  • The various hatch patterns supplied by CAD systems are not sufficient for the preparation of geotechnical map and their use can often mislead to a wrong map interpretation. To use, edit, and communicate the geotechnical map information with ease among many CAD user, unified drawing file format is suggested. New hatch patterns are designed and suggested to use with geotechincal jobs.

  • On behalf of hazard mitigation, cases of investigation methods on levee are described. In general, failures of levee are caused by piping, water leakage through ground under the levee in Kimpo, Ilsan etc. Several phenomena against levees should be protected through consideration of analysis and quality control stage during construction. In this paper, protection methods against failures should be investigated by case studies.

  • SPT-Uphole method was introduced for the evaluation of near subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) profile. In SPT-Uphole method, SPT (Standard Penetration Test) which is common in geotechnical site investigation was used as a source and several surface geophones in line were used as receivers. 1D shearwave velocity profile can be obtained in the manner of downhole method, Vs distribution map which is the triangular shape around the boring point can be developed by tomography inversion. To obtain the exact travel time information of shear wave component, a procedure using the magnitude summation of vertical and horizontal components was used based on the evaluation of particle motion at the surface. It was verified that proposed method could give reliable Vs distribution map through the numerical study using the FEM (Finite Element Method) model. Finally, SPT-Uphole method was performed and the feasibility of proposed method was verified in the field.

  • Many studies have been carried out on monitoring the target by cooperating a drone with remote sensors recently. This monitoring system uses static sensors to measure environmental data and drones to collect measured data. In geotechnical engineering, inspectors go around measuring the safety of construction site and it is impractical to compose a network among numerous sensors in terms of the cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose a data collection system based on interaction between a drone and a few sensors that are installed around the target structure for geotechnical projects. Through experimental results, we also verify the availability and the time and cost efficiency of the proposed system comparing with using inspectors.

  • We measured potential waveform of load, displacement, micro electric signal generated by rock and mortar fracture using PXI A/D Converter. The rock type used for measurement was used granite, limestone and sandstone, and mortar specimen. we made measuring equipment of physical properties to confirm basic information of physical properties, measured physical properties of rock engineering, electric resistivity and seismic velocity. Potential waveform system was built using PXI A/D Converter and measured potential waveform of load, displacement, micro-electric signal generated using this during uniaxial compressive test by the specimen finished such test of physical properties. Using the saturated rock and mortar specimen, micro electric signal increased, and It didn't increase a signal in dried rock and mortar specimen according as load and strain rate increases. But signal also increased in saturated or dried specimen in case of sandstone. It was possible to check the close correlation relationship the signal and fracture behavior by a compressive load as the signal of fracture position was increased bigger than the other position. It was also possible to check the correlation relationship between physical properties and micro geo-electric signal.

  • There have been vast amounts of the site investigation data from the domestic construction sites every year and various national research institutes are constructing the database for the site investigation data. According to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the database for the site investigation has been constructed for covering 154,000 individual boreholes since the computerization project for the geotechnical information started at 2000. It is considered to be high time to evaluate the reliability of the stored DB so that the current DB should be utilized to the various fields related to the planning and site investigation of the construction activities. Therefore, the precision of the stored site investigation data was evaluated via normal distribution for more active sharing and utilization. As a preliminary evaluation of the precision, the locations of the encountered strata from two different sites were analyzed. After the precision of the stored data is determined, the level of reliability of the each category of the stored geotechnical information would be determined and the users would be able to decide which information could be utilized.

  • During construction of a tunnel and underground structure, it is very important to acquire accurate information of the rock mass will be excavated. In this study, the drill monitoring method was applied for rapid prediction of geological condition ahead of the tunnel face. Mechanical data(speed, torque and feed pressure) from drilling process using a hydraulic drilling machine were analyzed to assess rock mass characteristics. Rock mass information acquired during excavation from drilling monitoring were compared with results from horizontal boring and tunnel seismic profiling(TSP). As the result, the drilling monitoring method is useful to assess rock mass condition such as geological structures and physical properties ahead of the tunnel face.

  • Underground lifelines such as water supply/sewer pipe, power cable and gas pipe are indispensable facilities to the life of urban society. These lifelines have been constructed long time ago and buried positioning information is not precisely recorded. Moreover, they have been concentrated on the narrow area and are complicatedly entangled in 3-dimension. In the fourth industrial revolution, a 3-dimensional visualization for underground lifelines is strongly required, and a database (D/B) with precise positioning information should be preceded. In this study, image processing technology for precise positioning of underground buried lifelines is introduced, which is able to build the database more accurately, efficiently and practically.

  • Ground subsidence mainly occurs in urban areas with high population density, so it is necessary to clearly identify the cause of occurrence and prepare in advance. The main cause of ground subsidence is reported to be the creation of cavities in the ground due to damage to underground pipes, but the property information and influencing factors of underground pipes to predict and prepare for ground subsidence are not properly established. Therefore, in this study, factors showing a significant correlation with the occurrence of ground subsidence were selected among the underground facility property information and a regression equation was proposed through logistic regression analysis. For this purpose, data on underground structures and ground subsidence history information in the target area were collected, and the target area was divided into girds of 100m x 100m in size using QGIS. The underground facility attribute information and ground subsidence history information contained within the gird were extracted. Then, preprocessing was performed to construct a dataset and correlation analysis was performed. As a result, factors excluding the year of sewer pipes and communication pipes and the average depth of communication pipes, heat pipes, and gas pipes were found to have a significant correlation with ground subsidence. In addition, a regression equation for whether ground subsidence occurred in the target area is proposed through logistic regression analysis.

  • The deterioration of underground facilities, disturbance of the ground due to underground development activities, and changes in ground water can cause ground subsidence accidents in the urban areas. The investigation on the geotechnical and hydraulic factors affecting the ground subsidence accident is very significant to predict the ground subsidence risk in advance. In this study, an analysis DB was constructed through 3D ground modeling to utilize the currently operating geotechnical survey information DB and ground water behavior information for risk prediction. Additionally, using these results, the relationship between the actual ground subsidence occurrence history and ground conditions and ground water level changes was confirmed. Furthermore, the methodology used to visualize the risk of ground subsidence was presented by reconstructing the engineering characteristics of the soil presented according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in the existing geotechnical survey information into the internal erosion sensitivity of the soil, Based on the result, it was confirmed that the ground in the area where the ground subsidence occurred consists of more than 40% of sand (SM, SC, SP, SW) vulnerable to internal erosion. In addition, the effect of the occurrence frequency of ground subsidence due to the change in ground water level is also confirmed.
