A comprehensive mechanistic model has been used to determine the flow pattern for gas-oil two-phase flow in pipes of petroleum production system. Depending on operational parameters, geometrical variables, and physical properties of the two phases, the two phases shows a specific flow patterns. For different parameters of the system, How pattern were compared for wide range of superficial velocities of oil and gas. In a variety of parameters, the inclinational angle and superficial velocities of oil and gas are the most dominant factors in determining the flow patterns for two-phase flow in pipelines. Other parameters such as pipe diameter and fluid properties have a limited effect on the change of flow patterns except for near transition. The mechanistic model is shown to be useful to determine the flow pattern in situations where either an experimental evaluation in a laboratory or reliable correlations are not available.
We need to flatten the brain cortex to smooth surface, sphere, or 2D plane in order to view the buried sulci. The rendered 3D surface of the segmented white matter and gray matter does not have the topology of a sphere due to the partial volume effect and segmentation error. A surface without correct topology may lead to incorrect interpretation of local structural relationships and prevent cortical unfolding. Although some algorithms try to correct topology, they require heavy computation and fail to follow the deep and narrow sulci. This paper proposes a method that corrects topology of the rendered surface fast, accurately, and automatically. The proposed method removes fractions beside the main surface, fills cavities in the inside of the main surface, and removes handles in the surface. The proposed method to remove handles has three-step approach. Step 1 performs smoothing operation on the rendered surface. In Step 2, vertices of sphere are gradually deformed to the smoothed surfaces and finally to the boundary of the segmented white matter and gray matter. The Step 2 uses multi-resolutional approach to prevent the deep sulci from geometrical intersection. In Step 3, 3D binary image is constructed from the deformed sphere of Step 2 and 3D surface is regenerated from the 3D binary image to remove intersection that may happen. The experimental results show that the topology is corrected while principle sulci and gyri are preserved and the computation amount is acceptable.

This study is reported the adhesion failure in adhesive bonded composite and specifically for the T-joint structure. Three-dimensional finite element analysis has been performed using a commercial tool and the necessary outcomes are obtained via an eight noded solid element (Solid 185-element) from the library of ANSYS. The structural analysis input has been incurred through ANSYS parametric design language (APDL) code. The normal and shear stress distributions along different layers of the joint structure have been evaluated as the final outcomes. Based on the stress distributions, failure location in the composite joint structure has been identified by using the Tsai-Wu stress failure criterion. It has been found that the failure index is maximum at the interface between flange and web part of the joint (top layer) which indicates the probable location of failure initiation. This kind of failures are considered as adhesion failure and the failure propagation is governed by strain energy release rate (SERR) of fracture mechanics. The different adhesion failure lengths are also considered at the failure location to calculate the SERR values i.e. mode I fracture (opening), mode II fracture (sliding) and mode III fracture (tearing) along the failure front. Also, virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) principle of fracture mechanics steps is used to calculate the above said SERRs. It is found that the mode I SERR is more dominating compared to other two modes of failure for the joint considered. Finally, the influences of various parametric (geometrical and material) effect on SERR of the joint structure are evaluated and discussed in details.
Selective laser melting (SLM) can produce a layer of a metal powder and then fabricate a three-dimensional structure by a layer-by-layer method. Each layer consists of several lines of molten metal. Laser parameters and thermal properties of the materials affect the geometric characteristics of the melt pool such as its height, depth, and width. The geometrical characteristics of the melt pool are determined herein by optical microscopy and three-dimensional bulk structures are fabricated to investigate the relationship between them. Powders of the commercially available Fe-based tool steel AISI H13 and Ni-based superalloy Inconel 738LC are used to investigate the effect of material properties. Only the scan speed is controlled to change the laser parameters. The laser power and hatch space are maintained throughout the study. Laser of a higher energy density is seen to melt a wider and deeper range of powder and substrate; however, it does not correspond with the most highly densified three-dimensional structure. H13 shows the highest density at a laser scan speed of 200 mm/s whereas Inconel 738LC shows the highest density at 600 mm/s.
This paper deals with an Umbrealla Arch Reinforcement Method (UARM) in tunnelling. It is known that the mechanism of the reinforcement system is too complex to be simulated in existent finite element (FE) frameworks when considering its complex geometry of pipe arrangements and contribution of each component of the reinforcement to reinforcing effect. In this study a 3-D elastoplastic FE procedure is, therefore, proposed by introducing homogenisation technique, which is used to define mathematically elastic as well as elastoplastic characteristics of a reinforced ground material as a composite. A number of practical suggestions are addressed considering staged constructions of tunnels. For illustrative purposes, a series of parametric studies are undertaken and anisotropic characteristics of the reinforced ground as well as effects of the reinforcement on tunnel convergences are investigated. It is found that the reinforced ground material defined in homogenisation framework has its mechanical characteristics reasonably representing inherent geometrical and quantitative characteristics of each of constituents.

