In order to cultivate the soybean sprout fortified with organogermanium, we observed growth characteristics and germanium content of soybean sprout watered with the aqueous organogermanium, Ge-132[bis(2-Carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide)]. Soybean sprout did not show difference in growth when treated with different times and frequencies of organogermanium or different types of germanium. Growth of Orialtae soybean sprout was smaller in diameter of hypocotyledonary axis and longer in total length than that of Danyeob soybean sprout. Three hour's soaking was better in growth than half an boar's treatment. Germanium absorbed by soybean sprout was greater in content in Danyeob soybean sprout than in Orialtae soybean sprout and highest at 20 ppm in water. Prolonged period and increased frequency in treatments with organic germanium resulted in increase of germanium uptake. Germanium content in soybean sprout was greater with treatment of organic germanium than with inorganic germanium.

This study was carried out to evaluate the nutritional value of soybean sprouts cultured in water with germanium. In the germanium treated soybean sprouts (GSP), the contents of moisture and ash were higher than those of control group (germanium non-treated soybean sprouts), with 88.7~90.2% and 16~24%, respectively. The contents of dietary fiber, vitamin C and total phenol of GSP were also higher than those of control group especially with more than 20~40% in total phenol being contained. Minerals of soybean sprouts were considerably increased during S-day cultivation. Of minerals, the contents of calcium and iron in GSP were higher than in the control. In particular there was no germanium in control group, but on the other hand, GSP had germanium of 159 ppm. Therefore, it may be suggested that, soybean sprout with germanium is better than soybean sprout without germanium in terms of nutrition.
Germanium is found in a range of minerals and ores and is present in foods including beans, tomato juice, oysters, tuna and garlic. Germanium is a non-metallic element, which can exist in valence states of 2 and 4. Clinical trials and use in private practices for more than a decade have demonstrated organic germanium's efficacy in treating serious disease including cancer, arthritis and senile osteoporosis. But it was rarely reported that inorganic germanium has biological properties. STB-BM contains mineral complex, rare earth elements and a little amount of Inorganic germanium. The experiment was carried out the anti-obesity effect. To investigate anti-obesity effect of STB-BM, we measured the effect of body weight, fat weight (subcutaneous fat, epididymal fat, visceral fat, kidney fat and total fat) and serum biochemical level in rats fed high fat diets. STB-BM 35 mg/kg suppressed the increasing ratio of body weight, epididymal fat weight, visceral fat weight, total fat weight, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol (p<0.05).
In this study, for development of functional sprouts, we have investigated the change of antioxidant activity and quantity of vitamin C, germanium and selenium according to the addition of vitamin C, germanium oxide and selenium oxide on the during cultivation of various sprouts. We were cultivated the sprouts using water solution added vitamin C, germanium oxide and selenium oxide on the system of cultivation instrument. Analysis of quantity of vitamin C on control group and treatment group were conducted by HPLC. Quantity of germanium and selenium were analyzed by ICP-MS(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer), and antioxidant activities were checked by DPPH method. As a result, quantity of vitamin C, germanium and selenium on the treatment groups have increased tendency compared to the control group. And antioxidant activity of treatment groups showed increasing tendency compared to the control group.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary germanium biotite supplementation on egg quality and fecal noxious gas content in laying hens. One hundred and forty-four 40-wk-old, ISA Brown layers were used in this experiment. Dietary treatments were 1) CON(control diet), 2) GB0.5(control diet + 0.5% germanium biotite), 3) GB1.0 (control diet + 1.0% germanium biotite) and 4) GB1.5(control diet + 1.5% germanium biotite). Hen-day egg Production and egg shell breaking strength were not influenced by germanium biotite supplementation. However, egg weight decrease as the level of germanium biotite supplementation increased in the diets increased(Cubic effect, p<0.02). Eggshell thickness, yolk color and yolk index were not influenced by garmanium biotite supplementation. Serum triglyceride concentration as dietary germanium biotite increased (linear effect P<0.02; quadratic effect, p<0.05). Dietary supplementation of germanium biotite reduced fecal NH$_3$-N concentration (P<0.01), propionic acid(P<0.01), butyric acid( P<0.05) and acetic aicd(P<0.01) concentrations in the feces. In conclusion, the results of this experiment indicated that dietary germanium biotite supplementation did not affect egg shell quality, but reduced fecal NH$_3$-N concentration.

