Here we discuss a geochemical characterisitc of rare earth element (REE) pattern of a Precambrain leucogranitic gneiss at Imweon, Gangwon Province, Korea. The outcrop includes biotite gneiss xenolith. The leucocratic granite gneiss contacting with biotite gneiss is pegmatitic. However, there is no evidence of contact metamorphism between biotite gneiss and leucocratic-pegmatitic granite gneiss. The leucocratic granite gneiss shows a specific phenomenon of M-type (convex curved) tetrad effect in chondrite-normalized REE patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The degree of REE tetrad effect in the leucocratic-pegmatitic granitec gneiss is weak and shows partly W-type (concave curved) tetrad effect. The Eu anomaly of leucocratic granite gneiss has close relationship with the degree of tetrad effect as well as Ca/Sr ratio. Our results suggest that the REE tetrad effect from the leucocratic granite gneiss should be formed during differentiation process of granitic magma. We also confirmed that the weathering might affect Eu or Ce anomaly rather than the formation of REE tetrad effect in granitic rock.
The transformation of rocks into unconsoli-dated debris is the prime geomorphic processes including weathering and soil forming process. In these processes, rocks tend to be unconsol-idated debris with small particles. Particularly, typical granite is more likely affected by weathering, since the rock consists of quartz, feldspar and mica that can be easily coarse-grained and well jointed without bedding. The purposes of this study are to clarify the index and properties of mechanical weathering that contributed to transformation of granite distributed in Korea. A total of seventy-three samples of weathering products of granite in Korea were collected during the three-year period, March 30, 1989 to February 21, 1992. The prticle analysis was performed for clay, silt and sand using Sieve and Hydrometer. The results of the analysis are as the followings: First, soil textures in the study area are included seven categories of textures as C, CL, SCL, Sil, SL, LS, and S. Among these textures, the most frequent soil texture were SL, S and SCL in order. Second, the weathering products of granite are crumbled by weathering and hydrothermal. Clay texture consisted of fine materials seems to be influenced by hydrothermal, while Sand texture composed of coarse materials, seems to be significantly influenced by weathering. Third, the index of mechanical weathering by region indicates that Hawngdeung(1) is the lowest as 2.37 and the index by soil texture shows that Clay texture is the lowest as 2.46. Forth, the regression analysis of MW showes that sand/clay variable is the most significant variable. Finally, pedochemical weathering is prevailed on the clayey gruss and geochemical weathering is on the gruss and shattering is on the weathered rock, strongly, but the fine materials in some sites were formed by argillation of hydrothermal.

Mn-Fe phosphate mineral complexes included within the pegmatite are observed at Jurassic Cheolwon two-mica granite in Gyeonggi Massif, South Korea. The genetic evolution between the Cheolwon two-mica granite and pegmatite, and various trend of Mn-Fe phosphate minerals is made by later magmatic, hydrothermal, and weathering process based on mineralogical, geochemical analysis. The Cheolwon two-mica granite is identified as S-type granite, considering its chemical composition (metaluminous ~ peraluminous), post-collisional environment, low magnetic susceptibility, and existence of biotite and muscovite. The K-Ar age (ca. 153 Ma) of pegmatite is well coincident with age of the Cheolwon two-mica granite ($151{\pm}4Ma$). It indicates that these two rocks are originated from the same magma. Pegmatite indicates the LCT geochemical signature, and was classified as muscovite-rare element class / Li subclass / beryl type / beryl-columbite-phosphate subtype pegmatite. The triplite $\{(Fe^{2+}{_{0.4}},Mn_{1.6})(PO_4)(F_{0.9})\}$ is dominant phosphates in later magmatic stage which partly altered to leucophosphite $\{KFe^{3+}{_2}(PO_4)_2OH{\cdot}2H_2O\}$ and jahnsite $\{(Fe^{3+}{_{0.7}},Mn_{2.3})(PO_4)_2OH{\cdot}4H_2O\}$ by hydrothermal alteration. In particular, near fractures, the triplite has been separatelty replaced by the phosphosiderite ($Fe^{3+}PO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) and Mn-oxide minerals during weathering stage.
