  • The purpose of this study was evaluated physiological activity effect of organic germanium in culture broth of germanium-fortified Tricholoma matsutake mycelium and germanium-fortified yeast. Proliferation Tricholoma matsutake mycelium and yeast was inhibited by addition of germanium. Contents of organic germanium in Tricholoma matsutake mycelium and yeast was increased in dose-dependent manner. And low concentration(1,000 ppm) of germanium in mycelium was almost changed organic germanium. In the result of antioxidant activity as SOD-like activity, contents of total polyphenol compound and electron donating ability, activity of germanium-fortified Tricholoma matsutake mycelium was higher than that of germanium-fortified yeast. To evaluate of antitumor effects in vitro, we examined nitric oxide production of Raw 264,7 cell and cytotoxicity of HT1080 cell by MTT assay. Nitric oxide production of germanium-fortified Tricholoma matsutake mycelium was shown low level in low concentration(1,000 ppm) than other groups. The anticancer effect of germanium-fortified Tricholoma matsutake mycelium on HT 1080 cell was indicated a strong inhibitory effect in low concentration(1,000 ppm). These results suggest that organic germanium in culture broth of germanium-fortified Tricholoma matsutake mycelium has valuable physiological activities as antioxidant and anticancer effect, and it was higher than that of germanium-fortified yeast.

  • We present a new way to create a thermally stable, highly strained germanium (Ge) optical resonator using a novel Ge-on-dual-insulators substrate. Instead of using a conventional way to undercut the oxide layer of a Ge-on-single-insulator substrate for inducing tensile strain in germanium, we use thin aluminum oxide as a sacrificial layer. By eliminating the air gap underneath the active germanium layer, we achieve an optically insulating, thermally conductive, and highly strained Ge resonator structure that is critical for a practical germanium laser. Using Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence experiments, we prove that the novel geometry of our Ge resonator structure provides a significant improvement in thermal stability while maintaining good optical confinement.

  • The essential factor of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), an acute lung injury accompanied commonly by sepsis syndrome is accumulation of neutrophils in lung tissue. The study attempted to confirm whether a lung injury would be decreased with the anti-inflammatory effect of germanium by the treated germanium prior to the development of ARDS and whether nitric oxide influence in suppressing a lung injury. Test groups were divided in the following structure for experiment; CON that has been administered with sodium chloride to airway, LPS administered with endotoxin for 5 hours in the same amount and 5 hours of endotoxin administered Ge+LPS following 1 hours of pre-treated germanium. The result of a test using experimental animals, infilteration of neutrophils (p<0.001) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was significantly decreased, the structure of lung tissue was preserved relatively well, and much neutrophils with distinct positive were observed on tunel staining which showed increase of apoptotic neutrophils in the pre-treated germanium group compare to the endotoxin administrated group. In observation of ultrastructural changes of cell in BALF, phagocytic alveolar macrophage was increased in alveolar space, the nucleus of most engulfed neutrophils were condensed, and some apoptosis neutrophils appears to be DNA fragmentation and effacement of cellular organelles were found in intercellular matrix in the pre-treated germanium group. However, the nitric oxide showed increase in all the groups excluding CON, and the nitric oxide effect such as degranulation diminishing of mast cells and apoptosis increase of neutrophils in the pre-treated group only. The situation appears that there was change in internal environment of the experimental animal by the pre-treated germanium before the nitric oxide is produced and the anti-inflammatory effect activated the pre-processed germanium by nitric oxide which activated following the change. Therefore, the nitric oxide created from macrophage in accordance with the pre-treated germanium appears to influence in alleviating a lung injury. Accordingly, acute lung injury is alleviated by the anti-inflammatory effect of germanium such as inhibition of neutrophils migration, induction of neutrophil apoptosis and increase of phagocytic function of phagocyte, and the nitric oxide produced from activated macrophage by germanium would influence in suppressing a lung injury.

  • We developed a Ag nanowire patterning technique using a water-soluble sacrificial layer. To form a water-soluble sacrificial layer, germanium was deposited on the substrate and then water-soluble germanium oxide was simply formed by thermal oxidation of germanium using a conventional furnace. The formation of Ag nanowire patterns with various line and space arrangements was successfully demonstrated using this patterning process. The main advantage of this patterning technique is that it does not use a strong acid etchant, thereby preventing damage to the Ag nanowire during the patterning process.

