or gill net, and species composition varied greatly by season. Meanwhile, the fish collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Uljin and Hupo were dominated by the resident demersal fishes and did not show any clear seasonal trend in species composition. Collected G. stelleri and C. pinetorum were mainly composed of young fish, and size data as depth indicated that they moved into deeper shelf as they grew.

Soil $CO_2$ emission is one of the primary components in carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems. To accurately assess their net ecosystem exchange of $CO_2$ and net primary production, measurement of soil $CO_2$ efflux is required along with that of canopy $CO_2$ flux. In this paper, soil $CO_2$ flux measurement technique using closed dynamic chamber systems is briefly reviewed. Preliminary results on soil $CO_2$ exchange and inter-comparison of different measurement systems currently used in Korean regional network of tower flux measurement sites (KoFlux) are also reported.
