  • A mathematical model is developed to predict the fatigue notch factor of butt welds subject to number of parameters such as weld geometry, residual stresses under dynamic combined loading conditions (tensile and bending). Linear elastic fracture mechanics, finite element analysis, dimensional analysis and superposition approaches are used for the modelling. The predicted results are in good agreement with the available experimental data. As a result, scatters of the fatigue data can be significantly reduced by plotting S-N curve as ($S{\cdot}K_f$) vs. N.

  • The increased awareness of electromagnetic wave hazards has prompted studies on electromagnetic shielding using conductive materials in the construction industry. Previous studies have explored the effects of the types of conductive materials and their mix proportions on the electromagnetic shielding performance; however, there has been insufficient research on the effect of the geometry of the conductive materials on the electromagnetic shielding performance. Therefore, in this study, the dependence of the electromagnetic shielding performance on the cross-sectional geometry, diameter and length of fibers was investigated. The results showed that the electromagnetic shielding performance improved when the fiber length increased or the diameter decreased, but the effect of the cross-sectional geometry of the fibers was smaller than the effect of the fiber spacing factor.

  • Relatively little information is available regarding the correlation between wood and veneer quality, especially for Samama wood, an endemic wood species in eastern Indonesia. This study addresses the quality of 8 years old Samama wood and its effect on the veneer quality. Samama wood quality was determined by evaluating its specific gravity, moisture content, fiber dimensions, and microfibril angle from pith toward bark. Meanwhile, veneer quality was assessed by examining veneer thickness and lathe check characteristics. Geometry factor model was constructed to elaborate the quantities of lathe check from pith toward bark. Results show that fair variations of veneer thickness, ranging from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm, could be obtained from Samama wood. The quantity, depth, and length of lathe check were noticeably decreasing toward bark. Further, in the same manufacturing process, geometry factor was determined as the dominant factor over other wood properties in affecting the frequency of lathe checks from pith towards bark. These facts should be put into consideration in producing veneer from Samama wood. Moreover, these results enlighten the potential of Samama wood as plywood and other excellent veneer-based products.

  • The influence of two parameters on fatigue damage predictions of a variably loaded cantilever beam has been examined. The first parameter is the geometry of the cantilever beam and the weld connecting it to a rear panel. Variables of the geometry examined here include the cantilever length, the weld width on the critical cross-section and the angle of the critical cross-section. The second parameter is the safety factor, as set out by the Eurocode 3 standard. An analytical approach has been used to calculate the stresses at the critical cross-section and standard rainflow counting has been used for the extraction of the load cycles from the load history. The results here suggest that a change in the width and angle of the critical cross-section has a non-linear impact on the fatigue damage. The results also show that the angle of the critical cross-section has the biggest influence on the fatigue damage and can cause the weld to withstand fatigue better. The second parameter, the safety factor, is shown to have a significant effect on the fatigue damage calculation, whereby a slight increase in the endurance safety factor can cause the calculated fatigue damage to increase considerably.

  • Three dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to estimate the effect of shape parameters (plate width and thickness) on the stress intensity factor for crack in the integrally stiffened plate. Analysis was done for width ratios of 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and thickness ratios of 2, 3, 4, 6. Based on these results, an empirical equation of geometry factor is formulated as a function of crack length and thickness ratio.

  • The processing paper has devoted to the theory of the flow equations, the basic derivative procedure, the meaning of a valve flow coefficient $C_v$, the valve Reynolds R$R_{ev}$ and its application for liquid control valves, which applicable under the condition of a non-critical flow and the case of piping geometry factor $F_p$=1.0. However there is no information on the effects of fittings, a critical flow and the flow resistance coefficient of a valve equivalent to that of pipe which is conveniently used in the piping design. Since the piping systems of plants or ships generally contain various fittings such as expanders and reducers due to different size between pipes and valves and there may occur a critical flow, that a mass flowrate is maintained to be constant, due to the pressure drop in a piping when a liquid is initially maintainder ar a saturated temperature or at nearby corresponding to upstream pressure, system designer should have a knowledge of the effect to flow due to fittings and the critical flow phenomenon of a liquid. This study is performed to inform system designers with the critical flow phenomenon of a liquid, a valve resistance coefficient, a valve geometry factor and their applications.

  • This paper describes a methodology for determination of representative CANDU feeder geometry and the pressure drops between inlet/outlet header and fuel channel in the primary loop. A code, MEDOC, was developed based on this methodology and helps perform a calculation of equivalent feeder geometry for a selected channel group on the basis of feeder geometry data (fluid volume, mass flow rate, loss factor) and given property data pressure, quality, density) at inlet/outlet header. The equivalent feeder geometry calculated based on this methodology will be useful fur the transient thermohydraulic analysis of the primary heat transport system for the CANDU heavy water-cooled pressure tube reactor.