Geochemical study was conducted to elucidate the origin of fluorine (F) distributed in the rocks within the four areas of Yongyudo and Sammokdo, Incheon, which have been used as the source area of land reclamation for the $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ stage construction sites of the Incheon International Airport. The main geology of the study area is Triassic biotite granite. Fluorine is contained at high levels in biotite granite, mylonite, and dykes (andesite and, basaltic-andesite). Furthermore, the higher concentrations of fluorine in the biotite granite can be contributed to fluorite. The results of microscopic analyses reveal that the fluorite was mostly observed as small vienlets together with quartz. This features support that fluorite was naturally formed due to the secondary process of hydrothermal fluids. In addition, fluorine was investigated to be highly enriched in a large amount of mica within the veins. In the case of mylonite, a high levels of fluorine was contributed to a large amount of sericite. The sericites contained in the mylointe, differently to those of the biotite granite, filled the micro-fractures of quartz formed as a result of mylonitization and included small cataclastic quartz grains. This indicates that fluorine was naturally enriched due to the alteration of hydrothermal fluids filling fractured zones formed by mylonitization. Consequently, the results of petrological and mineralogical study confirm that the fluorine distributed in the rocks within the Yongyudo and Sammokdo originated naturally.
The seafloor massive sulfide deposits are important mineral resources for base and precious metals, and their ore genesis and metal contents are mainly controlled by wall-rock leaching process and/or magmatic volatile input from the underlying magma chamber. However, the contribution of two different metal sources to the seafloor hydrothermal mineralization significantly varies in diverse geological settings and thus still remains controversial. In this review, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of SMS deposits from mid-ocean ridges (MORs) and volcanic arcs were investigated to understand the contribution from different metal sources and to suggest future challenges that need to be addressed. As a result, the genetic occurrences of enargite and cubanite, galena and barite indicate the effects of magmatic input and water-rock interaction, respectively. Also, the distributional behaviors of Co, As, and Hg in pyrite and FeS content of sphalerite could be useful empirical indicators to discriminate the significant roles of different metal sources between MOR and Arc settings. To date, as most studies have focused on sulfide samples recovered from the seabed, further studies on magmatic sulfides and sulfate minerals are required to fully understand the genetic history of SMS deposits.

The buffer materials in disposal hole are exposed to the decay heat from spent nuclear fuels and groundwater inflow through adjacent rockmass. Since understanding of thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (T-H-M-C) interaction in buffer material is crucial for predicting their long-term performance and safety of disposal repository, it is necessary to investigate the heating-hydration characteristics and consequent T-H-M-C behavior of the buffer materials under disposal conditions considering geochemical factors. In response, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute developed a laboratory-scale 'Lab.THMC' experiment system, which characterizes the T-H-M behavior of buffer materials under different geochemical conditions by analyzing heating-hydration process and stress changes. This technical report introduces the detail design of the Lab.THMC system, summarizes preliminary experimental results, and outlines future research plans.

Geological and related thematic maps make various economical and social benefits at many sectors. Recently, development of information managing technology such as GIS, Geographic Information System, enlarges the usage of geological map and information. In this research, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, we analyzed the weight of attributes which compose value of geological map and information. Results of research are as follows. By the analysis of the weight of attributes, we found that the weight of confidence, upper hierarchy attribute, was above 50%. The weight of convenience and additional effect was about $16%{\sim}30%$ in the geological map, geophysical map, geochemical map and hydrogeologic map. And the consumption of each maps will increase, especially in large scale map.
