  • Cogeneration is the simultaneous generation of heat and electricity in a single unit, and is a highly energy-efficient technology compared to the independent generation of both products. Therefore, cogeneration has been widely introduced in many countries for use in industrial, commercial and residential applications. However, there have been few models with an output of less than 100 kilowatt. In the present study, a spark ignited gas engine with electric generation output of 10 kilowatts was developed for micro cogeneration package. The gas engine shows 26.7% of electric generation efficiency, NOx emission less than 10 ppm at 13% oxygen, 82 dB of Noise level, and about 3 seconds of switching time from idling to nominal power.

  • Modern aircraft is facing the increase of power demands and thermal challenges. In accordance with the application of more electric technology and advanced mission requirement, aircraft system requires increase of power generation and it cause increase of internal heat generation. Simultaneously, restrictions have significantly been imposed to the thermal management system. Modern aircraft must maintain low radar observability and infra-red signature. In addition, new composite aircraft skins have reduced the amount of heat that can be rejected to the environment. The combination of these characteristics has increased the challenges faced by thermal management. In order to mitigate the thermal challenges, the concept of system level thermal management should be applied and new modeling and simulation tools need to be developed. To develop and utilize system level thermal management technology, three key points are considered. Firstly, the performance changes of subsystems and components must be assessed at an integrated thermal system. It is because that each subsystem and component interacts with other subsystems or components and it can directly effects on overall system performance. Secondly, system level thermal management requirements and solutions must be evaluated early in conceptual design process as vehicle and propulsion system configuration decisions are being made. Finally, new component level thermal management technologies must focus on reducing heat generation and increasing the availability of heat sinks.

  • This paper describes the implementation of a layout generation system for the gate matrix style to implement multi-level logic. To achieve improved layouts from general net lists, the proposed system performs flexible net binding for series nets. Also the system reassings gates by the heuristic information that shorter net lengths are better for the track minimization. By track minimizing with subdividing layout column information, the system decreases the number of necessary layout tracks. Experimental results show that the system generates more area-reduced (approximately 7.46%) layouts than those by previous gate matrix generation systems using net list inputs.

  • The author studied the process of unifying Hanja variant groups of Korea and China for LGR (Label Generation Rule) of Internet Top-Level Hangeul Hanja Domain and possible confusion between Hangeul syllable and Hanja character. Among 3518 Chinese variant groups, Korea and China need not review variant groups which include no or just one Korean Hanja character. Korea and China reviewed 304 Chinese variant groups (9% of the 3518 Chinese variant groups) which include two or more Korean Hanja characters. By doing so, Korea and China succeeded in efficiently unifying variant groups. Unification process of variant groups which is the main core of Korea-China coordination and almost final unification result is summarized in this paper. In addition, the author analyzed systematically whether some Hanja character could be confused with a Hangeul syllable and obtained a good result which was not expected at the beginning. Probably this kind of systematic analysis has not been performed in the past and seems the first attempt, which is one of the contributions of this paper. The author also reviewed how to express K-LGR in XML for submission to ICANN.

  • This paper addresses the output control of a utility-connected double-fed induction machine (DFIM) for wind power generation systems (WPGS). DFIM has a back-to-back converter to control outputs of DFIM driven by the wind turbine for WPGS. To supply commercially the power of WPGS to the grid without any problems related to power quality, the real and reactive powers (PQ) at the stator side of DFIM are strictly controlled at the required level, which in this paper is realized with the Fuzzy PI controller based on the field orientation control. For the Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) converter connected to the rotor side of DFIG to maintain the controllability of PQ at the state side of DFIM, the DC voltage of the DC link capacitor is also controlled at a certain level with the conventional Proportion-Integral (PI) controller of the real power. In addition, the power quality at the grid connected to the rotor side of DFIM through the back-to-back converter is maintained in a certain level with a PI controller of the reactive power. The controllers for the PQ at the stator side of DFIM, the DC link voltage of the back-to-back inverter and the reactive power at the grid connected to the rotor side of DFIM are designed and simulated in the PSIM program, of which the result verifies the performance of the proposed controllers.

  • In this study, we investigated and compared the types of analogy generation processes and the perceptions of analogy generation on saturated solution of fifth grade scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. After the instruction of self-generating analogies on 'saturated solution' concept for two classes, 12 scientifically-gifted and 8 general elementary students were interviewed to explore their analogy generation processes and the perceptions of the abilities required in the processes, the conditions of good analogies, and the advantages/disadvantages of analogy generation. The results revealed that their analogy generation processes were classified into three types. The scientifically-gifted students generated the analogies in more systematic and efficient ways and had better understanding of the important parts in the processes than the general elementary students. They also suggested more concrete and various ideas about the conditions of good analogies. Many scientifically-gifted and general elementary students thought that analogy generation would have positive influences on the developments of the cognitive aspects such as various higher-level thinking abilities and understanding of science concepts as well as the affective aspects such as science learning motivation and interest. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • This paper presents a useful multilevel PWM inverter scheme based on a (3$^{n-1}$+2) level generation technique. It consists of a PWM inverter, an assembly of LEVEL inverters, and cascaded transformers. To produce high quality output voltage waves, it synthesizes a large number of output voltage levels using cascaded transformers, which have a series-connected secondary. By a suitable selection of secondary turn-ration of the transformer, the amplitude of an output voltage is appeared at the rate of an integer to an input dc source. Operational principles and analysis are illustrated in depth. The validity of the proposed system is verified through computer-aided simulations and experimental results using prototypes generation output voltages of an 11-level and a 29-level, respectively. And their results are compared with conventional counterparts.

  • A numerical simulation has been performed on the generation of the coastal cliff which lies as the distinct boundary between the beach and the hinterland. As a result of storm surge, it is known that the steeper the initial beach slope, the larger the generation of the coastal cliff. The rise of water level added the mean water level accelerates the generation of the coastal cliff. In addition, the longshore distribution of the incident wave height is one factor that bring about the generation of the non-uniform coastal cliff in longshore direction. Therefore this study will be able to use for expecting the formation and erosion of coastal cliff in sand beach.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) have recently discussed the technical problems related to the second-generation intact stability criteria of ships. The second-generation intact stability criteria refer to five modes of vulnerability when the ship sailing in the ocean. In this study, we described a method to verify the criteria of the surf-riding/broaching. In case that Lv1 (Level 1) vulnerability criteria is not satisfied based on the relatively simple calculation using the Froude number (Fn), we presented the calculation procedure for the Lv2 (Level 2) criteria considering the hydrodynamics in waves. The results were reviewed based on the data for given previous ships. In absence of ship-specific data, a similar Lv2 result was confirmed by comparing the result obtained by calculating the added mass with the case where the added mass was 10% of the ship mass. This result will contribute to basic ship design process according to the IMO draft regulation.
