An analytic solution to the mild-slope equation is derived for waves propagating over an axi-symmetric pit. The water depth inside the pit varies in proportion to a power of radial distance from the pit center. The governing equation is transformed into ordinary differential equations by using separation of variables, and the coefficients of the equations are transformed into explicit forms by using Hunt's (1979) approximate solution. Finally, by using the Frobenius series, the analytic solution is derived. Due to the feature of Hunt's equation, the present analytic solution is accurate in shallow and deep waters, while it is less accurate in intermediate depth water. The validity of the analytic solution is demonstrated by comparison with numerical solutions. The analytic solution is also used to examine the effects of pit geometry and relative depth on wave transformation.

In todays security industry, personal identification is also based on biometric. Biometric identification is performed basing on the measurement and comparison of physiological and behavioral characteristics, Biometric for recognition includes voice dynamics, signature dynamics, hand geometry, fingerprint, iris, etc. Iris can serve as a kind of living passport or living password. Iris recognition system is the one of the most reliable biometrics recognition system. This is applied to client/server system such as the electronic commerce and electronic banking from stand-alone system or networks, ATMs, etc. A new algorithm using nonlinear function in recognition process is proposed in this paper. An algorithm is proposed to determine the localized iris from the iris image received from iris input camera in client. For the first step, the algorithm determines the center of pupil. For the second step, the algorithm determines the outer boundary of the iris and the pupillary boundary. The localized iris area is transform into polar coordinates. After performing three times Wavelet transformation, normalization was done using sigmoid function. The converting binary process performs normalized value of pixel from 0 to 255 to be binary value, and then the converting binary process is compare pairs of two adjacent pixels. The binary code of the iris is transmitted to the by server. the network. In the server, the comparing process compares the binary value of presented iris to the reference value in the University database. Process of recognition or rejection is dependent on the value of Hamming Distance. After matching the binary value of presented iris with the database stored in the server, the result is transmitted to the client.

