High-strength concrete (HSC) is becoming increasingly attractive for various construction projects since it offers a multitude of benefits over normal-strength concrete (NSC). Unfortunately, current design provisions for shear capacity of RC slender beams are generally based on data developed for NSC members having a compressive strength of up to 50 MPa, with limited recommendations on the use of HSC. The failure of HSC beams is noticeably different than that of NSC beams since the transition zone between the cement paste and aggregates is much denser in HSC. Thus, unlike NSC beams in which micro-cracks propagate around aggregates, providing significant aggregate interlock, micro-cracks in HSC are trans-granular, resulting in relatively smoother fracture surfaces, thereby inhibiting aggregate interlock as a shear transfer mechanism and reducing the influence of compressive strength on the ultimate shear strength of HSC beams. In this study, a new approach based on genetic algorithms (GAs) was used to predict the shear capacity of both NSC and HSC slender beams without shear reinforcement. Shear capacity predictions of the GA model were compared to calculations of four other commonly used methods: the ACI method, CSA method, Eurocode-2, and Zsutty's equation. A parametric study was conducted to evaluate the ability of the GA model to capture the effect of basic shear design parameters on the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under shear loading. The parameters investigated include compressivestrength, amount of longitudinal reinforcement, and beam's depth. It was found that the GA model provided more accurate evaluation of shear capacity compared to that of the other common methods and better captured the influence of the significant shear design parameters. Therefore, the GA model offers an attractive user-friendly alternative to conventional shear design methods.
We propose a new category of hybrid multi-layer neural networks with hetero nodes such as Fuzzy Set based Polynomial Neurons (FSPNs) and Polynomial Neurons (PNs). These networks are based on a genetically optimized multi-layer perceptron. We develop a comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization and genetic algorithms, in particular. The augmented genetically optimized HFPNN (namely gHFPNN) results in a structurally optimized structure and comes with a higher level of flexibility in comparison to the one we encounter in the conventional HFPNN. The GA-based design procedure being applied at each layer of HFPNN leads to the selection of preferred nodes (FPNs or PNs) available within the HFPNN. In the sequel, two general optimization mechanisms are explored. First, the structural optimization is realized via GAs whereas the ensuing detailed parametric optimization is carried out in the setting of a standard least square method-based learning. The performance of the gHFPNNs quantified through experimentation where we use a number of modeling benchmarks-synthetic and experimental data already experimented with in fuzzy or neurofuzzy modeling.
Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are stochastic algorithms whose search methods model some natural phenomena. The procedure of GAs may be divided into two sub-procedures : Operation and Selection. Chromosomes can produce new offspring by means of operation, and the fitter chromosomes can produce more offspring than the less fit ones by means of selection. However, operation which is executed randomly and has some limits to its execution can not guarantee to produce fitter chromosomes. Thus, we propose a method which gives a directional information to the genetic operator by reinforcement learning. It can be achived by using neural networks to apply reinforcement learning to the genetic operator. We use the amount of fitness change which can be considered as reinforcement signal to calcualte the error terms for the output units. Then the weights are updated using backpropagtion algorithm. The performance improvement of GAs using reinforcement learning can be measured by applying the pr posed method to GA-hard problem.
In this paper, optimum methods of wind-induced vibration control of high-rise buildings are mainly studied. Two optimum methods, genetic algorithms (GA) method and Rayleigh damping method, are firstly employed and proposed to perform optimum study on wind-induced vibration control, six target functions are presented in GA method based on spectrum analysis. Structural optimum analysis programs are developed based on Matlab software to calculate wind-induced structural responses. A high-rise steel building with 20-storey is adopted and 22 kinds of control plans are employed to perform comparison analysis to validate the feasibility and validity of the optimum methods considered. The results show that the distributions of damping coefficients along structural height for mass proportional damping (MPD) systems and stiffness proportional damping (SPD) systems are entirely opposite. Damping systems of MPD and GAMPD (genetic algorithms and mass proportional damping) have the best performance of reducing structural wind-induced vibration response and are superior to other damping systems. Standard deviations of structural responses are influenced greatly by different target functions and the influence is increasing slightly when higher modes are considered, as shown fully in section 5. Therefore, the influence of higher modes should be considered when strict requirement of wind-induced vibration comfort is needed for some special structures.
