The aim of this study was to detect landslide using satellite image and apply the landslide to probabilistic landslide-susceptibility mapping at Gangneung area, Korea using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations were identified by change detection technique of KOMSAT-1 (Korea Multipurpose Satellite) EOC (Electro Optical Camera) images and checked in field. For landslide-susceptibility mapping, maps of the topography, geology, soil, forest, lineaments, and land cover were constructed from the spatial data sets. Then, the sixteen factors that influence landslide occurrence were extracted from the database. Using the factors and detected landslide, the relationships were calculated using frequency ratio, one of the probabilistic model. Then, landslide-susceptibility map was drawn using the frequency ration and finally, the map was verified by comparing with existing landslide locations. As the verification result, the prediction accuracy showed 86.76%. The landslide-susceptibility map can be used to reduce hazards associated with landslides and to land cover planning.
The purpose of this study is to analyze landslide that occurred in Yongin area in 1991 using spatial database. For this, landslide locations are detected from aerial photographs interpretation and field survey. The locations of landslide, topography, soil, forest and geology were constructed to spatial database using Geographic Information System (GIS). To establish occurrence factors of landslide, slope, aspect and curvature of topography were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of wood were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the TM satellite image. Landslide was analyzed using spatial correlation between the landslide and the landslide occurrence factors by bivariate probability methods. GIS was used to analyze vast data efficiently and statistical programs were used to maintain specialty and accuracy. The result can be used to prevention of hazard, land use planning and construction planning as basic data.
Quarrying of rock for construction purposes is a significant industry in any economy but has its negative impact. This study examined the impact of quarry activities on surrounding vegetation in Ogun State. Geographic Information System approach was used to map the various quarry locations present in different Local Government Areas in Ogun State; of which eight sites were selected namely Isara, Idode, Iwaye, Ogbere, Ilagbe, Adelokun Baaki Ake and Igodo. Vegetation composition analyses were carried out on the eight sites using Haga Ultimeter and chlorophyll content analysis. Data were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics using SAS package (9.4 version). Sixty quarries were identified with Odeda Local Government Area (38.3%) having the highest percentage of quarry. The vegetative compositions analyses showed that Albizia zygia had the highest frequency (7) among identified plants in the quarries. The chlorophyll content of Albizia zygia in the wet season (492.2 mg Chl/m2) was significantly higher than dry season (464.4 mg Chl/m2) in all locations. However, Baaki Ake (Albizia zygia) chlorophyll content was highest among other locations in both seasons. In conclusion Albizia zygia showed highest resistance to quarry activities, hence common among other plants identified around the quarries.
Variation in diet and the rates of colorectal cancers have confounded researchers in recent years. Comparisons of populations in different geographic locations and of different ethnic origins have shown considerable differences in disease frequency, location and relation to diet. This paper revisits an earlier comparison of Maori rates of disease and diet based on data from 20 years ago with surprising changes in disease rates today.
Thompson's (1990) adaptive cluster sampling is a promising sampling technique to ensure effective representation of rare or localized population units in the sample. We consider the problem of simultaneous estimation of the numbers of earners through a number of rural unorganized industries of which some are concentrated in specific geographic locations and demonstrate how the performance of a conventional Rao-Hartley-Cochran (RHC, 1962) estimator can be improved upon by using auxiliary information in the form of generalized regression (greg) estimators and then how further improvements are also possible to achieve by adopting adaptive cluster sampling.
This paper is to present an iterative method for determining an optimum geographic location pattern for the warehouses (sources) that are employed to serve or supply, known quantities of its finished product to a set of custormer areas (destinations) that have fixed and known locations, where the number of sources is permitted to vary. What must be determined, in this paper, is the number and location of the sources or warehouses that will minimize the combined costs of transferring and storing the total quantity of products demanded in the destinations or customer areas.