The bird strike simulation is a problem characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. It deals with nonlinear dynamics, complicated models of bird materials and geometry, as well as a plenty of possible boundary and initial conditions. In this complex field, uncertainty management plays an important role. This paper aims to assess the effect of input uncertainty of bird strike analysis on the impact behavior of the leading edge of the WIG(Wing in Ground Effect) craft obtained with finite element analysis using LS-DYNA 3D. The uncertainties of the bird strike simulation arise due to imprecision or lack of information, due to variability or scatter, or as a consequence of model simplification. These uncertain parameters are represented by fuzzy numbers with their membership functions quantifying an initial guess for the actual value of the model parameter. Using the transformation method as a special implementation of fuzzy arithmetic, the model can be analyzed with the intention of determining the influence of each uncertain parameter on the overall bird strike behavior.
Methods of Riemannian geometry has played an important role in the study of compact transformation groups. Every effective action of a compact Lie group on a differential manifold leaves a Riemannian metric invariant and the study of such actions reduces to the one involving the group of isometries of a Riemannian metric on the manifold which is, a priori, a Lie group under the compact open topology. Once an action of a compact Lie group is given an invariant metric is easily constructed by the averaging method and the Lie group is naturally imbedded in the group of isometries as a Lie subgroup. But usually this invariant metric has more symmetries than those given by the original action. Therefore the first question one may ask is when one can find a Riemannian metric so that the given action coincides with the action of the full group of isometries. This seems to be a difficult question to answer which depends very much on the orbit structure and the group itself. In this paper we give a sufficient condition that a subgroup action of a compact Lie group has an invariant metric which is not invariant under the full action of the group and figure out some aspects of the action and the orbit structure regarding the invariant Riemannian metric. In fact, according to our results, this is possible if there is a larger transformation group, containing the oringnal action and either having larger orbit somewhere or having exactly the same orbit structure but with an orbit on which a Riemannian metric is ivariant under the orginal action of the group and not under that of the larger one. Recently R. Saerens and W. Zame showed that every compact Lie group can be realized as the full group of isometries of Riemannian metric. [SZ] This answers a question closely related to ours but the situation turns out to be quite different in the two problems.
The purpose of this thesis is, through analysing the characteristics of the definitions in Korean school mathematics textbooks, to explore the levels of them and to make suggestions for definition - teaching as a mathematising activity, Definitions used in academic mathematics are rigorous. But they should be transformed into various types, which are presented in school mathematics textbooks, with didactical purposes. In this thesis we investigated such types of transformation. With the result of this investigation we tried to identify the levels of the definitions in school mathematics textbooks. And in school mathematics textbooks there are definitions which carry out special functions in mathematical contexts or situations. We can say that we understand those definitions, only if we also understand the functions of definitions in those contexts or situations. In this thesis we investigated the cases in school mathematics textbooks, when such functions of definition are accompanied. With the result of this investigation we tried to make suggestions for definition-teaching as an intellectual activity. To begin with we considered definition from two aspects, methods of definition and functions of definition. We tried to construct, with consideration about methods of definition, frame for analysing the types of the definitions in school mathematics and search for a method for definition-teaching through mathematization. Methods of definition are classified as connotative method, denotative method, and synonymous method. Especially we identified that connotative method contains logical definition, genetic definition, relational definition, operational definition, and axiomatic definition. Functions of definition are classified as, description-function, stipulation-function, discrimination-function, analysis-function, demonstration-function, improvement-function. With these analyses we made a frame for investigating the characteristics of the definitions in school mathematics textbooks. With this frame we identified concrete types of transformations of methods of definition. We tried to analyse this result with van Hieles' theory about levels of geometry learning and the mathematical language levels described by Freudenthal, and identify the levels of definitions in school mathematics. We showed the levels of definitions in the geometry area of the Korean school mathematics. And as a result of analysing functions of definition we found that functions of definition appear more often in geometry than in algebra or analysis and that improvement-function, demonstration-function appear regularly after demonstrative geometry while other functions appear before demonstrative geometry. Also, we found that generally speaking, the functions of definition are not explained adequately in school mathematics textbooks. So it is required that the textbook authors should be careful not to miss an opportunity for the functional understanding. And the mathematics teachers should be aware of the functions of definitions. As mentioned above, in this thesis we analysed definitions in school mathematics, identified various types of didactical transformations of definitions, and presented a basis for future researches on definition teaching in school mathematics.
Unlike ordinary situations, deifinitions play a very important role in mathematics education in schools. Mathematical concepts have been mainly acquired by given definitions. However, according to didactical intentions, mathematics education in schools has employed mathematical concepts and definitions with less strict forms than those in pure mathematics. This research mainly discusses definitions used in geometry (promising) course in primary schools to cope with possibilities of creating misconception due to this didactical transformation. After analyzing problems with potential misconceptions, a survey was conducted $\underline{with}$ 80 primary school teachers in Jeju to investigate their recognitions in meaning of mathematical concepts in geometry and attitudes toward teaching. Most of the respondents answered they taught their students while they knew well about mathematical definitions in geometry but the respondents sometimes confused mathematical concepts of polygons and circles. Also, they were aware of problems in current mathematics textbooks which have explained figures in small topics (classes). Here, several suggestions are proposed as follows from analyzing teachers' recognitions and researches in mathematical viewpoints of definitions (promising) in geometric figures which have been adopted by current mathematics textbooks in primary schools from the seventh educational curriculum. First, when primary school students in their detailed operational stage studying figures, they tend to experience $\underline{a}$ collision between concept images acquired from activities to find out promising and concept images formed through promising. Therefore, a teaching method is required to lessen possibility of misconceptions. That is, there should be a communication method between defining conceptual definitions and Images. Second, we need to consider how geometric figures and their elements in primary school textbooks are connected with fundamental terminologies laying the foundation for geometrical definitions and more logical approaches should be adopted. Third, the consistency with studying geometric figures should be considered. Fourth, sorting activities about problems in coined words related to figures and way and time of their introductions should be emphasized. In primary schools mathematics curriculum, geometry has played a crucial role in increasing mathematical ways of thoughts. Hence, being introduced by parts from viewpoints of relational understanding should be emphasized more in textbooks and teachers should teach students after restructuring this. Mathematics teachers should help their students not only learn conceptual definitions of geometric figures in their courses well but also advance to rigid mathematical definitions. Therefore, that's why mathematics teachers should know meanings of concepts clearly and accurately.
In this study, the characteristics of herringbone grooved air thrust berings are studied. It is shown that a generalized coordinate transformation method which was developed for handling complex geometry such as herring bone groove journal bearings is well applied to herringbone grooved air thrust bearings. The load carrying capacity and stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated according to the design parameters like groove depth or the number of grooves and compared to that of plain air journal bearings.

An analytical method based on the upper bound approach for the cup-bar axisymmetric combined extrusion is presented to determine the deformation zones as well as extrusion load and deformed geometry in the early stage. A new kiematically admissible velocity field is derived by the appropriate transformation of the original velocity field and applying the flow function approach. The derived velocity field is directly related to the boundary function for the plastically deforming zones and the parameter controlling the flow direction to the forward part or backward part. Experiments are carred out with the annealed aluminum 2024 at room temperature for the various area reductions. The workhardening effect is considered in the formulation as a function of the height ratio between the deformed billet and the orighinal billet to calculate the extrusion pressures. The theoretical predictions for the extrusion loads and deformed configuration are in good agreement with the experimental results.

In this paper, image processing algorithm is studied to enhance the preciseness of the geometry while converting captured images to CAD data. A program is developed as a result. The code, in the image processing, utilizes outline trace, point data smoothing algorithm. It is capable of automatically generating design data by converting input image data to the CAD data. The output can be made in DXF, IGES formats. The current research can be utilized as a base data for the development of factory automation or flexible manufacturing system which adopt image processing based automatic inspection and measuring system.
In this study, the stiffness and damping coefficients of herringbone grooved air journal bearings are studied. A generalized coordinate transformation method to handle the complex geometry of incompressible fluid bearing is modified for compressible fluid. The modified equations are discretized by the base of finite difference method. A new computer program using Visual C++ language is developed. The load carrying capacity and stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated according to the design parameters like groove depth or the number of grooves and compared to that of plain air journal bearings.