Due to the fact that the ratio of their height to their openings is very large compared to normal beams, there are difficulties in the design and analysis of deep beams, which differ in behavior. In this study, the optimum horizontal and vertical reinforcement diameters of 5 different beams were determined by using genetic algorithms (GA) due to the openness/height ratio (L/h), loading condition and the presence of spaces in the body. In this study, the effect of different mutation operators and improved double times sensitive mutation (DTM) operator on GA's performance was investigated. In the study following random mutation (RM), boundary mutation (BM), non-uniform random mutation (NRM), Makinen, Periaux and Toivanen (MPT) mutation, power mutation (PM), polynomial mutation (PNM), and developed DTM mutation operators were applied to five deep beam problems were used to determine the minimum reinforcement diameter. The fitness values obtained using developed DTM mutation operator was higher than obtained from existing mutation operators. Moreover; obtained reinforcement weight of the deep beams using the developed DTM mutation operator lower than obtained from the existing mutation operators. As a result of the analyzes, the highest fitness value was obtained from the applied double times sensitive mutation (DTM) operator. In addition, it was found that this study, which was carried out using GAs, contributed to the solution of the problems experienced in the design of deep beams.

As computer technology continues to develop, computer networks are now widely used. As a result, there are many new intrusion types appearing and information security is becoming increasingly important. Although there are many kinds of intrusion detection systems deployed to protect our modern networks, we are constantly hearing reports of hackers causing major disruptions. Since existing technologies all have some disadvantages, we utilize algorithms, such as the fuzzy C-means (FCM) and the support vector machine (SVM) algorithms to improve these technologies. Using these two algorithms alone has some disadvantages leading to a low classification accuracy rate. In the case of FCM, self-adaptability is weak, and the algorithm is sensitive to the initial value, vulnerable to the impact of noise and isolated points, and can easily converge to local extrema among other defects. These weaknesses may yield an unsatisfactory detection result with a low detection rate. We use a genetic algorithm (GA) to help resolve these problems. Our experimental results show that the combined GA and FCM algorithm's accuracy rate is approximately 30% higher than that of the standard FCM thereby demonstrating that our approach is substantially more effective.
In the paper, Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) that determines its optimal coefficients using Genetic Algorithms is considered. It is also applied to the inverted pendulum problem known popularly as a standard plant. Flexibility of the inverted pendulum has been taken into account. In the results, Fuzzy Logic Controller under consideration successfully controls both rigid mode and flexible mode. The rule base of Fuzzy Logic Controller is automatically tuned using not only trial-error method but also Genetic Algorithms.
SA, TS, GA and ACS are four of the main algorithms for solving challenging problems of intelligent systems. In this paper we consider Examination Timetabling Problem that is a common problem for all universities and institutions of higher education. There are many methods to solve this problem, In this paper we use Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search, Genetic Algorithm and Ant Colony System in their basic frameworks for solving this problem and compare results of them with each other.
We present a hybrid self-tuning method of fuzzy inference systems with hyper elliptic Gaussian membership functions using genetic algorithm(GA) and back-propagation algorithm. The proposed self-tuning method has two phases : one is the coarse tuning process based on GA and the other is the fine tuning process based on back-propagation. But the parameters which is obtained by a GA are near optimal solutions. In order to solve the problem in GA applications, it uses a back-propagation algorithm, which is one of learning algorithms in neural networks, to finely tune the parameters obtained by a GA. We provide Box-Jenkins time series to evaluate the advantage and effectiveness of the proposed approach and compare with the conventional method.

In this paper, we introduce the architecture of Genetic Algorithm(GA) based Feed-forward Polynomial Neural Networks(PNNs) and discuss a comprehensive design methodology. A conventional PNN consists of Polynomial Neurons, or nodes, located in several layers through a network growth process. In order to generate structurally optimized PNNs, a GA-based design procedure for each layer of the PNN leads to the selection of preferred nodes(PNs) with optimal parameters available within the PNN. To evaluate the performance of the GA-based PNN, experiments are done on a model by applying Medical Imaging System(MIS) data to a multi-variable software process. A comparative analysis shows that the proposed GA-based PNN is modeled with higher accuracy and more superb predictive capability than previously presented intelligent models.
