  • The taxonomy of gudgeons of the subfamily Gobioninae in Korea is reviewed and keys to supraspecific taxa (subfamilies and genera) of the subfamily Gobioninae are provided, as well as the synonyms and distribution of the species or subspecies. Abbottina springeri, poorly known in Korea is redescribed with the extention of its known morphological characters and geographical distribution. Squalidus sp. occurring rivers of the Yongdokoship, the Hyongsan, and the Hoeya in the Gyongsangbugdo and in the Gyongsangnamdo differs from three previously described species from Korea in the numbers and structure of lateral line scales, color patterns on the body sides, and eye diameter etc. The genus name of Gonoprcktopterus mylodon should be transferred from Gonoproktopterus to Hemibarbus, because the species is more similar to Hemibarbus longirostris or Belligobio eristrigma than to Gonoproktopterus, an Indian genus of Barbinae. The korean gudgeons of the subfamily Gobioninae are grouped five possible phyletic series, as follow ; Hemibarbus, Pseudorasbora, Sarcocheilichthys, Gnathopogon, and Pseudogobio group. The genus Gobiobotia is not placed in the subfamily Gobioninae but in the subfamily Gobiobotinae in relation to 3 pairs of mental barbels and some osteological characters.

  • Barbel steed (Hemibarbus labeo) is a small freshwater fish species as semi-bottom dwellers distributed in eastern Asia. We carried out characterization of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from the mitochondrial DNA of H. labeo in the Sumjin River to identify the phylogenetic location of H. labeo in the genus Hemibarbus and Cyprinidae. Multiple alignment of the 577 bp COI sequence revealed high sequence homology (99~100%) between Seomjin River H. labeo. The nucleotide sequence similarity between H. labeo (HD1) and H. mylodon was 88.91% and that of H. longirostis was 88.81% among the three species found in Korea. In addition, the nucleotide sequence similarities of H. maculatus, H. meditus, H. umbrifer and H. barbus showed 98.97%, 97.20%, 96.87% and 98.85%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis on seven species of the genus Hemibarbus showed that the H. labeo collected in this study formed two clades. One of which consisted of Hadong, Imsil, Kangjin. The other one formed a step with HD2, HD8 and HD9 of Hadong and the H. labeo reported in Busan, Asan and Seoul, Korea. Phylogenetic position of the H. labeo among Cyprinidae showed 0.143 for the evolutionary distance from Zacco platypus and 0.006 for the H. maculatus. In addition, the genetic position of the H. labeo among 28 species of Cyprinidae was found to be located in Group I, including Gobioninae fishes. The results of this study will provide key genetic information for the taxonomic comparison in Cyprinidae and study of model fish for pollution monitoring in freshwater environments.

  • Cytogenetic characteristics of three Hemibarbus species (H. labeo, H. longirostris and H. mylodon) were analyzed based on erythrocyte measurement, flow cytometric estimation of cellular DNA content, and karyological analysis. Average nuclear volumes for H. labeo, H. longirostris and H. mylodon were 22.5, 21.7 and $26.0\;{\mu}m^3$, respectively. The estimated genome sizes of those three species were not significantly different from one another, being recorded as 2.51, 2.33 and 2.35 pg/cell for H. labeo, H. longirostris and H. mylodon, respectively. Modal chromosome numbers of the three species were the same as 2n = 50. However, their karyotypes and fundamental numbers (FN) were different among species; 16M+16SM+18T/A (FN = 82) for H. labeo, 18M+16SM+16T/A (FN = 84) for H. longirostris and 18M+24SM+8T/A (FN = 92) for H. mylodon.

  • The characteristics of the pharyngeal bones and their teeth in Korean Cyprinids fishes, as a rule, are summarized as follow : 1. The materials 13 genera and 17 species from Nak Dong River. 2. Breadth of bone about 2.8(Cyprinus carpio) to 4.9(Culter brevicauda) in bone length. Length of bone about 8.5(Carassius carassius ) to 20.2 (Pseudogobio esocinus ) in body length. Breadth of pitted surface about 66%(Carassius carassius) to 85%(Acanthorhodeus asmussi ) of breadth of bone. 3. The position and distinct ratio of anterior angle correlated. 4. Posterior limb always longer than anteriro, but posterior edentulous process not shorter than anterior's or equal. 5. Zacco platypus with pitted surface on anterior limb , but Z.temmincki without it. 6. Teeth one to three rowed in accordance with the differences of each genus : a. one rowed genera ..... Carassius , Pseudorasbora, Sarcocheilichthys (Sakiyae), Pungtungia, Acheilognathus, Acanthorhodeus. b. two rowed genera ........ Pseudogobio, Gnathopogon, Tribolodon. c. Three rowed genera .... Cyprinus, Hemibarbus, Zacco , Culter 7. Teeth of main (primary ) row with four or five teeth is symmetrized exceptive three genera (Tribolodon, Zacco, Culter). 8. Grinding surface and bill type correlated. 9. In Acheilognathus, A.Yamatsutae have one or two indistinct serration but each individual is unlike.

  • Karyological characteristics and relative DNA values were investigated in four species of the family Cyprinidae of Korean fresh-water. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The two Hemibarus species, H. longirostris and H. labeo, had the aiploid chromosome number of 50. The compliment of former consisted of 7 metacentric, 14 submets- and subtelocentric and 4 telo- or acrocentric pairs, whereas latter had 9, 11 and 5 pairs respectively, Total arm numbers (AN) were 92 and 90. 2) In the case of two species of genus Moroce, M. oxycephalus and M. lagowskii, their diploid number and karyotype showed in identical pattern for each other (2n=50); 6 pairs of metacentrics, 14 pairs of submeta- and subtelocentrics and 5 pairs of telo- or acrocentrics. The AN of both species were 90. 3) Relative DNA values of all species were measured as about 60% that of gold fish. From the above observation, the cytogenetical character was discussed with special concern to the phylogenetic significance.
