  • The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a differentiated instruction-learning reflecting various characteristics and demands of the gifted underachievers, and thereby help to develop the study attitude and study achievement of the gifted underachievers. To achieve the purpose, a case study on five gifted underachievers who are in $6^{th}$ grade of elementary school was conducted. By collecting and analyzing a variety of data including standardized tests, interviews with teachers, students, and parents, and observation journals, this researcher examined the characteristics and demands of the gifted underachievers. For the development of the program, differentiated strategies were designed according to students' interest and concern, their multiple-intelligence, and their learning styles. As a result of the application of them, a program with a total of 20 sections was finally developed. The result of the application for the differentiated instruction-learning program revealed improvements in their academic achievements. In addition, it was found that their learning motives were improved. The program was also found to affect their self-concept and their attitude toward learning. The study showed that developing an education program for the gifted underachievers should begin from the analysis of each student's characteristics. Also, it was found that a differentiation strategy could become an alternative to apply various characteristics and demands of the gifted underachievers to the development of a program. The gifted underachievers' intellectual and definitive characteristics were changed even by the short-term mediation. Therefore, the new issue about educating the gifted is to provide a differentiated instruction-learning program fitting their characteristics and demands and help them exert their potential as best as they could.

  • In order to investigate the differentiation for gifted students, we studied the present condition of differentiation applied in science classes at regular schools, private educational institutes, and gifted education centers. A questionnaire regarding differential instruction was administered to 90 eighth graders enrolled in university- based gifted centers in Seoul. The results of chi-square testing based on the questions and educational institutions showed that students used only a textbook at regular schools and several workbooks at private educational institutes, while students could use various specialty publications at gifted education centers. Students frequently took post-test at regular schools and private education institutes. Further, at regular schools and private education institutes, students who completed curricular activities early spent their time performing unrelated tasks or reviewing the lessons or solving problems. Gifted students tend to develop their interests by themselves through science classes at regular schools. However, efforts to group students according to their interests were predominant at the gifted education centers. The response rate for students' choice of curricular activities and teachers' preparation for advanced learners were the lowest in all questions.

  • This study was aimed at researching the current condition of differentiated education on gifted infants and a demand for support in an educational institution for gifted infants. The survey was conducted on teachers and principals in infant education institutions including kindergartens, day care centers and other institutions(English kindergartens and playing school) in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon and total 309 questionnaires were collected. Result first, infant educational institutions like kindergartens, day care centers and others lacked infra for differentiated education for gifted infants. Especially in 'the experience of differentiated education' for gifted infants, the three institutions showed a lower level than the normal level. Second, the teacher's demand for differentiated education for gifted infants in educational institutions were remarkably lower than the required level in all three institutions. The study expects that it could be used as the basic standards to seek for the direction of realization of customized and differentiated education that meet the developmental characteristics and educational demands for gifted infants in regular infant educational institutions.

  • This study investigated the relationship between science high school teachers' beliefs of gifted education and classroom practices. The data of this case study were collected from three science teachers who worked in a science high school through qualitative research methods such as interviews and classroom observations. The other various data related to science high school management and the teachers' teaching were collected and analyzed using the constant comparative method. The results of the study are as follows: the teacher of long period in-service experience in science high school had teacher-centered belief, and his classroom practices were matched with his beliefs. The teacher of short period in-service experience in science high school had student-centered belief, and her classroom practices were matched with her beliefs, also. The teacher of medium period in-service experience in science high school had student-centered belief, but her teacher-centered classroom practices were mismatched with her beliefs. From the results, it could conclude that school culture affects on teachers' classroom practices stronger than beliefs. The longer career period of science high school changed easier teachers' beliefs into knowledge education for university entrance examination removed from gifted education. To solve these problems, we suggest the needs of teacher education programs for science high school teachers.

  • The purpose of this study is analyzing 'observation and recommendation letter by teacher', which is being submitted to screen and enhance the utilization of gifted students in accordance with recently introduced gifted students observation, recommendation and screening system. For the purpose, this study will provide with objective securing plan of 'observation and recommendation letter by teacher' by developing an optimum evaluation model. The research findings were as follows: First, the result of analysis on the mathematically gifted students behavior characteristic as appeared in 'observation and recommendation letter by teacher' suggested that the recommending teachers have the tendency of giving superficial statement instead of giving concrete case description. When it was analyzed for frequency by the 'observation and recommendation letter by teacher' analysis framework devised by the author, the teachers showed the tendency of concentrating on specific questions. Meanwhile, there was a tendency that teachers concentrate on specific gifted behavior characteristic or area for which concrete case had been suggested. The reason is believed that such part is easy to observe and state while others are not, or, teachers did not judge the other part as the characteristic of gifted students. Second, the gifted students behavior characteristics as appeared in 'observation and recommendation letter by teacher' were made into scores by Rubric model. When the interrater reliability was analyzed based on these scores, the correlation coefficient of 1st scoring was .641. After a discussion session was taken and 2nd scoring was done 3 weeks later, the correlation coefficient of 2nd scoring increased to .732. The reason is believed that; i) the severity among scorers was adjusted by the discussion session after the 1st scoring, ii) the scorers established detail judgment standard on various situations which can appear because of the descriptive nature, and, (iii) they found a consensus on scoring for a new situation appeared. It implies that thorough understanding and application of scorers on evaluation model is as important as the development of optimum model for the differentiation of mathematically gifted elementary students.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a math test for identification of the mathematically gifted on the basis of their math creative problem solving ability and to evaluate the goodness of the test. Especially, testing reliability and validity of scoring method on the basis of fluency only for evaluation of math creative problem solving ability was one of the main purposes. Ten closed math problems and 5 open math problems were developed requiring math thinking abilities such as intuitive insight, organization of information, inductive and deductive reasoning, generalization and application, and reflective thinking. The 10 closed math test items of Type I and the 5 open math test items of Type II were administered to 1,032 Grade 7 students who were recommended by their teachers as candidates for gifted education programs. Students' responses were scored by math teachers. Their responses were analyzed by BIGSTEPS and 1 parameter model of item analyses technique. The item analyses revealed that the problems were good in reliability, validity, item difficulty and item discriminating power even when creativity was scored based on the single criteria of fluency. This also confirmed that the open problems which are less-defined, less-structured and non-entrenched were good in measuring math creative problem solving ability of the candidates for math gifted education programs. In addition, it was found that the math creative problem solving tests discriminated applicants for the two different gifted educational institutions.

  • The study aims to analyze teachers' perception of the "personality" area, which can be subjective in the in-depth interview process of selecting gifted children and is easily shunned due to its weak immediate effect. To this end, First, when asked about their difficulties as gifted teachers, many of them answered "professionalism and workload" and cited personality as the most important area to address in-depth interviews in selecting gifted students. It also recognized that personality interviews are necessary for the most basic virtues of education and social contribution, and cited cooperation, consideration, and concession as the sub-components to be dealt with in the personality interview. It was necessary to check whether each student's capabilities were evaluated in a variety of ways in an in-depth interview of the teacher's observing and recommending system. And it needed to be supplemented by in-depth observations such as the development of a valid question, camp or debate in the evaluation of the personality area. In order to reflect the needs of the education field, it will be necessary to supplement the personality interview in the gifted children's selection. And there is also a need to continue to study how to guide the personality education of already selected gifted children.
