A Study on the Meaning of '極' of Cheon-gi[天機] and '克' of In-sa[人事] in the Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) - Focusing on the usage of '明明德' and '新民' in the Daxue - (『동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)』의 천기(天機)의 '극(極)'과 인사(人事)의 '극(克)'의 의미에 대한 고찰 - 『대학(大學)』의 '명명덕(明明德)', '신민(新民)'의 용례(用例)를 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : To examine the meaning of 'geuk(極)' and 'geuk(克)' of Cheon-gi and Insa respectively, for better translation of the contents and to understand the structure of the Donguisusebowon cosmology. Methods : The meanings of the characters '極' and '克' based on examples in the Daxue were examined together with content-related books such as the Shujing and the Shijing. Related concepts such as Taiji and Huangji were investigated as well. Results & Conclusions : Through investigation of the character usages and contexts in the Daxue, the archetypes of the two characters '極' and '克' were discovered. Based on these findings, the characteristics of Cheon-gi and Insa were thoroughly studied, which enabled better understanding of the structure of the world view that has been created by their integration. 'Geuk(極)' refers to Cheon-gi as the open world wherein all beings of different horizons are connected through a common principle. 'Geuk(克)' refers to Insa as an individual world that could be fully established by manifestation of one's moral abilities that lie within everybody. The two worlds integrate with each other, becoming two poles of the world humans belong to, while the human heart, in correspondence to these two worlds, create two poles within themselves, of which one pursues the public world while the other rejects the personal.

A Study on the Bul-woo-heon-ga by Jeong Geuk-in (정극인의 <불우헌가>에 나타난 시조성 연구)

  • Jeong Geuk-in was a poet of the early Joseon period. He lived for 45 years before Hangeul was published and 35 years afterwards. So, he wrote poetry both in Chinese and Korean. He was a creative writer who wrote Korean poems and songs. There were only a few works written in Korean including and before him. His Korean poems are , and . He created Korean poems and songs by unifying three literary forms of Sijo, Gyeong-gi-che-ga and Gasa. This study was intended to examine written in Korean. For the study, the form of the Bul-woo-heon-ga was analyzed and it was considered as Saseolsijo (a form of sijo with no restrictions on the length of the first two verses) for genre classification. However, it is generally thought that the Saseolsijo appeared in the seventeenth century. Therefore, this study is to explain the reason why Bul-woo-heon-ga is included in Saseolsijo. Another problem is that the writer of Bul-woo-heon-ga is not Jeong Geul-in, because of the fact that the speaker who appears in Bul-woo-heon-ga admired Jeong Geuk-in. In general, people do not admire themselves. As Jeong Geuk-in is a subject to be admired in the book, it is thought that the writer of the book is considered as one of his pupils or friends.

Two aspects of transforming ShimChungJeon for modern times (근대 시기 <심청전> 극적 변용의 두 양상 -잡극 <심청왕후전>과 시나리오 <효녀 심청전>을 중심으로-)

  • This thesis explores how JobGeuk ShimChungWangWhoJeon and the Devoted daughter ShimChungJeon scenario have transformed ShimChungJeon, a notable work of Pansori literature, dramatically for modern times. By analyzing the adapter's consciousness and changing direction in these two works, it was found that ShimChungJeon was tailored to audiences in the 1900s. JobGeuk and the scenario are attempts to transform ShimChungJeon to meet cultural needs in the 21st century and to make the works appealing to the public. The aspects of the transformation of JobGeuk ShimChungWangWhoJeon are 1) reinforcement of logical causality, 2) weakening the humor and simultaneously emphasizing the work's surreal nature, and 3) dramatic expression by song. The aspects of the change in direction of the Devoted daughter ShimChungJeon scenario are 1)the insertion of a new narrative, 2)trying to evoke both humor and tragic sadness, 3)seeking newness with the reassignment of time and events. JobGeuk ShimChungWangWhoJeon is the first example of the transformation of ShimChungJeon's dramatic style and Devoted daughter ShimChungJeon is the first transformation of its scenario. These two works show how ShimChungJeon can be adapted to modern times and new cultures, and how ShimChungJeon can be made relevant and be enjoyed by the public regardless of the era.
