  • The study is concerned with the investigation of curved line folding of developable surface from flat sheets of metal. General geometric relations among folding line, folded surface, folded angle are derived. From the derived geometric relations, the required plastic work and punch force are derived for the first approximation. Five methods of forming are suggested and the experiment is carried out using two chosen methods for the prismatic developable surfaces of which cross-sections have 103.deg.arc, 180.deg.arc, sinusoidal shape. In the die design for the tolding of prismatic developable surfaces, a stack of sheets were used to form shapes of the dies by which acceptable folded surfaces were obtained. The computed plastic work and punch force turned out to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental result.

  • This paper presents a reverse engineering method for compound surfaces using vision system. A CNC machining center is used as a measuring station, which is equipped with slit beam generator and vision probe. Since obtained data using slit beam or laser scanner may have much data loss along the edge of compound surfaces, an algorithm is presented in this study to recover missing geometric data at such region. First, b-spline interpolation is applied to extract edge information of the surface, and as a next step, b-spline approximation is applied to recover the missing geometric data. Finally, b-spline skinning method is applied to regenerate the surface information. Appropriate simulation and experimental works are preformed to very the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

  • In the present study, a shape design optimization scheme in shell structures is implemented based on the integrated framework of geometric modeling and analysis. The common representation of B-spline surface patch is used for geometric modeling. A geometrically-exact shell finite element is implemented. Control points or the surface are employed as design variables. In the computation of shape sensitivity, semi-analytical method is employed. Sequential linear programming is applied to the shape optimization of surfaces. The developed integrated framework should serve as a powerful tool to design and analysis of surfaces.

  • We develop an invariant local theory of Lorentz surfaces in pseudo-Euclidean 4-space by use of a linear map of Weingarten type. We find a geometrically determined moving frame field at each point of the surface and obtain a system of geometric functions. We prove a fundamental existence and uniqueness theorem in terms of these functions. On any Lorentz surface with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that any such surface is determined up to a rigid motion by three invariant functions satisfying three natural partial differential equations. In this way we minimize the number of functions and the number of partial differential equations determining the surface, which solves the Lund-Regge problem for this class of surfaces.

  • The NURBS surfaces are widely employed for exchanging geometric models between different CAD/CAE systems. However if the input NURBS surfaces are poorly parameterized, most surface meshing algorithms may fail or the constructed meshes can be ill-conditioned. In this paper presents a new method is presented that can generate well conditioned meshes even on poorly parameterized NURBS surfaces by regenerating NURBS surfaces. To begin with, adequate points are sampled on original poorly parameterized surfaces and new surfaces are created by interpolating these points. And then, mesh generation is performed on new surfaces. With this method, models with poorly parameterized NURBS surfaces can be meshed successfully.

  • Geometric modeling tool and analysis tool of shell surface have been developed in the different environments and purposes. Thus they cannot be naturally fitted to each other for the integrated design and analysis. In the present study, an integrated framework of geometric modeling, analysis, and design optimization is proposed. It is based on the common representation of B-spline surface patch. In the analysis module, a geometrically-exact shell finite element is implemented. In shape optimization module, control points of the surface are selected as design variables. For the computation of shape sensitivities, semi-analytical method is used. Sequential linear programming(SLP) is adopted for the shape optimization of surfaces. The developed integrated framework should serve as a powerful tool for the geometric modeling, analysis, and shape design of surfaces.

  • An automatic mesh generation scheme with unstructured quadrilateral elements on trimmed NURBS surfaces has been developed. In this paper NURBS surface geometries in the IGES format have been employed to represent geometric models. For unstructured mesh generation with quadrilateral elements, a domain decomposition algorithm employing loop operators has been modified. As for the surface meshing, an indirect 2D approach is proposed in which both quasi-expanded planes and projection planes are employed. Sampled meshes for complex models are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm.

  • As a continuation to the study in [8, 12, 15, 17], we construct bi-conservative central normal (BCN) and bi-conservative asymptomatic normal (BAN) ruled surfaces in Euclidean 3-space ${\mathbb{E}}^3$. For such surfaces, local study is given and some examples are constructed using computer aided geometric design (CAGD).

  • In this paper, we linked the motion of spherical images with the motion of their curves. Surfaces generated by the evolution of spherical image of a space curve are constructed. Also geometric proprieties of these surfaces are obtained.