Samples of Badwater greenstones from the Crystal Falls terrane in northeastern Wisconsin have been analyzed for major, trace and rare earth elements. Geochemical characteristics of the rocks provide clues to the petrologic character and paleotectonic environment of basaltic magma generation. They have chemical composition typical of continental tholeiites. The low Mg values and abundances of Ni and Cr indicate that the lavas were extensively fractionated prior to extrusion. The variations of incompatible elements suggest that the rocks were affected by interaction with crustal rocks. The samples least affected by contamination have trace element compositions similar to those of T-type mid-ocean ridge basalts. The parent was modified by crustal contamination process and this process shifted the rock compositions to that of continental tholeiites as the rock evolved. Interpretations of the chemical characteristics of the rocks, based on modem analogs, favor their emplacement in an extensional tectonic regime.
The anorthositic rocks and the many other plutons which are of different varieties and age were distributed in the northern extremity of the distributed areas of H-S anorthositic rocks. The purpose of this study was to find plutons which had comagmatic relationships, and to make clear the magmatic process of anorthositic magma. The plutons were classified, and the petrological and the geochemical characteristics of the plutons were compared and researched in this study. And, because, like anorthosite, the rocks which intrude in the deep crust accompany assimilation, an AFC model calculation was performed to make the differentiation process of the anorthositic rocks clear. The plutons in this area were classified into three groups, and the three groups were composed of the Precambrian anorthositic rocks and related rocks, the Jurassic gabbro, and the plutons of undnown age. The anorthositic magma was differentiated from the anorthositic rocks through the tonalite to the alkali-feldspar granite, and it was differentiated under K, Mg, Fe free/lack condition. It was found from the result of AFC model that the anorthositic rocks were differentiated by fractional crystallization, but they were assimilated with wall-rocks, and the assimilation was performed at the rate of r$\leq$0.1. The plutons which intruded the anorthositic rocks subsequently consisted of the gabbro, the megacrystic granite, the fine-grained granite, and the gneissose granite. But they were formed by the repeated intrusion of magma, which may, or may not, be of the same origin. According to the result of the RCF model, these plutons were differentiated by simple fractional crystallization, and they were assimilated relatively less than the anorthositic rocks.
The geochemical characteristics including minerals, major and trace elements chemistries of the Proterozoic, Jurassic and Cretaceous granites in Korea are systematically summarized and intended to decipher the origin and crystallization process in connection with the tectonic evolution. The granites in Korea are classified into three different ages of the granites with their own distinctive geochemical patterns: 1) Proterozoic granitoids; 2) Jurassic granites(cratonic and mobile belt); 3) Cretaceous-Tertiary granites. The Proterozoic granite gneisses (I-type and ilmenite-series) formed by metamorphism of the geochemically evolved granite protolith. The Proterozoic granites (S-type and ilmenite-series) produced by remobilization of sialic crust. The Jurassic granites (S-type and ilmenite-series) were mainly formed by partial melting of crustal materials, possibly metasedimentary rocks. The Cretaceous granites (I-type and magnetite-series) formed by fractional crystallization of parental magmas from the igneous protolith in the lower crust or upper mantle. The low temperature ($315{\sim}430^{\circ}C$) and small temperature variations (${\pm}20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$) in the cessation of exsolution of perthites for the Proterozoic and Jurassic granites might have been caused by slow cooling of the granites under regional metamorphic regime. The high ($520^{\circ}C$) and large temperature variations (${\pm}110^{\circ}C$) of perthites for the Cretaceous granites postulate that the rapid cooling of the granitic magma. In terms of the oxygen fugacity during the feldspar crystallization in the granite magmas, the Jurassic mobile belt granites were crystallized in the lowest oxygen fugacity condition among the Korean granites, whereas the Cretaceous granites in the Gyeongsang basin at the high oxygen fugacity condition. The Jurassic mobile belt granites are located at the Ogcheon Fold Belt, resulting by closing-collision situation such as compressional tectonic setting, and emplaced into a Kata-Mesozonal ductile crust. The Jurassic cratonic granites might be more evolved either during intrusion through thick crust or owing to lower degree of partial melting in comparison with the mobile belt granites. The Cretaceous granites are possibly comparable with a continental margin of Andinotype. Subduction of the Kula-Pacific ridge provided sufficient heat and water to trigger remelting at various subcrustal and lower crustal igneous protoliths.
