  • Geumgang canal is planned to connect Geumgang lake with Saemangeum lake to accelerate desalinization and dilute polluted water to improve water quality in Saemangeum lake. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of water quality on Geumgang lake by diversion of its lake flow to Saemangeum lake. WASP5 model was used to estimate water quality of Geumgang lake. Model calibration and verification were done for water quality data for 2001 and 2002. Water quality concentrations in Geumgang lake were simulated for 4 scenarios, which were considered whether the Geumgang canal is built or not. As a result of simulations, there was little impact on water quality in Geumgang lake, though a little of the Geumgang lake flow diverted to Saemangeum lake. As the Geumgang canal is planned to divert the Geumgang water flow which were discharged into the sea through sluice gates when canal is not built, it is thought that there will be little change by diversion of water flow.

  • Mt. Geumgang has been a scenic spot representing the Korean peninsula since the Joseon Dynasty, and became a symbol of inter-Korean exchanges with the Gaesong Industrial Complex after the division of the South and North. Mt. Geumgang Tour Course is divided into the Inner-Geumgang (Naegeumgang) and the Outer-Geumgang (Oegeumgang). It was common for the Mt. Geumgang tour route during the Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese Imperialization period to enter the Inner-Geumgang, near Seoul, and come to the East Sea through the Outer-Geumgang. However, the tour route starting from Goseong was utilized for the Mt. Geumgang tour course operated by Hyundai. Because North Korea opened only the Outer-Geumgang area. North Korea has only opened some of its tour courses to Hyundai, but if Geumgang tourism is resumed in the future, there is a high possibility that it will be opened further, such as opening some sections of the Inner-Geumgang in 2007. In this case, it is necessary to connect additional transportation networks to access Inner-Geumgang from South Korea. The best alternative was the restoration of the Mt. Geumgang Railway. However, considering the fact that the reconstruction of the Mt. Geumgang Railway can not be completed due to the construction of the Imnam Dam, it is the most realistic alternative to restore Route 31 connecting Yanggu and Geumgang-eup. As a result of the analysis of road connecting Inner-Geumgang, three routes were confirmed. All of which were adjacent to the existing National Route 31. These routes passing through Dutayeon and Mundeung-ri and joining the Route 31 from Inje. Considering road length, topography characteristics, and military facility layout, it seems that the connection of 'Dutaeyun - Mundeung - Geumgang' is a realistic alternative connecting from South Korea to Inner-Geumgang.

  • In this study we develop mathematical tools for measuring the Geumgang Ratio and we call them Geumgang Ratio Calipers. Also we show a teaching method for ratio through experimental mathematics. With Geumgang Ratio Calipers students measure the Geumgang Ratio in their bodies, materials for everyday life and the Sukgulam. Through this activity, students obtained an interest in mathematics and gained a positive attitude for mathematics.

  • This study tried to reconstruct paleovegetation environments during the late Holocene with pollen analysis from archeological trenches at the right bank of Geumgang in Sejong-si. The lower hills was dominantly covered with pine trees, while alder trees and hygrophytes extended on the floodplain since 2,000yr BP. The pollen composition of Alnus dominance in the floodplain during the times is different from the general charateristics of Korean peninsula. Such a phenomenon is thought to be influenced by the fluvial process on the floodplain in the middle reaches of Geumgang around Sejong-si. Mihocheon and some tributaries join to Geumgang around Sejong-si, and the channel of Geumgang becomes narrow around the boundary between Sejong-si and Gongju-si. This narrow channel could attribute to the formation of extensive floodplain around Sejong-si. Moreover, human impacts such as agriculture appear continuously since 1,800yr BP.

  • After the artificial barrage was constructed in 1990s, the Geumgang estuary has been experiencing considerable changes in nature as well as in socioeconomic and culture in the vicinity villages. In order to understand how the change of estuarine environment bring about conflicts among the local communities, and resolve the conflicts, the research investigated the causes of the conflicts in the Geumgang estuary using in-depth and semi-structured interview method. 100 local people who have lived in the vicinity of Geumgang estuary for more than 30 years were selected for the interviews. Results of the research shows that local people's jobs determine the opinions about the estuary barrage and the way of estuarine management. Understanding environmental change and local conflicts helps to develop a sustainable and integrated estuary management system in the region.

  • Geumgang 2nd agricultural comprehensive development project is to develope the infrastructure in 43,000ha agricultural area. For this is the very large project, it is necessary to consider the plan of water use comprehensively. Therefore, watershed water balance model for this project has been developed and a variety of analysis has been carried out. And Geumgang Project Water Management System has been developed for the manager of irrigation facilities.

  • The normalization on the characteristics of water level change at the upstream gauging station was attempted according to the operation of drainage sluice gate of the Geumgang estuary dam. The characteristics were normalized by the analysis of water level change and by the linear-regression of the water level data measured at the inner station of Geumgang estuary dam and upstream gauging station. The results of normalization may be referred to the management of Geumgang estuary lake, the operation of pumping and drainage stations in the shore of the lake. The mean response time of water level change on Ibpo, Ganggyeong and Gyuam water level station were 39,81 and 160 minutes, when sluice gate was opened respectively. The mean velocity of surface wave, the mean displacement of water level change, the mean time of water level change and the mean rate of water level change varied largely depending on the location of gauging station and the characteristics of stream section of the water level gauging station.

  • The characteristics of Depth-Area-Duration (DAD) for 50 storms over the Geumgang river basin have been analysed in terms of various storm causes using the precipitation data during the period from 1984 to 2003. Results show that the ratio of the precipitation depth to duration, and the ratio of decrease in the precipitation depth to area are the largest in the case of the tropical cyclone. Storm maximization ratios are in the range 1.03 to 2.66 for the 50 selected heavy precipitation cases over Geumgang river basin, with the largest value for the tropical cyclone case, suggesting that the tropical cyclone could cause heavier precipitation than the other storms. In addition, the 24-hour probable maximum precipitation for the Geumgang river basin is estimated to be about 745 mm in the maximum precipitation area.

  • Discussion on North Korea as UN-REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation in developing countries) project target continues with a view to preventing deforestation and to securing CER(certified emission reduction) for South Korea. However, due to North Korea's political shutdown, it is hard to acquire information required for the REDD project registration. This research intends to acquire objective data using satellite images in the Mt. Geumgang. More than 20% of entire forested area were disappeared during the past two decades mainly due to conversion into agricultural farming land. Further, it is expected that persistent deforestation will go on. The reduction potential of the carbon emission is estimated as approximately 617,000 tCO2/year~663.000 tCO2/year. Thus, Mt. Geumgang is considered as realistic REDD target, which is attractive to South Korea, given that the obligation to reduce greenhouse gas emission is likely to be imposed upon the country. Further, political and social benefits due to reduced military conflict make Mt. Geumgang as UN-REDD project target invaluable.