  • This study was carried out to determine the antimutagenic effect of soybean sprouts cultured in water containing germanium by Ames test and SOS chromotest. Germanium significantly inhibited the mutagenicity induced by aflatoxin B$_1$ (AFB$_1$) in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 by Ames test, and 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (4-NQO) in SOS chromotest. Juice from germanium treated soybean sprouts (GTS) inhibited 57∼75% mutagenicity induced by AFB$_1$, N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and 4-NQO compared with 20∼48% inhibition rate of control soybean sprouts (germanium non-treated soybean sprouts, GNTS) in the Ames test. Also, methanol extracts from GTS inhibited 65% mutagenicity induced by AFB$_1$ in Salmonella typhimurium TA100, and 51% mutagenicity by 4-NQO in SOS chromotest. Therefore, it suggests that GTS has strong potential antimutagenic effect.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate an efficacy about activation on macrophage, using model that measured cell viability, nitric oxide (NO), iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) expression and tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$) on Raw 264.7 cells following treatment of Germanium-fortified Yeast in 0, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, $200\;{\mu}g/ml$ and the same concentration of dried yeast without germanium. Cell viability (%) and NO produced in activated-macrophage were dose-dependant, a significant increase of the cell viability (132.5%) and NO in $10\;{\mu}g/ml$ (p < 0.05). Increase in iNOS level was in $10\;{\mu}g/ml$. $TNF-{\alpha}$ was produced dose-dependant, e.g. in activated-macrophage with a significant increase of the $TNF-{\alpha}$ in 5 and $10\;{\mu}g/ml$ (p < 0.05). Therefore, Germanium-fortified Yeast had an efficacy of NO mediated iNOS and $TNF-{\alpha}$ production by activated macrophage. This result showed that Germanium-fortified Yeast induced activation of cellular immunity, returned to normalcy on injured immune system and procured anticancer system by activation of macrophage, which was important in immune and anticancer function.

  • The separation of germanium and gallium ion with metal oxide was introduced into the development of $^{68}Ge/^{68}Ga$ generator. Germanium and gallium within mixed solution were respectively separated by using a liquid-liquid extraction and a column chromatographic method. The separation of Ge within high concentrated hydrochloric and sulfuric acid was conducted by the extraction to $CCl_4$ and the back-extraction to 0.05 M HCl. An optimum condition of the extraction by $CCl_4$ was in 5~7 M HCl and efficiency was around 80%. The gallium was selectively separated by using $Al_2O_3$ among metal oxides as sorbents from the mixed solution in 0.04~0.10 M HCl condition.

  • Simple fabrication of a powdered Ge-reduced graphene oxide (Ge-rGO) composite via spray pyrolysis and reduction is introduced herein. Successful incorporation of the rGO nanosheets with Ge hindered the aggregation of Ge and conferred enhanced structural stability to the composite by alleviating the mechanical stress associated with drastic volume changes during repeated cycling. The Li-ion storage performance of Ge-rGO was compared with that of powdered Ge metal. The reversible discharge capacity of Ge-rGO at the $200^{th}$ cycle was $748mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at a current density of $1.0A\;g^{-1}$ and Ge-rGO showed a capacity of $375mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ even at a high current density of $5.0A\;g^{-1}$. The excellent performance of Ge-rGO is attributed to the structural robustness, enhanced electrical conductivity, and formation of open channels between the rGO nanosheets, which facilitated electrolyte penetration for improved Li-ion diffusion.

  • In the present study, six silicone rubber doped by tellurium borate oxides were fabricated using the casting method. The densities of the fabricated silicon rubber-doped by tellurium borate oxides samples were measured using the Archimedes Method. Moreover, the linear attenuation coefficient of silicone rubber doped tellurium borate oxides samples was evaluated experimentally using the hyper pure germanium, and the recorded linear attenuation coefficient values were affirmed using the theoretical Phy-X program. The experimental measurements were performed using the narrow beam transmission method with radioactive isotopes Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60 with energies of 59, 661, 1173, and 1332 keV. The linear attenuation coefficient values showed an enhancement by 4.73 times, 1.20 time, 1.17, time, and 1.17 time, respectively at gamma photon energies of 59, 661, 1173, and 1332 keV, when the TeO2 concentration increased in the fabricated composites from 0 to 50 wt%. The enhancement of the linear attenuation coefficient values has a positive effect on the transmission rate values where the half-value thickness and transmission rate were decreased accompanied by an increase in the RPE.