As thermosonic ball bonding is developed for more and more advanced applications in the electronic packaging industry, the control of process stresses induced on the integrated circuits becomes more important. If Cu bonding wire is used instead of Au wire, larger ultrasonic levels are common during bonding. For advanced microchips the use of Cu based wire is risky because the ultrasonic stresses can cause chip damage. This risk needs to be managed by e.g. the use of ultrasound during the impact stage of the ball on the pad ("pre-bleed") as it can reduce the strain hardening effect, which leads to a softer deformed ball that can be bonded with less ultrasound. To find the best profiles of ultrasound during impact, a numerical model is reported for ultrasonic bonding with capillary dynamics combined with a geometrical model describing ball deformation based on volume conservation and stress balance. This leads to an efficient procedure of ball bond modelling bypassing plasticity and contact pairs. The ultrasonic force and average stress at the bond zone are extracted from the numerical experiments for a $50{\mu}m$ diameter free air ball deformed by a capillary with a hole diameter of $35{\mu}m$ at the tip, a chamfer diameter of $51{\mu}m$, a chamfer angle of $90^{\circ}$, and a face angle of $1^{\circ}$. An upper limit of the ultrasonic amplitude during impact is derived below which the ultrasonic shear stress at the interface is not higher than 120 MPa, which can be recommended for low stress bonding.

Cotton, wool, cotton/wool blended (80:20) and tencel fabrics were treated with low temperature oxygen plasma, enzymes (cellulase or protease), or oxygen plasma-enzyme and they were examined for dyeing and handling properties for environment friendly finishing. The appropriate conditions for cellulase treatment were enzyme concentration of 3g/l, pH of 5, and $60^{\circ}C$ for one hour, and for protease treatment were enzyme concentration of 4g/l, pH of 8, and $60^{\circ}C$ for one hour. The equilibrium uptake of a direct dye on cotton changed with plasma treatment and plasma-cellulase treatment, and the rate of dyeing slightly decreased. When wool was dyed with acid dye, the equilibrium dye uptake did not change with plasma, protease treatment nor plasma-protease treatment, however, the rate of dyeing had increased with plasma-protease treatment. From these results, it is assumed that plasma attacks the surface of the fiber, and enzyme mainly affects the inner part of the fiber. Plasma treatment did not affect mechanical properties related to the handling of fabrics. The handling test showed increased extension at maxmum load(EM), tensile energy(WT) with decreased tensile resilience (RT), and the fabrics became softer but resilience decreased slightly with enzyme treatment. The bending recidity(B), hysteresis of bending moment(2HB), and hysteresis of shear force at five degrees(2HG5) decreased, however, shear stiffness(G) increased. I knew the plasma pre-treatment made fabrics softer with lower koshi(stiffness). The handling of plasma pre-treated fabrics was better than that of enzyme-treated fabrics. When we pre-treated fabrics, the handling test showed decreased coefficient of friction(MIU), geometrical roughness(SMD), while the surface of fabrics became smoother and numeri increased. Even though compression resilience(RC) increased, fukurami(bulky property) and compressive elasticity, decreased due to the linearity of compression-thickness curve(LC) and compression energy(WC).

A thermocompressor is the equipment which compresses a vapor to a desired discharge pressure. Since it was first used as the evacuation pump for a surface condenser, it has been widely adopted for energy saving systems due to its high working confidence. In the present study, the geometrical analysis of the shape between the jet nozzle and the diffuser inlet, the drag force was calculated by means of the integrated equation of motion and the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) package called FLUENT. The computer simulations were performed to investigate the effects by the various suction flow rates, the distance from jet nozzle outlet to the diffuser inlet and the dimensions of the diffuser inlet section through the iterative calculation. In addition, the results from the CFD analysis on the thermocompressor and the experiments were compared for the verification of the CFD results. In the case of a jet nozzle, the results from the CFD analysis showed a good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, in this study, a special attention was paid on the performance of the thermocompressor by varying the diffuser convergence angle of $0.0^{\circ}$, $0.5^{\circ}$, $1.0^{\circ}$, $2.0^{\circ}$, $3.5^{\circ}$ and $4.5^{\circ}$. With the increase of the diffuser convergence angle. the suction capacity was improved up to the degree of $1.0^{\circ}$ while it was decreased over the degree of $1.0^{\circ}$.

In this paper, Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) is applied to the design of the Frequency Selective Surface(FSS) and residual stresses of hybrid radome is predicted. An equivalent circuit model with Square Loops arrays was derived and then PSO was applied for acquiring the optimized geometrical parameters with proper resonant frequency. Residual stresses occur in the FSS embedded composite structures after cocuring and have a great influence on the strength of the FSS embedded composite structures. They also effect transmission quality because of delamination. Therefore, the thermal residual stresses of FSS embedded composite structures were analyzed using finite element analysis with considering the effects of FSS pattern, and composite stacking sequence.

In this study, new design method of prosthetic foot was suggested which can evaluate the performance of prosthetic foot by implementing amputee's gait simulation using the finite element analysis. The basic shape of ESPF(Energy Storing Prosthetic Foot) was designed which is suitable for the below-knee amputee considering mechanical properties and kinematic properties. And, the performance evaluations were performed using the Taguchi method with orthogonal array L25. As a result, average main effect of factors for the ESPF's performance were calculated and then optimum condition of given shape was selected. Essential particulars for the performance evaluation from the simulation result were the quantity of external work needed in stance phase, the quantity of transferred energy from the ESPF through the knee, and the vertical displacement of knee at toe-off. Reasonable optimum condition was obtained from the using performance index. From this study, it was found that it is necessary for the design of ESPF to consider the geometrical data related to the magnitude of load on elastic material.