In this study, soil contamination maps related to Cu and Pb were created at the Busan abandoned mine in Korea using a handheld X-Ray Fluorescence(XRF) and Geographic Information Systems(GIS). Hydrological analysis was performed using the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) of the study area to identify the flow directions of surface runoff where pollutants can be dispersed from the soil contamination sources. 24 locations for measuring the soil contamination related to Cu and Pb were selected by considering the result of hydrological analysis. The results measured at the 24 locations using the handheld XRF showed that the highest value of Cu contamination is 8,255ppm and that of Pb is 2,146ppm. The field investigation data were entered into ArcGIS software, and then soil contamination maps regarding Cu and Pb with a 5m grid-spacing were created after performing spatial interpolations using the ordinary kriging method. As a result, we could know that high concentrations of Cu and Pb are presented at the waste and tailings dumps around the abandoned mine openings. This study also showed that the handheld XRF and GIS can be utilized to create soil contamination maps related to Cu and Pb in the field.
Geographic information system (GIS) technology has useful applications for epidemiology, enabling the detection of spatial patterns of disease dispersion and locating geographic areas at increased risk. In this study, we applied GIS technology to characterize the spatial pattern of mortality due to liver cancer in the autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang in southwest China. A database with liver cancer mortality data for 1971-1973, 1990-1992, and 2004-2005, including geographic locations and climate conditions, was constructed, and the appropriate associations were investigated. It was found that the regions with the highest mortality rates were central Guangxi with Guigang City at the center, and southwest Guangxi centered in Fusui County. Regions with the lowest mortality rates were eastern Guangxi with Pingnan County at the center, and northern Guangxi centered in Sanjiang and Rongshui counties. Regarding climate conditions, in the 1990s the mortality rate of liver cancer positively correlated with average temperature and average minimum temperature, and negatively correlated with average precipitation. In 2004 through 2005, mortality due to liver cancer positively correlated with the average minimum temperature. Regions of high mortality had lower average humidity and higher average barometric pressure than did regions of low mortality. Our results provide information to benefit development of a regional liver cancer prevention program in Guangxi, and provide important information and a reference for exploring causes of liver cancer.

In mid-90's, the Korean government introduced the GIS(Geographic Information System) to digitalize every topography of national land and thereby, index locations and attributes of various urban facilities to construct a system whereby every information could be managed and operated in an integrated way, but the reliability of such geographic information has yet to be tested, much less its modification, complementation and maintenance. Under such circumstances, this study was aimed at constructing a reference point infrastructure for Seoul and Kyonggi area and comparing the data obtained from the GPS operation and various facility location data with the existing GIS data to address the problems of GIS operation and suggest their solutions. As a result of calculating the GPS reference point data and analyzing the deviations of the unknown point data in comparison with the fixed point ones, it was found that the horizontal location values were reliable within +/- 5cm, but that the above-sea level values varied as much as 1.4m depending on the deployment of pre-set fixed points determined by the direct level gauging. In addition, as a result of directly surveying major facilities around the roads based on the coordinates of the urban reference points networked with such a reference point system to check their conformity to existing data, it was confirmed that the difference was as wide as 2m. Such differences may be attributable to the fact that the data with their geographic information not confirmed are used as basic data for GIS. Hence, this study suggests the ways to set the absolute geographic data based on reference points and test the reliability of existing data and thereby, suggests a methods to solve the problems.

We design and implement an ORDBMS-based geographic information system for sightseeing information of Chungbuk to verify the performance and applicability of GEUS/XTM ORDBMS. We Acquire the positional coordinates of the boundaries of administrative districts , roads, and railroads, determine the various kinds of information such as the locations of sightseeing sites, lodgings, and so on, design an object-relational schema using OMT, and implement the geographic information system including a database system. Through the examination of selective accessibility on the sightseeing inform ation database by the various queries, we conclude that the ORDBMS is more applicable than other DBMSs in modeling, storing, referring, and managing of non-fixed complex data such as sightseeing information. Therefore, ORDBMSs provide efficient and extensible implementations of databases and information services from various sources for the increasing demand on geographic information service on internet.
