  • Most if not all research articles published in journals require the author to write an abstract regardless of academic field. However, abstract writing in English is a highly specialized genre on its own. In this light, the purpose of this study is to investigate differences in journal article abstracts written in English by Korean and native English scholars. 90 research paper abstracts written in English by Korean national scholars, US-educated Korean scholars and native English scholars were compared according to rhetorical organization. A generalized rhetorical scheme was used in analysis which was based on Graetz (1985) and Swales (1990): Background-Purpose-Method-Result-Conclusion. In addition, the use of conjunctions as a cohesive device was analyzed based on the categories proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Analyses of the research paper abstracts showed that the majority of the abstracts included the purpose, method and result components. However, while approximately 70 percent of native English writers used research background in the abstract, only 26 percent of Korean national scholars did so. Regarding the use of conjunctions, Korean-national scholars overused and inappropriately used additive and temporal conjunctions. The US-educated Korean scholars showed similar patterns to the native English speakers. The findings obtained here imply that there is a need to provide academic writing instruction of abstracts to non-native scholars.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to identify the factors which affect the performance of Chinese web drama. Design/methodology/approach - For empirical investigation, 163 web dramas which were listed in AiQiyi platform were used as the sample. It was hypothesized that number of explanatory variables drawn from previous research, including the power of producing company, and star power of actors and actresses, average length of an episode, genre of the drama, viewer ratings, existence of exclusive SNS account and the use of existing IP, would influence the performance of the drama measured by cumulative hit number. A hierarchical regression analysis is conducted to test hypotheses. Findings - Results show that star power of actors and actresses, average length of an episode, viewer ratings and the use of IP indeed affect the performance of Chinese web drama. Research implications or Originality - As the first empirical study of this kind, this study may help not only domestic but also global participants of fast growing Chinese web drama industry.

  • The purpose of this corpus-based study was to find 4-word lexical bundles in computer science research articles. As the demand for research articles (RAs) for international publication increases, the need for acquiring field-specific writing conventions for this academic genre has become a burning issue. Particularly, one area of burgeoning interest in the examination of rhetorical structures and linguistic features of RAs is the use of lexical bundles, the indispensable building blocks that make up an academic discourse. To illustrate, different academic discourses rely on distinctive repertoires of lexical bundles. Because lexical bundles are often acquired as a whole, the recurring multi-word sequences can be retrieved automatically to make written discourse more fluent and natural. Therefore, the proper use of rhetorical devices specific to a particular discipline can be a vital indicator of success within the discourse communities. Hence, to identify linguistic features that make up specific registers, this corpus-based study examines the types and usage frequency of lexical bundles in the discipline of CS, one of the most in-demand fields world over. Given that lexical bundles are empirically-derived formulaic multi-word units, identifying core lexical bundles used in RAs, they may provide insights into the specificity of particular CS text types. This will in turn provide empirical evidence of register specificity and technicality within the academic discourse of computer science. As in the results, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

  • In this study, in order to understand the characteristics of the users' information needs for each public library unit, the user needs were analyzed based on the various attribute information of the books loaned to 11 public libraries in 8 districts in Seoul. As a result, the prominent book use patterns of the libraries were revealed, specifically related to the target user groups, purpose/motivation, interests/preferences, book genre, and subject. In addition, there was a preference for authors, and a difference in the role of the preferred authors in each library was also revealed. The results of this study will help to provide guidelines for the development of differentiated collections and service programs based on user needs.

  • The modes of narratives and communication have expanded due to social and cultural changes and technological development. Thus texts have become multimodal and media hybridities and media crossover have been increasing as well. Multimodality requires new literacy to understand and interpret those multimodal texts other than existing traditional literacy approaches. The New London Group (2000) argues that multiliteracies are needed to serve today's changing multimodal texts. Kress (2003) also argues, visual texts have been prevailing, being mingled with other modes of texts such as linguistic, audio, gestural, and spatial modes. Literary texts are not exception in this trend of multimodality. The recent renaissance of comics, in particular, the new light on graphic novels can be interpreted in this historical vein. In comparison to comics, no consensus has been made in defining graphic novels, however, many studies have been recently conducted in order to look into the potential of graphic novels in building multiliteracies. In this paper, the graphic novel as a literary genre are explored from a histocial perspective and the definition of graphic novels was attempted to be made. In the light of multiliteracies, this paper presented cases that show how graphic novels can be utilized to build multiliteracies. Lastly, the use of graphic novels for English as a foreign language was introduced as well. The author hopes that at the age of multimodality, the potential graphic novels have in language and literacy education can be taken into account by language teachers and students in expanding their territory of literacy.

  • To understand the use of the ebooks among undergraduate students, a questionnaire was devised and collected data from 466 respondents. The level of ebook and its service awareness appears to be low, and only about 30% of the students have used ebooks in the past. Students access ebooks primarily through the library homepage. 73% of the users read 3 ebooks and below. The subject and area of reading is fairly spread, however literary works and genre fiction were most popular And the purpose is split into academic and private reading. Most of the users lack of knowledge about additional functions. Overall satisfaction level is low. Discomfort and ebooks illiteracy constitute the major reasons of nonuse, however about 88% of the nonusers show willingness to use in the future. According to the interview, active users are familiar with the screen reading as well as perceived advantages of ebooks. Nontheless, their satisfaction level is still low. Based on the results, recommendations for creating awareness, education, production development and service evaluation are suggested to promote the ebooks use.

  • The present study argues that documentary-animation films, which are based on actual human voices, on the level of representation, constitute a new expansion for the medium of animation films, which serve as testimonies to the real world. Animation films are produced using very diverse techniques so that they are complex to the degree of being indefinable, and documentary films, though based on objective representation, increase in complexity in that there exist various types of artificial interventions such as direction and digital image processing. Having emerged as a hybrid genre of the two media, documentary-animation films draw into themselves actual events and elements so that they conceptually share reality-based narratives and are visually characterized by the trappings of animation films. Generally classified as 'animated documentaries', this genre triggered discussions following the release of , a work that is mistaken as having used rotoscoping transforming live action in terms of the technique. When analyzed in detail, however, this work is presented as an ambiguous medium where the characteristics of animation films, which are virtual simulacra without reality, and of documentaries, which are based on the objective indexicality of the referents, coexist because of its mixed use of typical animation techniques, 3D programs, and live-action images. Discussed in the present study, , , and share the characteristics of the medium of documentaries in that the narratives develop as testimonies of historical figures but, at the same time, are connected to animation films because of their production techniques and direction characteristics. Consequently, this medium must be discussed as a new expansion rather than being included in the existing classification system, and such a presupposition is an indispensable process for directly facing the reality of the works and for developing discussions. Through works that directly use the interviewees' voices yet do not transcend the characteristics of animation films, the present study seeks to define documentary-animation films and to discuss the possibility of the medium, which has expanded as a testimony to the real world.
