Control of plant diseases is largely dependent on use of agrochemicals. However, there are widening gaps between our knowledge on plant diseases gained from genetic/mechanistic studies and rapid translation of the knowledge into target-oriented development of effective agrochemicals. Here we propose that the time is ripe for computer-aided drug discovery/design (CADD) in molecular plant pathology. CADD has played a pivotal role in development of medically important molecules over the last three decades. Now, explosive increase in information on genome sequences and three dimensional structures of biological molecules, in combination with advances in computational and informational technologies, opens up exciting possibilities for application of CADD in discovery and development of agrochemicals. In this review, we outline two categories of the drug discovery strategies: structure- and ligand-based CADD, and relevant computational approaches that are being employed in modern drug discovery. In order to help readers to dive into CADD, we explain concepts of homology modelling, molecular docking, virtual screening, and de novo ligand design in structure-based CADD, and pharmacophore modelling, ligand-based virtual screening, quantitative structure activity relationship modelling and de novo ligand design for ligand-based CADD. We also provide the important resources available to carry out CADD. Finally, we present a case study showing how CADD approach can be implemented in reality for identification of potent chemical compounds against the important plant pathogens, Pseudomonas syringae and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.
Although numerous studies demonstrate that one technique outperforms the others for a given data set, there is often no way to tell a priori which of these techniques will be most effective to solve a specific problem. Alternatively, it has been suggested that a better approach to classification problem might be to integrate several different forecasting techniques by combining their results. The issues of interest are how to integrate different modeling techniques to increase the prediction performance. This paper proposes the post-model integration method, which means integration is performed after individual techniques produce their own outputs, by finding the best combination of the results of each method. To get the optimal or near optimal combination of different prediction techniques. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are applied, which are particularly suitable for multi-parameter optimization problems with an objective function subject to numerous hard and soft constraints. This study applied three individual classification techniques (Discriminant analysis, Logit and Neural Networks) as base models to the corporate failure prediction context. Results of composite prediction were compared to the individual models. Preliminary results suggests that the use of integrated methods will offer improved performance in business classification problems.
This paper describes the secant method for solving the economic dispatch (ED) problem with generator constraints and transmission losses. The ED problem is an important optimization problem in the economic operation of a power system. The proposed algorithm involves selection of minimum and maximum incremental costs (lambda values) and then the evaluation of optimal lambda at required power demand is done by secant method. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a power system having 6, 15, and 40 generating units. Studies have been made on the proposed method to solve the ED problem by taking 120 and 200 units with generator constraints. Simulation results of the proposed approach were compared in terms of solution quality, convergence characteristics, and computation efficiency with conventional methods such as lambda iterative method, heuristic methods such as genetic algorithm, and meta-heuristic methods like particle swarm optimization. It is observed from different case studies that the proposed method provides qualitative solutions with less computational time compared to various methods available in the literature.
The optimal power flow(OPF) problem was introduced by Carpentier in 1962 as a network constrained economic dispatch problem. Since then, the OPF problem has been intensively studied and widely used in power system operation and planning. In these days, OPF is becoming more and more important in the deregulation environment of power pool and there is an urgent need of faster solution technique for on-line application. To solve OPF problem, many heuristic optimization methods have been developed, such as Genetic Algorithm(GA), Evolutionary Programming(EP), Evolution Strategies(ES), and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). Especially, PSO algorithm is a newly proposed population based heuristic optimization algorithm which was inspired by the social behaviors of animals. However, population based heuristic optimization methods require higher computing time to find optimal point. This shortcoming is overcome by a straightforward parallel processing of PSO algorithm. The developed parallel PSO algorithm is implemented on a PC cluster system with 6 Intel Pentium IV 2GHz processors. The proposed approach has been tested on the IEEE 30-bus system. The results showed that computing time of parallelized PSO algorithm can be reduced by parallel processing without losing the quality of solution.