The objectives of this experiment were to study the growth and development of fruiting body of the two Ganoderma lucidum isolates on log of the soft wood Paraserianthes falcataria and the hard wood Shorea sp., and determination of organic germanium and crude ganoderic acid content of the fruiting body produced. The two Ganoderma lucidum isolates used were one Indonesian native (Indonesia isolate) and another isolate was purchased from Fungi Perfecti, USA (commercial isolate). The development and quality of the primordium and fruiting body of the mushroom, in general, were influenced by the isolates used. The types of wood, however, had no effect on the quality of the primordium and fruiting body produced. The Indonesian isolate produced better fruiting body compared to that of the commercial isolate. The development of fruiting body from primordium, however, was low for the two isolates tested. In general, only about one third of the primordium developed further into mature fruiting bodies, except for the commercial isolate grown on the soft wood medium in which more than 60% of the primordium developed into mature fruiting body. Apart from producing normal fruiting body, the commercial isolate also produced an abnormal one, which had a white mature pileus, whereas the normal one was brownish red. The organic germanium concentration of the fruiting body produced on the hard wood, in general, was higher than that of grown on the soft wood. The fruiting body from commercial isolate had higher organic germanium concentration compared to that of Indonesian isolate in both wood types. The two isolates used, however, had almost the same value of the crude ganoderic acid concentration in both types of wood tested. The Indonesian isolate had higher total yield of both organic germanium and crude ganoderic acid of the fruiting body produced compared to that of the commercial isolate.
In order to increase the content of germanium in ginseng adventitious roots, the effects of chelating agents on germanium content and root growth were investigated in the submerged cultures of ginseng adventitious roots. Chelating agents such as citric acid, oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, EDTA (Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid) or EGTA (Ethylene glycol-bis $({\beta}-aminoethylether)-tetraacetic$ acid) were administrated in the submerged culture of ginseng root containing 50 ppm $GeO_2$. After 6 weeks of cultivation, fresh weight, germanium and saponin contents in the roots were analyzed. Among chelating agents, addition of 1.0mM phosphoric acid was found to be best for germanium accumulation. Under this condition, germanium content increased 1.4 times as compared to that of the control. The germanium content in the adventitious roots also increased with addition of EDTA or EGTA, while they inhibited the growth of ginseng adventitious root. Citric and oxalic acids were not effective for increasing germanium content in adventitious roots. As the results, it suggests that the phosphoric acid can be proved as the optimal agent for the enhancement of germanium accumulation in ginseng adventitious roots. These results can be served as a guideline for the mass production of ginseng adventitious roots containing germanium by large-scale production.
Ammonium biflouride ($NH_4HF_2$) digestion was studied for germanium analysis in rock and sediment by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). QLO-1 and SDO-1 are used for reference materials from USGS. Sediment, basalt and ball clay for GeoPT were chosen as real samples. The loss of germanium in open vessel digestion was well known which can be caused by easy transformation to volatile compounds. But ammonium bifluoride digestion could suppress loss of germanium in open vessel digestion. Germanium recovery was not influenced by hydrogen peroxide with ammonium bifluoride digestion. Furthermore, the new method was simple and rapid in germanium analysis by ICP/MS. MDL(method detection limit) was 0.015 ${\mu}g/g$ and germanium recovery was 106~128%.

In order to obtain the basic information for agricultural utilization of Germanium(Ge), the growth characteristics and the germanium uptake by water celery were investigated at different concentration of germanium in soil. This experiment was carried out in the Wagner pot(1 $5,000^{-1}a$). Germanium concentrations in soil for water celery cultivation were maintained at 0.26, 25.0, 62.5, and 125.0 mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively. The treatment of over Ge 25.0 mg $kg^{-1}$ in the soil led to germanium phytotoxicity such as reduction of plant height and fresh weight. The contents of germanium in water celery were increased with the increase of germanium concentration in the soil. When water celery was cultivated from soil maintained with Ge 25.0 and 62.5 mg $kg^{-1}$, its germanium contents in plant were 89.9 and 371.6 mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively. Then, the efficiency of germanium uptake of water celery in Ge 25.0 and 62.5 mg $kg^{-1}$ maintained plots was 1.7 and 2.4%, respectively. When water celery was cultivated from soil maintained with Ge 25.0, 62.5 and 125.0 mg $kg^{-1}$, its content of amino acid was found to be 89.8, 198.4, and 318.2 mg $g^{-1}$, respectively. To investigate the effect of N fertilizer application in uptake of germanium by water celery, these were treated with nontreatment, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 times of N application based on soil testing for cultivation of water celery. However, the amount of the N fertilizer application did not affect the contents of germanium in the water celery. When water celery was cultivated from soil maintained with two kinds of inorganic and organic germanium 50 mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively, the content of germanium were 24.2 mg $kg^{-1}$ in the Ge-132 treatment and 11.8 mg $kg^{-1}$ in the $GeO_2$ treatment.

We present a new way to create a thermally stable, highly strained germanium (Ge) optical resonator using a novel Ge-on-dual-insulators substrate. Instead of using a conventional way to undercut the oxide layer of a Ge-on-single-insulator substrate for inducing tensile strain in germanium, we use thin aluminum oxide as a sacrificial layer. By eliminating the air gap underneath the active germanium layer, we achieve an optically insulating, thermally conductive, and highly strained Ge resonator structure that is critical for a practical germanium laser. Using Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence experiments, we prove that the novel geometry of our Ge resonator structure provides a significant improvement in thermal stability while maintaining good optical confinement.