In designing System Protection Schemes (SPSs) in power systems, protecting transmission network against extreme undesired conditions becomes a significant challenge in mitigating the transmission line overloading. This paper presents an intelligent Special Protection and Control Scheme (SPCS) using of Differential Evolution with Adaptive Mutation (DEAM) approach to obtain the optimum generation rescheduling to solve the transmission line overloading problem in system contingency conditions. DEAM algorithm employs the attraction-repulsion idea that is applied in the electromagnetism-like algorithm to support the mutation process of the conventional Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. Different N-1 contingency conditions under base and increase load demand are considered in this paper. Simulation results have been compared with those acquired from Genetic Algorithm (GA) application. Minimum severity index has been considered as the objective function. The final results show that the presented DEAM method offers better performance than GA in terms of faster convergence and less generation fuel cost. IEEE 30-bus test system has been used to prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Traditional infrastructure has been superseded by cloud computing, due to its cost-effective and ubiquitous computing model. Cloud computing not only brings multitude of opportunities, but it also bears some challenges. One of the key challenges it faces is recovery of computing nodes, when an Information Technology (IT) failure occurs. Since cloud computing mainly depends upon its nodes, physical servers, that makes it very crucial to recover a failed node in time and seamlessly, so that the customer gets an expected level of service. Work has already been done in this regard, but it has still proved to be trivial. In this study, we present a Cost-Time aware Genetic scheduling algorithm, referred to as CTaG, not only to globally optimize the performance of the cloud system, but also perform recovery of failed nodes efficiently. While modeling our work, we have particularly taken into account the factors of network bandwidth and customer's monetary cost. We have implemented our algorithm and justify it through extensive simulations and comparison with similar existing studies. The results show performance gain of our work over the others, in some particular scenarios.
The major function of immune system is to protect infections. The immune systems are composed of innate and adaptive immunity. In adaptive immunity, the cellular and humoral components interact each other. Neonates and infants are infected frequently, because immune systems are naive and easy to expose to infectious agents. The complete history and physical examination is essential to evaluate the child with recurrent infections. The environmental risk factors of recurrent infections are day care center, cigarette smoke, and air pollution. The underlying diseases such as immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, allergy, and disorders of anatomy or physiology increase the susceptibility to infections. In immunodeficiency, infections are characterized by severe, chronic, recurrent, and unusual microbial agents infection. The defects of antibody production are susceptible to sinopulmonary bacterial infections. T cells defects are vulerable to numerous organisms such as virus, fungi, bacteria and etc. The screening tests for immune functions are the quantitative and qualitative measurements of each immune components. A complete blood count with white blood cell, differential, and platelet provide quantitative informations of immune components. Total complement and immunoglobulin levels represent the humoral component. Antibody levels of previously injected vaccines also provide informations of the antigen specific antibody immune responses. T cell and subsets count is quantitative measurement of cell mediated immunity. Delayed hypersensitivity skin test is a crude measurement of T cell function. The long term outcome of children with recurrent infections is completely dependent on the underlying diseases, the initial time of diagnosis and therapy, continued management, and genetic counscelling.

Optimal sensor placement techniques play a significant role in enhancing the quality of modal data during the vibration based health monitoring of civil structures, where many degrees of freedom are available despite a limited number of sensors. The literature has shown a shift in the trends for solving such problems, from expansion or elimination approach to the employment of heuristic algorithms. Although these heuristic algorithms are capable of providing a global optimal solution, their greatest drawback is the requirement of high computational effort. Because a highly efficient optimisation method is crucial for better accuracy and wider use, this paper presents an improved simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to solve the sensor placement problem. The algorithm is developed based on the sensor locations' coordinate system to allow for the searching in additional dimensions and to increase SA's random search performance while minimising the computation efforts. The proposed method is tested on a numerical slab model that consists of two hundred sensor location candidates using three types of objective functions; the determinant of the Fisher information matrix (FIM), modal assurance criterion (MAC), and mean square error (MSE) of mode shapes. Detailed study on the effects of the sensor numbers and cooling factors on the performance of the algorithm are also investigated. The results indicate that the proposed method outperforms conventional SA and Genetic Algorithm (GA) in the search for optimal sensor placement.
Air Quality Index (AQI) is a pointer to broadcast short term air quality. This paper presents one day ahead AQI forecasting on seasonal basis for three major cities in Maharashtra State, India by using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Programming (GP). The meteorological observations & previous AQI from 2005-2008 are used to predict next day's AQI. It was observed that GP captures the phenomenon better than ANN and could also follow the peak values better than ANN. The overall performance of GP seems better as compared to ANN. Stochastic nature of the input parameters and the possibility of auto-correlation might have introduced time lag and subsequent errors in predictions. Spectral Analysis (SA) was used for characterization of the error introduced. Correlational dependency (serial dependency) was calculated for all 24 models prepared on seasonal basis. Particular lags (k) in all the models were removed by differencing the series, that is converting each i'th element of the series into its difference from the (i-k)"th element. New time series is generated for all seasonal models in synchronization with the original time line & evaluated using ANN and GP. The statistical analysis and comparison of GP and ANN models has been done. We have proposed a promising approach of use of GP coupled with SA for real time prediction of seasonal multicity AQI.
